1 out of 5 eggsAsus extremely bad with tablets

Pros: None

Cons: Asus will reply here when issues are mentioned to save face, but that is all. This is my third followup.

Other Thoughts: Asus is listed as a bad risk under ripoff reports. After getting ignored most of the year I'm letting small claims take over. Here they can't use their attnys. New egg has done what they could but Asus is responsible.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat tablet when it used to function

Pros: -Fast tablet, loads up applications quickly
-Convenience of syncing all of my Google email/apps/etc.
-Clear, direct UI
-Screen size and resolution
-Easy to open the case for repair

Cons: -Micro USB port
-No longer charge
-Dead after a year and a half of ownership

Other Thoughts: I'll be the first to admit that I like ASUS products. The laptop that I'm using to write this review is an ASUS laptop, however, this isn't the first time that I have had to send in product for a repair, but it will most likely be the last. My Google Nexus 7 tablet was a FANTASTIC tablet for the full year I was able to use it. After about 13 months of owning it, I started to have difficulty charging it (same thing that has happened with my DROID RAZR MAXX, search anything related to Micro USB ports), which conveniently was just outside of the 1 year warranty. I read some posts online about how a possible solution to this common issue was to open the case and re-seat the battery connector. This did not work for me. Next, I bought a better Micro USB cable, having read that this worked for some customers with this issue. This also did not work for me. Thankfully, the Nexus 7 (2012) has a 4-pin connector, which, after spending $50 on a Nexus dock, I was finally able to recharge my tablet and use it again. This worked for about 2 months, then that method no longer charged my tablet. After searching the internet again, I concluded that it was possibly a faulty battery, and spent around $20 on a new battery and installed it. This also did not work. I contacted ASUS support via email and they, to their credit, replied quickly to my problem. However, their response was that the tablet contained delicate equipment, that I needed to avoid being rough with it, and that it seemed like the tablet needed to be sent in for repair. After spending over $300 in this tablet, accessories, and repair parts, I have finally bowed my head in defeat and will consider spending even more money on a repair.

3 out of 5 eggsUsed to be great

Pros: Nice Display
Larger than my phone
Portable
Plenty of storage space
Android

Cons: Laggy
Worse since lollipop
Locks up constantly
Lock screen makes it hard to turn off alarm

Other Thoughts: I don't know what happened to this, it was great for the first several months and then it became very slow and unresponsive. I hoped that the update to lollipop would help, but it seems to be worse. Today it was TOTALLY unresponsive in the morning, I couldn't wake it - was receiving messages that like "System Process Unresponsive" and sometimes iI get "User UI not responding" etc. Had to plug it in to get it to unlock. One issue related to lollipop is that the power button now only functions as a power button, whereas before you could use it to set "sleep mode" or "silent" - or to silence the alarm. You can use the volume buttons to turn off the alarm but sometimes this just doesn't work so the only thing to do to not wake your partner is to quickly take it out of the room (one way to wake up) or hide it under your pillow. However, that's one minor issue - can always use a clock! What's worse it it used to be great to stream HBO or Netflix - now it's so undependable I can't even do that. I"m debating whether to try to get warranty service. I purchased the extended warranty as well.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Happy

Pros: Nice size, clear crisp screen and ease of use.

Cons: I'm now on my 3rd replacement. The first 2 bricked out and now the third one has lost the battery charging indicator.
I did some research on youtube and have found many people have the same problem,

Other Thoughts: I watched a number of Youtube videos and was able to open mine and reset the battery connector. Due to the lack luster design the battery and connector periodically slides out of place disconnecting the battery. I used some electrical tape to hold both in place. (This kills the warranty but I got tired of returning it only to get another lemon).
It's working now but no indication of battery level any more which is annoying. I understand this is a very very common problem with the Nexus. It's disappointing that Asus has done absolutely nothing to solve the problem. I guess it's like buying a car they are your friend until you pay the money then they don't know you any more.

1 out of 5 eggsUpdate-Dangerous Must Read

Pros: For the price and memory, 3 out of 4 units run great. Tablets fast, and can connect extremely well in low wifi hotspots where cell phones normally drop signal. My total opinion, Asus should stick with making Motherboards, not tablets.

Cons: Out of the 4 units I bought, one died within 3 days and Asus has been giving the run around in getting it repaired or replaced. As I mentioned earlier, the cables it comes with are horribly weak and all 4 cables have broken within in under 30 days from date of purchase. The metal is soft in both micro usb cable and 115vac adapter. Within under 10 days the micro usb connectors would not stay firmly connected to tablet and in 20 days the micro usb connectors had detached from the cables and would stick in the tablets female connector. If you buy this product, I highly recommend buying heavy duty micro usb cables or if you own any android products use the cables in place with what they came with. within 45 days, almost had a fire when one of the chargers started smoking and had unplugged it to get a 115vac shock as I had a grounding strap on when handling the surge protector power strip and hadn't noticed that when I had unplugged the burning adapter, it left behind one of the metal prongs in the outlet which my arm brushed against while unplugging another charger.
The tablet itself seems pretty heavy duty, and the chargers and cables made extremely cheap. There is no excuse for the quality of the above and definitely would not pass UL approval rating.
The unit that died within 3 days, seems to be s thermal fuse which prevents the tablet from charging.
Only buy this product if your willing to shell out for a separate stronger adapter and usb cable. Due to the fact the ASUS company that makes this product happens to be nearby in California, am filing in small claims in redwood city to cover cost for one tablet and all 4 adapters and usb cables.
Do not leave either tablet or charging unit unattended when charging as they both run extremely hot and as I mentioned above, almost had a fire and now must pay landlord for damaged rug.

Other Thoughts: I have been a loyal customer of Asus for many years, and every family member has a full tower I7 PC P6x58D motherboard and customer service when one was bad and needing replacing was much much better than tablet support. Which is why Ill stick with their Mbs, but never a tablet again.

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely Horrible!!!!!!

Pros: Haven't had it my possession long enough to give any.

Cons: Doesn't charge, locks up. terrible customer service at Asus.

Other Thoughts: If I could give this thing negative 5 eggs I would. I ordered this device 3 months ago. I have legally "owned" it for a little more than 90 days. I have had it physically in my possession for about 13 days. To make a long story short, I RMAed this thing (now) 5 times for service only to have it in the same state when it returned (Not charging). Now the device locks up constantly and now will not even show anything on the screen. Asus will not process any type of return, only service, nor will they process any type of replacement device.. Both customer service representatives and I have formally requested a replacement device on the last 2 occasions. Only to have the same device returned as I have cross checked the serial numbers. The service centers will not communicate any fixes or communication of anytype even when requested to do so. The last 3 times, I requested to have the service center contact me upon reception of the device. The only communication of anytype was the FedEx notice of a package shipment coming from Asus. I have bought Asus products for years and have been very happy with their products. Luckily during that time I had never needed to deal with customer service. At this point, I would not recommend any Asus products anymore nor will I be purchasing them anymore.

1 out of 5 eggs16 Months Later Will not start

Pros: Love using this for reading. Nice crisp background is easy on the eyes.

Cons: Battery DIED! Tried all of the fixes and nothing, called google support and she insisted it just needed charged. Charged it for 48 hours on 2 different oulets just to be sure. Read about the common battery cables coming loose and did that. Still nothing. Charged tablet unplugged plugged back in held the power still nothing.
This tablet has not been heavily used at all. a week on vacation and occasional internet use. Turned off after every useage. Would not expect the battery to die after only a year with limited usage.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: It was cheap and after it sat on the charger for over a day it's finally staying on when taken off the charger

Cons: Scratch on the bezel of a supposedly new device. I just use them as alarm clocks and lighting controllers so as long as it works.

3 out of 5 eggsDied for no reason

Pros: Nice size, reasonable speed, good screen, indoor brightness is good

Cons: Died for no reason

Other Thoughts: We have two of these older Nexus 7 2012 models. Liked the first one so much (gave to my wife) that she bought me one 6 or so months later. The first one (purchased 12/12) was working just fine but in June of this year (2014) it would not turn on one morning. This is an 18 month life. Be prepared for this. I tried every clue suggested on the internet and every suggestion from their customer service rep. No restart. They said since it was so "old" that they could try to repair it outside of warranty and that it would be about $100 - $150 however they could not tell for sure until I sent it to them. In addition it contains a lot of data I do not want to send to some factory somewhere. Since I could replace with same 2012 model in that price range, I just abandoned the broken unit and bought a replacement of the same model. So, I give the first 2012 unit 1 star and the other one my wife bought for me later 5 stars (since it did not die yet) - thus the average of 3 stars. Just be aware of the flaw where it just won't start one day. Look at comments on Google about Nexus 7 units that die for no reason.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Valued Customer,

I am sorry to hear that your Nexus 7 would no longer power on, occasionally if the battery completely discharges it may require a certain procedure to get your Nexus 7 back on.

Charge the tablet with a wall outlet for one hour > Unplug your Nexus 7 > plug your Nexus 7 back in within 10 seconds > Hold the power button for 15 seconds.

If you need any assistance in the future, please feel free to email me at CL-Scott1@asus.com. Be sure to place case # N140818562 in the subject line for reference. I am here to assist with all of your ASUS needs.

Warm regards,

Scott
