4 out of 5 eggsPowerful machine, not so portable

Pros: - Powerful gaming machine, good enough to stand in for a desktop
- Nice big screen
- Bloatware not terrible
- Great value

Cons: - Very heavy, not very portable.
- Bloatware
- Trouble associated with refurbishing (missing pieces)
- Very little documentation for setup

Other Thoughts: It's obviously way more portable than a desktop but not as portable as smaller latops. It's very heavy, especially if you're bringing the charger and other accessories around. And you'll need a big carrying case too. You shouldn't get this if you're going to be bringing your computer to and from work every day, but its nice if you need a computer that has the capability to be moved around. For me, I was moving across the country and wanted a replacement for my desktop that was still powerful but could be moved.

I saw this exact model in Best Buy while looking for a laptop case and it ran about $1,250 there so you're getting a good discount here.

-1 star because my laptop came with some screws missing. The HDD screws were missing so the HDD was loose when I bought it, and obviously the laptop didn't boot because the HDD wasn't connected. It stays connected on its own fairly well but I'm using duct tape to keep it attached just in case. Also there's very little documentation for setting your computer up so you're on your own there.

4 out of 5 eggsFirst RMA

Pros: The laptop itself runs great and is a steal at this price ($925) if you get one that doesn't have any issues. I expected poor customer support from ASUS but was somewhat impressed.

Cons: Received the laptop with battery/power issues and am awaiting the return parts from an RMA to ASUS.

Other Thoughts: Not sure if I should have done the RMA through Newegg instead of directly through ASUS?

5 out of 5 eggsEverything I Expected!

Pros: Fast computer for the money spent I've run a few games on it such as skyrim, tf2, and fallout among others and it handles them really well. cool design, really quiet while staying nice and cool through hours of constant stress. Keyboard is very spacious and wrist wrest is soft and comfortable. Sound is very nice with the sub on the bottom. No visible case damage or anything! I am very happy with this purchase so far. I mainly bought it as a second workstation away from home and in that aspect it is great!

Cons: very minimal issues in terms of hardware. On first boot-up it said i did not have a genuine version of Windows but i just typed in the key on the bottom tag and works great! But keep in mind this is a refurbish so things like that happen. Usually easy to fix. A lot of drivers needed installed on first start but that's really not an issue just go to Asus site and download them. The track pad is a little wonky to handle. I have also ran into a chameleon engine error on every bootup but it just puts a small popup on screen. I looked it up and its some non critical asus app that doesn't effect the computer.

Other Thoughts: Just know this is a referbished product so it may come with some issues just be prepared to handle them and hope for minimal easy to fix errors.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst Computer I Ever Bought

Pros: Very nice gaming laptop for the price, 8 gigs of ram, decent processor speed, and a large HDD

Cons: VERY VERY BAD CUSTOMER SUPPORT! Iv'e had to send my laptop in for service three times because of a constant freezing issue due to the VGA_BD Drive. Not only that but when i received my computer back the trim on the computer screen was falling off and the DVD drive trim was coming off. Receiving the computer back for the second time the only issue they fixed was my VGA_BD drive again and never even so much as touched the trim problems and the screen. Its next to impossible to receive a new computer from ASUS let alone a refund. If the customer support wasn't so bad I would have rated this computer much higher and I wish I could. I'm a digital forensics major in school and love computers and trying to fix them when problems occur, but when the company won't work with you its very frustrating. The only replies i get from them is "Im sorry", and "Send it back for service".

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It is unfortunate that your computer is not working the way it should. In most cases, after one RMA, the computer should be fixed. I am sorry that after your third RMA, you are still having the same issues with the computer. If I may, I would like to take a look at your case. Please send me an email including your RMA number along with the laptop's serial number, and I will do my best to help where I can. My email is cl-mark@asus.com.

Mark

4 out of 5 eggsMeh

Pros: I7 3rd gen rocks in this laptop

Beautiful to look at

Put in a Kingston hyper x SSD and the load time is rediculously fast for a laptop imo.

Cons: Graphics are lacking to what i expected. This model should come with a 670m but i cant complain for the cost.

Other Thoughts: 1 egg off for graphics but overall its a pretty nice machine.

4 out of 5 eggsDVD drive not functional

Pros: Good GPU able to run games above 60 FPS. BF3 runs on 55 FPS. Capture software runs smooth and records 1080. Strong CPU fast and reliable so far. Good word processing laptop. Nice layout even though the screen is pretty large.

Cons: DVD DRIVE IS NOT WORKING. HAVE TRIED OVER 10 DVDS AND CDS AND NONE HAVE WORKED! When I click the DVD after I have inserted a disc it says please insert a disc. If anyone could help before I send it back thanks.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It's a great laptop at a great price. Sketchy shipping packaging but all came intact

Cons: Issued an RMA because -
Backlit keyboard did not work (i know its cosmetic, but its a cool feature I paid for)
Instead of a 1tb hard drive, they put in two separate drives - 400G and 500G drive. I was promised a 1tb drive.
I was going to put a SSD in the other spot.

Other Thoughts: This laptop is huge, its more like a mobile desktop. When you travel a lot on the road for work and you still want to game, a laptop like this is a must.

3 out of 5 eggsNeeds to work on QA/QC

Pros: The laptop looks solid enough, and arrived on time.

Cons: The unit was sent with a clearly damaged component (Battery).

Other Thoughts: I understand that this unit is a referb, but ASUS should really be double checking the components they put with their units. The battery for this laptop is clearly damaged, and won't even fit into the battery compartment.

I'm a little disappointed as ASUS has always sent me high quality equipment, and this is the first real issue I've had with them. I can only assume this was an "off" day for someone.

I'm starting an RMA for the battery, but this shouldn't be necessary for a system fresh from warehouse, in my opinion.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for sharing your review. We value all of our customers' feedback and this is no exception. I am sorry that your laptop had a defective battery. I hope that everything goes smoothly regarding the RMA process.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Price and performance. After adding a Samsung 840 SSD this laptop just about blows through everything I can throw at it. Unlike many others I have seen, I have no issues with this machine being a refurb - everything worked fine and the packaging the machine came in was good.

Cons: 5400 RPM 1TB - this isn't really a con though. Do yourself a favor and pickup an SSD for this machine if you intend to do any gaming with it.

Other Thoughts: After reading the other reviews I was a bit hesitant due to it being a refurb and the issues that others had, but I am very happy with what I received.

5 out of 5 eggsNewegg does it again!

Pros: I was reluctant to pull the trigger on this refurb at first, however in all the years I've shopped with newegg, they have never let me down. I'm glad I did because this laptop is superb. Sure like others have said it could have been packaged slightly better, but whatever. No dead pixels, blemishes, scratches, smudges, in fact as far as I could tell, the thing was brand spanking new. I'm very happy with my purchase. Thank you asus for a world class put together product and thank you newegg for bringing it to me unscathed.

Super quiet, best cooling system available, overclockable (which I have no need as of this point, stock is perfect), beautiful crisp display, 90degree power connector, forgiving touch pad, backlit keys, keyboard nicely spaced, separated numeric pad and plenty of inputs.

Cons: no input for my R2 astromech

Other Thoughts: Items bought during the initial purchase were:
SSD - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211597
16gigRam - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233370
Bag - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834995413

The carrying case is outstanding. The handle especially makes toting this otherwise heavy beast around less laborious. Very pleased with its form and function.
With the SSD installed (I took out that dinosaur 1TB 5200 drive immediately) and a fresh clean install of Win7 64, coupled with the total 24gig ram this machine meets and exceeds expectations.
Boot time is 11 seconds.
