4 out of 5 eggsGood with a few minor issues

Pros: Powerful machine, runs all of my Adobe programs quickly. Games run smoothly, too.

Cons: The hard drives were partitioned for some reason, and there was quite a bit of junkware loaded onto them.

Sometimes it doesn't shutdown or restart. And sometimes it won't recognize externals plugged into the USB ports. Unclear if it is a Windows 8 or hardware problem.

Other Thoughts: I have no issues with Windows 8. Once you get the hang of it there isn't much a problem navigating it.

4 out of 5 eggsWorth the green

Pros: Backlight on keyboard is not too bright to be blinding like some keyboards, it's just right in a dark room. Computer is fast, by fast, I mean it makes superman jealous. This laptop is quiet like a ninja assassin. Playing BF3 and you can't even tell or hear the fans running. Sound quality is great for a laptop, if you expect bone crushing bass, you don't know how speakers work. It produces great sound for the little speakers and subwoofer underneath. The "rubbery" finish is awesome, it doesn't smudge, dent, scratch at all. Much better than my last Asus that had a polished finish and was scratched the first week.

Cons: Heavy. Extra wide in the back, I am having trouble finding a decent backpack to tote this around Campus with. Keys are like the newer keys on laptops, Not great for games because they are flat and don't give you any "feel" for where your fingers are and I do find myself getting "lost" when the action is intense, but not that big a deal, its not a PC, if your that pressed about the keyboard, you can buy one and plug it in when your gaming just like you most likely do with a Mouse already.

Other Thoughts: I was not a fan of this having windows 8 and planned on downgrading. I decided to let myself use it for a week. I love windows 8. The first 2 days was a nightmare with no start button, after that it has been smooth sailing and it is super smooth, I am impressed that Microsoft was able to make 2 decent operating systems in a row.

If you buy this laptop, make sure you check Nvidia's site first before updating. I had an issue after updating drivers when I first got it, that it kept freezing the entire computer and I had to unplug it and take the battery out to turn it off. Turned out it was the 3.20 drivers (at the time of this post, the newest drivers) that was causing the random lockups. I installed 3.14 drivers and it has been flawless. The drivers installed from factory that come with the Laptop cause all kinds of graphics problems in a lot of popular games.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome Sauce

Pros: Silent as a ninja. Seriously, this thing doesn't even make a sound. Keyboard light is not over the top, and not glaring in a dark room. Outside of laptop is a matte black finish, sort of like rubber, which is nice because it basically cant scratch. Sound quality is great for onboard/tiny speakers. Plays all my games in high settings and still runs anything in the background with ease. Seriously, this thing is faster than my desktop, which is also a beast.

Cons: There is one issue I cannot figure out. It comes with old and way outdated Nvidia Drivers. In certain games, with the default drivers, you get ... don't really know what to call it other than graphic glitching, like on Diablo3, the entire screen doesn't blink, but you will get like a micro-second of some of the wrong graphics flashing in the wrong spot.

So I updated to the 3.20 drivers from NVidia, worked fine, played fine, everything was smooth. However, the computer started randomly freezing up. Mouse and everything. I had to remove the battery, just to restart it. Upon restart it would be fine for 5mins - 1 hour, then bam. I can't tell if its just the screen (aka video) or the entire system, but I cannot get the screen to turn off unless I remove the battery. I removed the drivers and reverted to default installed ones, and have not had a freeze in over a week. Today, I reinstalled the drivers, and the freezes happened again.

I am not saying it is a hardware issue or what, because scouring the internet hasn't shown much of a response to the newer NVidia drivers. Will update this if I figure out what the problem is.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor weight distribution

Pros: It would make a good paperweight

Cons: All the weight is behind the screen, very poor ergonomics. It has chiclet keyboard which makes it awful for gaming.

Other Thoughts: Owned for less than 2 days, poor customer support when trying to exchange for a better laptop.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Countzero,

I am sorry that your experience has not been ideal. Since posting this review, has everything worked out with the computer exchange? I hope you were able to get another laptop. Should you need further assistance, please let me know through email at cl-mark@asus.com.

5 out of 5 eggsBeast of a Laptop

Pros: i7, 16 gig RAM, 256 SSD, & 3gig NVIDIA 670 GTX-Just blazingly fast at every single thing you need/want to do.

Cons: As mentioned and easily googled, sound qaulity is absolute garbage for a laptop in this price range.

Other Thoughts: Other than the sounds-I just use headphones, this laptop is computer euphoria! I play WoW with every single setting on max and it still does 90-100 fps!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Faster, smaller and cooler than the G73 I upgraded from. I love the Instant On feature, it really is instant. The Always On usb port for charging devices is really handy. SSD drive is noticably fast. Better battery life than its predecessor I love this laptop, recommend it to anyone who wants a high performance machine.

Cons: Two minor gripes:
Hard drives petitioned into 4 drives, kinda of strange to me.
Windows 8, its ok once you get rid of that metro junk...

Other Thoughts: touch pad freaked out on me similarly to the way my G73 touchpad did (many of you know what i mean) , altho this time removing the drivers and reinstalling them clean worked

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Simply what any gig would wish for; Strictly for power users only please!

Asides from gaming, it's an ideal tool for e-learning course authoring and rendering. Thanks ASUS

Cons: None yet! Perquisite is your good knowledge of windows 8 navigation which is not a problem for me.

1 out of 5 eggsCrash in 23 days

Pros: Purchased this computer with the knowledge of powerful gamer. 3D & Bu-Ray movies the best ever. Not much to add to this part. I just want to add that before I purchased this Laptop I study for long time the components with the knowledge's of 5 to 8 years of experiences. So I'm very disappointment.

Cons: after 23 days of have been fun with it, it crash on me, blue screen appear. After installing McAfee antivirus & Office 365. Very disappointment with this powerful Laptop. I will never get another gamer Asus Laptop for gamers are you kidding me right.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you were experiencing BSOD when you installed those two programs. Looks like their may be some instabilitiy issues that you may have to go to the company website to see if they have any updates to make their software compatible with windows 8.

So after you uninstalled the programs did you still get the BSOD. Try doing a factory restore by going to the charm bar and go to settings, change pc settings, general, and start over.

If you are not experiencing anymore BSOD then the notebook is working fine, it's just some incompatibility issues with software and windows 8.

5 out of 5 eggsCrazy boot times and response

Pros: i7, 16 gig RAM, 256 SSD, & 3gig NVIDIA 670 GTX. Very responsive system. I'd give it a 92/100 score.

Cons: Power brick is massive. Nothing like you've seen before. Windows 8 is also tricky at first, but with some tweaks (add start button to desktop to simulate Windows 7) and getting used to the new GUI it's not bad. I know a lot of people are complaining about Windows 8 because its difficulty to navigate, but it's a very nice interface once you get used to it. I'm personally a power user so Windows 7 Pro would have been the best option for me, but I'm happy with this so far. I haven't found any compatibility issues with my programs yet so keeping my fingers crossed. Give yourself about 1-3 weeks of getting used to Windows 8 before bashing it. I think that is reasonable.

Other Thoughts: I did want to want before I gave a review on this due to the learning curve of Win8, but overall I'm very satisfied. I use this laptop for gaming (BF3, Team Fortress, AC3), VMWare (Player, Workstation, and ESXi), GNS3 (network simulator), and Adobe products. Due to the 16Gig of RAM and beefy graphics card I'm flying through all of my daily activities. This laptop is very big and heavy, please keep this in mind. If you want this to be a very portable laptop, I would say go with a MAC or ultra book. If you are a power user, this one is for you.

1 out of 5 eggsUnhappy Camper

Pros: The laptop arrived in a timely fashion. The laptop appeared to be everything it was supposed to be in terms of speed, quiet and user friendly.

Cons: Out of the box the AC Adapter was faulty (according to ASUS tech support) and would not charge the battery. I called ASUS and they wanted me to send them the adapter and WAIT for it to be REPAIRED. $2000 for a new laptop, to get refurbished parts in return. I argued that they should send me a new adapter now and I would return teh bad adapter when I recieved the RMA. Instead, I have to fill out a form, scan it and e-mail it to them. Once they recieve the e-mail it will take up to 2 days for them to process the item, I would also need to provide a credit card number IN CASE I don't return the adapter. Really? I just spent $2k on a laptop and they are worried about me stiffing them on a $30 adapter? I will be staring at a laptop that I can't use for at least another week. I'm not sure I will be recommending ASUS to anyone, anytime soon. The new product backing is horrible.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that the power adapter did not work right out of the box.

That is our standard procedure in order for us to ship you a product before you send it in for service.
