1 out of 5 eggsOverpriced piece of junk

Pros: None

Cons: Motherboard replaced twice due to poorly designed input, used 99.9% on desktop, never unconnected the power, yet Motherboard had to be replaced by slackjawed Asus support droolers at month 13, and again at month 27.

Other Thoughts: NEVER buy anything from Asus1

5 out of 5 eggsGood Laptop

Pros: Lightweight, powerful, and an attractive design. I have had this laptop for over a year now. We bought a few others for people in the company at the same time and they all have worked great without a flaw. Great several hour battery life as well.

Cons: No complaints here. You may miss an optical drive once in a blue moon, but I leave a USB CD Drive on the desk and am happy.

Other Thoughts: Obviously it is on the expensive side. If you want a powerful, attractive, lightweight package this hits the target.

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable Product and EVEN MORE Unreliable Warranty and Customer Service

Pros: Was great while it worked.

Cons: Completely stopped working in about 3 months. Would not power up. Worst part of it, having to deal with Asus's customer service. I spent my personal money to ship overnight. Asus received it on a morning and did not log it in the system until six (6) days later. It's still sitting there for almost 2 weeks and when I call they simply say that they are waiting for parts and could not tell me when I would receive the repaired product. if you are going to charge this much for a freaking laptop, stand behind your product and provide quality customer service! STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT AND ASUS. It pains me to say this as I have purchased numerous Asus products, but I do not think I would want to deal with their clueless customer service ever again in the future!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Ram,

I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you due to an unavoidable circumstances. We value our customers and do stand behind our products. Should you need further assistance, please email me at and write down service# 3561588 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

1 out of 5 eggsOne more critical missing piece

Pros: See my previous two posts

Cons: See my previous two posts.

Note that I planned to take this laptop to a client site where I would be leaving it in meeting rooms and sometimes unattended cubicles. I was shocked that there is no Kensington lock on this thing.

OK if ASUS charged $200, but they don't. Wow, what a lack of professionalism on ASUS' part.

Other Thoughts: One year later and I can't say enough bad about the laptop that I originally loved. Please do yourself a favor and pass ASUS by unless it is for a cheap Android tablet.

1 out of 5 eggsExtremely Poor Circuit Board Connection Quality

Pros: See my earlier review for the Pros.

Cons: See my earlier review about the power cord pulling out 8-10/day. Awoke this morning to a dead laptop. I checked the power supply with a multimeter and it's fine. The power input jack is duff.

Note that in addition to this breaking, the audio jack for the subwoofer went bad three months ago. I unplug the subwoofer a walloping twice per week on average. I unplug the power on purpose maybe twice per week.

Sorry, but this is garbage design and quality.

I bought this 50 weeks ago and its going to be in support more times than all of the laptops I've had since 1990.

Stay far away from this laptop!!!

4 out of 5 eggsAWESOME LAPTOP

Pros: I bought this laptop for my wife the scientist in hopes that I won't have to buy another for many years and I am assured already that it was a good investment. I only wanted to spend half as much but the sang falls true one more time, (You get what you pay for).
The notebook is lightening fast.
It can multitask background programs all day long and there is still plenty of speed for me to do whatever I like.
The batter lasts forever.
Keyboard is near perfect.
Touchpad is incredible.
Screen is killer.
It weighs nothing and is thinner than my wallet.

Cons: Windows 8 is 100% BULL$H!T...
If I wanted at app driven OS I would have bought an Apple. I hope Microsoft pulls their head out of their bum and realizes there are still people out here that want a computer to just be a computer and not another iPhone with a keyboard.
EVEN THOUGH Windows 8 is trash and a pain to operate, I would rather put up with it and have this laptop over something else with a different OS.

Other Thoughts: If you can afford it, I recommend it.

5 out of 5 eggsawesome ultra.. sets the standards

Pros: I the OS is not too bad..

- lightweight
- the touchpad is well designed with gestures.. I'm all about shortcut keys.
- it's quite when it's on and sounds like it has good air circulation.. feels cool warm.. though strenuous applications can make the components work harder, i.e. virtualization.
- hibernation/cold boot is very fast, boot time is no more than 5 secs.. that's what it showed me at the bottom of the screen. Configuring sleep mode is the way to go for SSD.
- Windows 8 new UI is not too bad; planning on dual booting with Arch Linux, since I have two SSD.

Cons: - the placement of the vents are on the bottom.. not really effective as Apple designs their vents on the sides

Other Thoughts: I like this build and do not really care for a touchscreen. This is a smooth ultrabook; I would recommend to others. However, the price would make people reconsider. Either way, Asus is a top quality brand that I would recommend.

1 out of 5 eggsASUS UX51Vz-XH71 15.6" Ultrabook Silver Aluminum

Pros: Solid laptop for Computer Science Major

Cons: Defective with flicking screen

Other Thoughts: My son needs the computer in two weeks, got it after one week, but defective, returned within 24 hours, still waiting to receive, my son won't have it on this Sat to bring to college since Newegg won't ship to arrive on Sat. I am willing to talk to Shipping to deliver on Sat.

5 out of 5 eggsThe Best Notebook I've Used

Pros: Audio - Freaking awesome! I didn't buy it for this, but find that Spotify is on 80% of the time as I knock out work without distractions. My neighbor is an audiophile like me, but he's a digital guy with many PCs/Laptops to play music and the first time he heard this, he bought one on the spot/online before going home.

Overall speed - boot up regardless of OS, saving or opening documents, opening browsers, etc. SSDs is what that's all about.

Graphics - See above. Also high definition for everything I do, including video. I am not a gamer, so won't comment on that.

Quiet - I believe that there is an inconsistency in some of the builds as some complain about fan noise. I've never heard a fan on mine, nor has anyone else who has sat next to me at home or in an office. This bugger is dead quiet and never has gotten hot for me. So sorry to be 180 degrees than some folks, but that's my experience and it's a big plus for me.

Keyboard - Love the side 10 digits, it really helps me with spreadsheets. Chicklet keys with adjustable backlighting is just plain slick. I type 110-120 wpm (I started on IBM Selectric typewriters back in the early 70's.) No problems with doing this on the UX51 once I turn the touchpad off (see Cons)

Battery life - I clocked it this morning for my son. Full time NVidia card and never dropping back to the Intel integrated card resulted in 4:41 of battery down to 4 minutes left. I've run 8:15 on battery while traveling mainly at night and display and backlit keys dimmed. That was a real eyeopener for me. Oh yeah, was running Mint Linux 14 at the time, not Win 8.

Bodacious case without a fruit on the lid. This thing never fails to get at least a handful of up close lookers and questions when I pull it out in a conference room full of execs. Everyone is interested in seeing something other than Apple with decent looks, so they have to ask about it. If we're ahead of a meeting far enough, I pull out the subwoofer and play a little bit of whatever their favorite music is. Kills Apple lovers flat when the music starts! THAT is worth every penny to me!!!!

Cons: The power cord pulls out constantly. I understand that the life of the cord is higher by placing it on the side, but it means that my left arm pulls it out 8-10 times a day. Given the shift to the left of the keyboard, it would have been better to place it on the right side or figure out something to make it last while plugging into the back.

Touchpad. ARRRRGGHHHH! I hate it! It acts like an Apple touchpad which means that the cursor bounces all over the place and screens scroll wildly. I kill it whenever a mouse is plugged in via wireless USB (100% of non-airplane time) But when I need to use it on the plane, it is biased to the left due to the 10 key pad on the right, but I can't train myself to deal with that, thereby resulting in many mistakes.

Price - it's a little steep, but given the audio quality and the battery life, I won't whine any more here.

Other Thoughts: I have owned this 6 months exactly.
I broke the RAID 0 config in the BIOS and loaded a clean copy of Win 8 on one drive, Mint 14 (now 15) on the other and it's still faster than anything I've ever touched. I didn't understand the RAID 0 config - just how much faster can it get? Answer: Nada. I ran the RAID 0 for two days with the OEM Win 8 install and could not tell any difference in speed when I broke the RAID and gained another 256GB of storage.

ASUS support is dodgy. They need to consider bringing support for N.America to N.America if they want to compete with Apple. I am a super-tech so it hasn't been a problem for me, but don't know if I can recommend ASUS to anyone not afraid to bust open a sealed case and make changes when required.

Speaking of which, I upgraded to 12GB of RAM and would have liked more. But no problems so far, so no more whining about that. ASUS should consider not soldering a meager 4GB to their motherboard and instead let users upgrade to the fastest RAM they can afford.

If I had to do it all over again, there isn't a single notebook out there that makes me turn away from the UX 51 to consider it. And that's six months after buying it. Good Stuff!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: This is amazing, I bought this to replace my 2011 Macbook Pro. Boot up is under 5 secs, doesn't come with too much bloatware.

Gaming - so far I have ran BioShock infinite, WoW, Tomb Raider (2013), DayZ, and Hitman Absolution at almost the highest gfx. The notebook gets warm (if your playing in bed use a lapdesk or heat mat)

Raid comes in striped already

Screen- is a beautiful matte display no broken or dead pixels.

Keyboard- layout is good but could be improved on (on the screen shot the arrow key is right next to the zero). When working on excel sheets for work my muscle memory needs to be retrained.

Touch Pad- works just like my mac book pro no issues had to turn the sensitivity way down

Battery - could be better I get 3-4 hours compared to my macbook's 7 hours (non-gaming). If I would turn the screen brightness down I can get 4 hours (non-gaming).

Cons: WIRELESS - This might be a deal breaker for some. If you are working on the 2.4ghz band it will disconnect and reconnect randomly. It is a problem with the Intel Centrino 6235. Intel cannot reproduce this in their test labs the engineer that I worked with for close to 5 hours still couldn't figure out what the issue was. He told me this is the same results he's been having with everyone that has posted on the now 24 page forum that worked with him.

If your on the 5ghz band you'll be fine.

I am alittle different then most people having access to enterprise wireless equipment. The best result I have had is with the Ruckus 7972 I can get the full 65mbps internet connection I pay for. Meraki was 42mpbs and Cisco was 20mpbs. All running on 5ghz because of the 2.4ghz problem.

Fan runs constantly while screen is up no to loud but you know its running. Mine came with the BIOS update that fixed this. I guess it was worse that it is now.

Gesture software for touch-pad would crash coming out of a full screen app with usb mouse attached. This is fixed with a drive update.

USB devices will not fully go into the port. I have a non blue tooth mouse and usb still that will not fully insert into the port. I can see the plug hang out by 2mm.

Other Thoughts: All things considered I still love this machine.
