5 out of 5 eggsSpeed, Looks, Functions, but VERY heavy!

Pros: Overall GREAT "computer" (please note the "computer"). Very nice configuration, very nice design, nice details, and ASUS amazingly put together a great computer (I did have several complaints about ASUS in the past with other computers I had, but this one looks much better so far)...
But I must give this to ASUS for this one, they did their homework, and the system is very well designed, put together with nice specs...
It IS FAST, Looks good, Works good. Works like a champ!

Cons: HOWEVER, this is NOT a really good "LAPTOP". The ONLY reason for that is; IT IS VERY AND VERY "HEAVY"...
I can't imagine dropping this laptop, it would definitely break, and break hard... Even if it falls on someone's feet and doesn't break, it would definitely break that person's feet.
I am a guy on the larger size, so, the weight does not bother me that much, but still when (even) I am carrying it, it needs some extra effort.
But other than WEIGHT, there are no more CONs (as of now)...

Other Thoughts: It is a great system for the price. Every detail is nicely designed, and works very nice so far. IMHO, Windows 8 is NOT as nice as 7, and I am on the edge of downgrading to Windows 7, but I guess this might be one of those things we might need to get used to... I am planning to give it a chance for couple of weeks more, but if I still feel weird about the HORRIBLE opening page (whatever it is called), I may start looking ways to safely change the OS to Windows 7 (if it is even possible).

Pros: speed, power and looks!!

Cons: I hear a humming nise every now and then maybe a fan? may have to call support about it. and then my games minimize themselves and I cant figue out why!!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you are having issues with the game minimizing. Here is a link below where you can update the latest bios and drivers to see if that will resolve your issue.

http://usa.asus.com/Notebooks/Gaming_Powerhouse/G55VW/#download

You can also try the Nvidia site to see it that have more upto date drivers.

If you have any questions or comments you can email me again at cl-jeffrey@asus.com which I reside in the U.S

4 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop.

Pros: FAST! Great performance on games as well as other things. The mechanical HDD is quick. Excellent screen, soft to the eyes. Awesome keyboard lay out. Excellent cooling design (doesn't get hot on me yet, I've had it 5 weeks in a DUSTY area). Back lit keyboard is on par with other laptops (single color). The webcam is pretty good. For a laptop, the sound is better than expected. It says it has a built-in subwoofer ... well I can't comment on that but it sounds better than average. It really can resume from sleep in less than 2 seconds (lid open and click for me). Thunderbolt.. A real graphics card, pure USB 3.0 (some wireless things might argue with you like Mice or Headsets...)

Cons: OK so I have a problem with these things, which together lose an egg. 1 HDD bay and 2 memory slots are all you have access to. If you want to get to the mSATA slot and the other 2 memory slots, you have to take apart the laptop almost completely (VOIDS YOUR 1-yr Accident warranty!!). Another thing is the touch pad doesn't work well with windows 8. Admittedly, I saw this problem with windows 8 on a few other competitors models as well which may mean it's the OS and not the parts; but I've seen it work well on other competitors too.

Other Thoughts: HUGE power brick. Honestly, the sound, for a laptop is better than average. The feel of the keyboard (which I normally hate on most laptops) is very well. The touch pad really is horrible in Windows 8 for me, but in Linux it's just fine. As far as gaming, this thing does as good or better in Borderlands 2, Skyrim, and Guild Wars 2 than my Q9550 quad core+ 560TI desktop machine. The most important part - the cooling to make all this work - incredible for a laptop.. but beware, you pay for it in weight!

Also, note that this doesn't have optimus technology; The 3630QM does have HD Graphics 4000 but the laptop doesn't use it for your non-gaming to save power like some competitors do. I Don't put that as a con though, because I don't know what the difference in power would be for your situation. It doesn't even show in hardware scans.

All in all I like this model, and I expect it'll live a full life of use for me, and I'll abuse it some too I'm sure. It's very well put together and I would expect that when I upgrade in a year or two, it'll be just broken in well. Some competitors offer things at the same price point but with more specs or "features" but if you compare quality I would say go for this one. Better to have something nice and long lasting than nice and have to replace/repair it soon.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome machine

Pros: very fast, I replaced the 500gb HDD with an SSD and READ THIS!: I saw that on this site it advertises that it's max is 16gb of RAM, I placed in two more 8gb sticks of ram and it registers 24gb of ram in both the BIOS and the OS (Ubuntu 12.10) not the first time I've found a laptop that can surpass it's "max" the chipset and processor are both capable of 32gb of RAM sooooo. . . you make the choice. With ubuntu 12.10 though this thing is pretty much "instant on" from complete shutdown no fancy tricks needed. Runs all the games I play wonderfully. This thing truly is a wonderful gaming PC for the price (although I got it elsewhere for a bit less)

Cons: A bit thicker than I like, and the thickness truly doesn't seem to pay off for cooling, the MSI whitebook I bought from a custom laptop company seemed to run cooler (and had a "high speed" button for the fans) MSI MS-16ga. This thing doesn't get very hot though and is quiet. Just a bit thick that's all.

Other Thoughts: was also kind of a pain to put ubuntu on but that's due to shortcomings with the open source nouveu video drivers not supporting 6 series cards yet. So if you're a linux user be aware you need to start the live USB with the "nomodeset" option and then install, and then you will need to set that again on first boot or simple install everything from the command line on first boot (which is how I did it) in this case the order that worked for me is

sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic
(I restarted here to be safe, you probably don't have to)
sudo apt-get install nvidia-experimental-310 nvidia-settings-experimental-310
sudo reboot

should launch lightdm and unity now.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: FAST, High Quality, High Performance, Has Everything I Need and Much More! Processor is snappy, plenty of RAM and HDD space, and the graphics are AMAZING for a laptop!
It is an Asus... where can you go wrong?

Cons: Has Windows 8, really not a con but I wanted a Windows 7 Model. All sold out :(

Other Thoughts: You can not beat such a top of the line laptop for such a fair price. Higher specs than an Alienware I looked at which was over $500.00 more!

2 out of 5 eggsGreat Computer, Awful Tech Support

Pros: Computer works amazing, looks great, and is fast. Easy to upgrade if you have the technical knowledge.

Cons: Customer service is terrible for this system. I received the system with a dead power brick that sizzled when I plugged it in. Not too bad, anyone that buys a computer knows that sometimes you get a bad egg. It happens, called their tech support and explained the situation. Apparently, none of the support gurus knew anything about Asus's complimentary warranty program and they tried to get me to pay for an RMA. No way, talked to a supervisor to get it straightened out and off we went. I asked if they wanted just the power brick as per the emailed instructions, they said yes initially. Then after we hung up I get an email asking for Everything to be sent back. "Everything" is a rather subjective term, so I called back asking if they wanted the books, discs, etc. They told me to send the whole package back. I did as requested and then after a week or so I received no updates and their RMA status link didn't work. So I called back asking for an update. To my surprise I was told that my system was repaired and on its way back, fantastic, when were they going to tell me about it? I had to fight to get a tracking number so I could track when it would arrive. Then of course a couple days later the computer shows up....however, I sent the original packaging, books, and discs, I received back a laptop and power brick. NOTHING ELSE. Angry I call their support back telling them that I expected to receive back what I sent, especially if I was asked to send it. They referred me to the email that they sent saying not to send anything but the laptop and power brick/battery. I referred them to the "everything" email. They refused to budge. So now I have a computer that I cannot recover if I have a full failure. Excellent. Then I took a look at the computer itself and received it back from service with a massive crack in the case. Even more perturbed I call back and demand a refund as this was the final straw. They convinced me that I should give them another chance to RMA it. Besides, they will not issue a refund, and they successfully eliminated my chances of getting a refund from Newegg as they took my discs and books without giving me a chance to pay to get it back (which they say they would do in their RMA instructions email). So I sent it back again. It is coming up on 2 weeks and I have heard nothing about my system....again. I am sure if I call they will let me know it is on the way back...but really? What company doesn't send an email to inform you your stuff is on the way back. Especially with RMAs?

Other Thoughts: If you have a warranty program, train your customer service on it. There is no excuse that your support personnel have no idea what I am talking about when it is a company program.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you are also having a problem such as another customer below you.

Please provide me with your RMA number and I will see what I can do for you to make your experience less of a headache.

2 out of 5 eggsAsus Tech Support is Terrible

Pros: Computer was well priced and fast when I got it. I mean FAST. The SSD loads Windows 8 with ASUS quickstart just as advertised. I did however have some issues with customer support.

Cons: Computer showed up with a bad power adapter. Made a sizzling noise when I plugged it in and would not charge the battery. I Immediately called Asus support after registering for the free warranty program. As I received the computer brand new and it had a hardware flaw I was certainly not paying to ship it back...not what the Asus tech support thought. After explaining to the tech support personnel THEIR OWN warranty program I finally asked for a supervisor and apparently he was the only employee tracking the shipping situation. RMA was done up and I received an email detailing the instructions for the RMA. During my call I asked if I should send only the adapter in since I knew that was the problem (I work with these things) I was told to send only the adapter. Right after I hang up I get an email from the service department requesting that I send EVERYTHING in with the adapter. Confused I call back asking if I should send it back in it's original box with all the disc, books, cables etc. I was told yes....fantastic. I did as I was told.

Low and behold I wait about a week after the thing is shipped via FEDEX and I hear nothing, the "check the status of your RMA" link doesn't work so don't bother. I call back asking what is going on with my laptop and am informed that it was shipped 2 days prior. Fantastic, when was Asus going to inform me that my property was on the way back in the mail? Apparently never, I had to ask specifically for the employee to find the tracking number and give it to me. I expected to receive what I sent back but low and behold I get only the laptop and power adapter back. I consider myself lucky that I got the battery back. No books, no recovery disc, nothing. They did not even ask if I wanted to pay the difference to have all that extra stuff shipped back, not even a peep. So now I cannot return the darn thing as NEWEGG will not take it back. I called and Asus support said I wasn't supposed to send all the other stuff in. When asked why I wasn't asked to pay to get it back, they had nothing. As a kicker I received the system back with a massive crack in the housing of the screen hinge. Amazing....I call them back and they had the audacity to ask me if I dropped it after I told them I opened the box and it was broken. Even if I had dropped it the warranty covers that as well, but that was not the point, the crack was due to their lack of being able to pack a computer properly. One layer of bubble rap doesn't cut it. I received a SECOND RMA for the system and it has been over a week again, no word from Asus on where my system actually is. This is amazing. Worst service I have ever had. Asus also told me I cannot get a refund from them even though they basically confiscated my books, discs, and original packaging. Overall, very displeased.

Other Thoughts: Asus tech support is full of poorly trained personnel that do not know their own companies policies. If you offer a warranty program that is complicated and new, train your people on it so customers do not get frustrated. At this point I just want my money back, but I cannot get it since Asus confiscated half of what I paid for and didn't even offer me a chance to get it back from their "service" center.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that someone told you to send everything in when you only had to send the adapter. Can you please provide me with the RMA number so I can check the status of your unit.

Deeply apologize for all the frustration this has caused you. I will try to make you experience less of a headache. Regarding about the refund, we do not provide refunds.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing!!!

Pros: This computer is amazing. Hard to get away from it and I haven't even started gaming on it. Windows 8 is really fun to explore and seem pretty simple to use so far. Im very happy that I waited and got this computer!

Cons: I haven't found any yet, but Im sure there is something that can be considered a con....maybe.
