Singularly Remarkable Beauty

Setting new standards in technology and fashion, Zenbook Prime measures just 0.12in. (3mm) in the front and 0.35in. (9mm) at the back. It uses precision-crafted aluminum throughout its monoshell build, ensuring light durability. The cover features finely-etched concentric circles that embody the infinite nature of Zen thinking, and the entire design has been optimized to offer a holistic approach towards combining beauty with speed, and balancing work with play. To maintain this look and feel, ASUS has developed a lineup of Zenbook Prime accessories that are just as attractive and sophisticated.

ASUS

Trend-Setting Speed and Power

ASUS engineering has been able to accomplish the feat of bestowing Zenbook Prime with uncompromising technical excellence despite its ultra-suave and compact form. An Intel® Core i5™ processor (Ivy Bridge platform) is at the heart, while SATA 6Gbps SSD storage outpaces normal hard drives by up to four times. Similarly, USB 3.0 ensures data moves up to ten times faster than USB 2.0, and Bluetooth 4.0 offers the latest version of the wireless connectivity standard. Dual band 2.4GHz / 5GHz Wi-Fi derived from top-end ASUS router technology ensures the fastest networking, and to keep all of this cool, a proprietary V-shaped air channel drives heat away before it can cause instability.

ASUS

Responding to Your Needs

Intelligent power management and extreme efficiency have resulted in Zenbook Prime offering two-second instant on resume, similar to your smartphone and creating an always-on ultrabook that doesn't make you wait. It can also stay in standby for up to two weeks with the security of automatic file backup to prevent data loss. The battery lasts 25% longer than those found on other notebooks, helped along by two distinct operating modes that can be switched instantly: performance mode in high-demand applications, and battery saving mode during daily computing tasks. For a genuinely personal and discrete user experience, Zenbook Prime offers facial recognition to minimize the risk of unauthorized usage.

ASUS

The Art of Entertainment

Zenbook Prime fields a vivid full HD 1080p IPS panel that brings visuals to breathtaking life with 350cd/m² brightness and 800:1 contrast. Its anti-glare materials reduce distracting reflections and unsightly fingerprints, while IPS technology affords wide, 178° viewing angles so more people can look on with better quality from almost any direction. Even in the dark, Zenbook Prime shines, using a high-comfort backlit keyboard so you can keep working and enjoying without disturbing others. And for face to face communications, the built-in HD camera does your conversations great justice.

To complement its superior visual finesse, Zenbook Prime includes exclusive ASUS SonicMaster audio technology, developed together with Bang & Olufsen ICEpower®. Sharper high notes, clearer vocals, deeper bass, and a wider sound range all impress, completing a remarkably attractive portable multimedia package.

3 out of 5 eggsPowerful but space is very limited

Pros: It light, fast and packs a decent punch. perfect for a word processor with 1 or 2 games on the side. decently durable and has held its weight so far.

Cons: the intel 4000 HD holds it back leaving many games unplayable, also the space on the SSD is about 75GB with win 8 pre-installed so you wont be able to hold hardly anything i have to keep all my movies and games on a HDD. which becomes a pain to carry around plus windows 8 ruins the space due to its size. the LCD has heat leak so im starting to see hotspots on the screen.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat little notebook, bad customer support

Pros: Thin, fast, and extremely light. I almost cut myself on the edge, it is so thin. Looks great on the outside, and when you open the lid. Love the backlit keyboard. Screen is very bright and crisp. Micro-HDMI AND mini-vga outputs. Boots in seconds. Fantastic battery life. I think I was looking at 7-8 hours, typically (a huge upgrade from my 2007 MacBook Pro which gives me about 3). Don't have to carry the charger around everywhere, although it's small enough to not be an annoyance. Enough RAM to get the job done. You have to know going into it that you cannot upgrade this machine, so if the stock machine meets your needs, it is a great buy. That is, assuming it continues to run. See below regarding that one.

Cons: Due to the high resolution and small screen, things can be a little on the small side, but for young eyes, it's not a problem. Picture quality does degrade both on notebook display and external display when you plug an external monitor in. Unplug and it snaps back to extremely crisp, or turn off laptop display and monitor gets extremely crisp.

The laptop did die on me after 3 weeks. I restarted and it never came back on. Backlight on keyboard and screen came on, nothing else. I talked to customer support 3 different times, in the hope that someone would have some ingenious fix they could give me and I wouldn't have to send it in. Each support person gave me a single option to try. No "hmm, ok try this..." just one option. Each "fix" was completely different, however, and some (*cough* number 2) I would not advise trying. #1 told me to hold shift and repeatedly hit f9 while I booted it. Nothing. RMA it, he said. #2 told me to take the back off and take out the battery to do a hard reset. Just to be on the safe side, I asked if taking the back off to get to the battery would void my warranty. "Yes." Ok, I'm going to try someone else... #3 suggested holding the power button for a minute. No help. "RMA it," she said. Deciding it was a lost cause, I immediately RMA'd and am waiting to hear back/receive my replacement. Interestingly enough, FedEx says my package arrived two days ago and Asus still reports no record of my RMA whatsoever. We shall see.

Other Thoughts: I've been a computer technician for a while, and I know these things happen. I've had great experiences with my other ASUS products, and I don't blame them that my notebook only lasted 3 weeks, it's still under warranty so no harm done, assuming the next one lasts me a little longer. I'm basing my review on how I liked it while it was running. Frankly, I loved it. It is exactly what I was looking for. I'm only taking an egg off partially because it is not upgrade-able (I secretly wish I could double the RAM) and mostly because the customer support was anything but helpful. I'd probably take half an egg off for that though, were it an option.

3 out of 5 eggsSo-So Unit

Pros: Beautiful Design, exquisitely built and very good solid unit. Enjoyed the feel of using it and the keyboard is second to none.

Cons: All components are soldered to the board and irreplacable. Don't make the mistake I did thinking you can upgrade "anything"!

Other Thoughts: Not really the fault of the manufacturer but a $92 re-stocking fee, plus $32 handling, PLUS I have to pay for the shipping back! I've been a loyal customer for the past 5 years but this really put you folks down a few notches...

5 out of 5 eggsCan't recommend highly enough

Pros: I've been using this as a secondary computer and primary travel PC for 8 months now and I absolutely love it. It's not 20% cheaper and I may get one for my wife. It's fast, the screen is fantastic, and it's super light. It also looks great IMO. I might actually prefer the keyboard on this machine to the keyboard on my desktop. Two thumbs way up.

Cons: Windows 8, but I'm sorta used to it now =)

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a lightweight laptop, it's hard to go wrong...especially at this price.

5 out of 5 eggsDream laptop waiting for Linux

Pros: Very solidly built laptop with great LCD display. This is my dream laptop.

Cons: Although there is some bloatware, mostly ASUS-ware installed with the OS (Windows 8), it's the usual set for Asus and not too bad.

Other Thoughts: I really want to install Linux but what I've read online regarding power management is why I'm waiting (until they make the drivers take advantage of power-saving capabilities). I'm a linux guy but I'm making do with Windows for now.

5 out of 5 eggsBeautifully Designed and Quiet

Pros: 1. Very quiet. I mean, it's really quiet. Even when the fan is on for medium tasks, I still barely hear it. For the most part, it cannot be heard.

2. The build looks quite awesome, even the bottom metallic panel looks like.

3. SSD is quite fast.

4. The included ASUS bag/envelope is just outright awesome.

Brought this notebook to a business meeting and the client commented on it's beauty.

Cons: 1. Not really, the notebook's fault, but Windows 8 tiles are kind of a nuisance on a non-touchscreen notebook. Moreover, I think those "live" tiles makes the computer a little slow. Turned them all off, and it behaved like Win 7, and is fantastic. No egg deduction here.

The top does attract fingerprints, but that's covered in other reviews.

Other Thoughts: Definitely worth the buy. Some complained about the battery life, but not a concern for me, as I never had to use it for past 3-4 hours non-stop without an outlet.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Ultrabook --- But Beware

Pros: Pros:

*Amazing IPS Display -- One of best on the market
*Decent CPU/GPU combo -- Perfect for a low-voltage system
*Great form factor, lightweight
*Aluminium design looks great
*Keyboard
*Quiet for 90% of use

Cons: ASUS SELLS THIS MODEL WITH TWO DIFFERENT SSD HARD DRIVES. One model (AData) is excellent. The other model (Sandisk) is terrible. It's shocking that they don't tell customers about the difference in models.

Other Cons:
*Touchpad -- It's awful
*Webcam
*low memory (4GB)
*The ULV CPU and Intel 4000 graphics means this can't do any performance intensive applications (no video editing or gaming)
*limited number of ports. You need an adapter to use the HDMI port. It only has 2 USB ports (+1 SD Card reader)
*No apparent way to get rid of the 4 other disk partions that waste 40% of the HD

Other Thoughts: I won the lottery with this laptop. Mine came with an AData hard drive. There is no way to tell which drive you will get until you open up the box.

It's a great ultrabook for the money.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great alptop for my wife to go to school and everday use. Sturdy construction and great boot times.

Cons: Oversensative laptop mouse funstion and no backlit LED keyboard. Owned laptop for less than a year and the sound has stopped working. Tried reboot and driver install, no help.

Other Thoughts: Other than the sound no longer functioning and Newegg sending me the incorrect model of laptop, good device.

5 out of 5 eggsfantastic!

Pros: I think for the price you cant beat it. Current promo at $719 shipped NEW, not referb or open.
I paid $799 for mine and love it. The i5 3317u @1.7ghz is the same performance as 1.7ghz i7m cpu's. 4gb of DDR3 seems to be good on WIN8. I run many tabs on firefox and ms office apps, java, and virtual desktop no problem, including anti virus ON.
Very fast boot and awake from sleep. Construction as good as 2013 macbook air. I would buy air but I need win8 for work applications. battery is very long if running linux or ubunto vs win8. win8 about 8 hrs. Very cool, very quiet. Better than the sony ultrabook I returned at $1099. I like the keyboard feel better than the air too. Trackpad not AS good but good

Cons: Not touchscreen, but hardly a con more a lack of option. The i7, 8g, SSD touch is $2100

Screen could be a litter brighter. speakers a bit louder for movies, but VLC app plays at 200% which fixes the low volume.

Will require larger external drive for users with large media, I have about 50gb free and only have apps 1 movie. Comes with 32gb ASUS cloud storage free

5 out of 5 eggsLight, Fast, Does what I need

Pros: + Full HD Panel (1920x1080) on a 13" screen makes for nearly invisible almost retina-like pixels. Yes, text is smallish, but you can increase font size to compensate.
+ Touchpad works well, I have no complaints. I turned off the stupid charms bar edge swipe and use StartIsBack. Nice, Windows 7-ish goodness.
+ Laptop boots up plenty fast, even a cold boot. I get impatient waiting for a laptop to boot-up just to check something, but this is fast enough that I'm happy.
+ Doesn't generate much heat, so battery last for hours -- especially if you dim the screen some. Backlit keyboard spoils me, I'll never own another laptop without it. Just love it.
+ Keyboard is spacious enough for me to touch type, but understand there is no 10-key and the inverted cursor t-pad is smallish. The island style keyboard reduces typing errors and the key throw and tension is good. But YMMV as keyboards are very personal.

Cons: + Text is pretty tiny. But this is a 1920x1080 13" screen, what do you expect? Because an ultra-book like this strives to squeeze max life from a charge, it's not as fast as as desktop i5 would be. But that's to be expected.
+ The included USB to Ethernet dongle is only 100Mbit -- pathetic. For around $40 here on NewEgg, you can buy a gigabit adapter that's also a USB3 hub. Search for "USB303HE". I use it instead of the included dongle.
+ There's no included mini-HDMI adapter, but there is a mini-VGA adapter.

Other Thoughts: Bear in mind, this is an ultra-book. A laptop designed first and foremost to be highly portable and run a long time on a charge. It's not a gaming rig so it's not going to be as fast as a larger laptop or desktop. But it's plenty fast enough. I use this in client offices for programming routers and doing research while fixing a client's workstations, server, or networks.

RAM and SSD
I've been inside this thing: You cannot upgrade the 4GB of RAM, it's soldered to the mobo. Tis a shame, I would have liked 8GB. But really, for what I do, 4GB is plenty. The 128GB SSD is a plug-in, but it's not in the traditional 2.5" laptop drive form factor. It's an open circuit board with an edge connector. You can swap in a 256GB, but why? Unless you store movies or a ton of photos and music, the 128GB is enough.

I have 75GB *free* after loading my stuff, creating an image, then whacking the 20GB recovery partition and some other useless partitions.

I bought mine at a competitor for $850. Sorry, NewEgg, they beat your tail on that.
