4 out of 5 eggsCan I reformat this?

Pros: It has decent specs. It was good for the price...except for Windows 8.

Cons: Windows 8 -- no one will buy this (I'm a computer consultant/reseller) It's getting molre dificult to find laptops with 7 -- da*n Microsoft!

Other Thoughts: I bought this from NewEgg because I wanted to become more familiar with Windows 8. Since then I have learned that none of my clients wants Windows 8. Not even the younger ones. My plan is to reformat it to Windows 7. Does anyone know if that will pose a problem?

3 out of 5 eggsOverall, Happy

Pros: Beautiful picture, sound, and streaming video. Quick startup when using instant-on.

Cons: Hard drive is LOUD. Not sure if I got a defective one or something, but on startup and certain tasks it makes a fairly loud whining sound. Operation seems fine other than that. Windows 8 is terribly slow and filled with bloatware as usual. Navigation is difficult to get used to. Installing applications is a pain using the "homepage". Windows 7 would make a world of difference. Overall, still happy with my purchase.

3 out of 5 eggsMediocre laptop at an OK price.

Pros: Nice look, nice weight. It's Asus so they would usually have good customer service.

Cons: No backlit keyboard, and shallow keys.

TERRIBLE UEFI BIOS.
TERRIBLE WINDOWS 8.
Loaded with a LOT of bloatware. Asus support failed me in my only request to downgrade from Windows 8 which is an awful experience to the more business related Windows 7. I called and they picked up very fast, took down a LOT of information, and then when I said I just wanted to boot from DVD to install Windows 7, which is incredibly hard to do on this machine, the operator literally just said, "I'm sorry I can't help you..." Before he paused to listen to me breathe in shock.

Trackpad is weird and doesn't respond too well sometimes.

Other Thoughts: For those of you who want to try Windows 8, great!

I'm a tech with 12 years of in depth repair and programming skills, and figuring out how to boot from USB or DVD is insane! The new BIOS is a firmware that blocks you from doing what you want, and will put you in for endless hours of looping terror.

Disable Secure Boot and Enable CSM from within the BIOS by holding F9 at startup, and then you can install another OS.

Overall this should've been better for $500.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for the poor experience with customer support. While it is possible, the UEFI makes it impossible to downgrade to Windows 7. However, we do allow you to disable it from the start-up. Once disabled, you will be able to downgrade to Windows 7 Professional. Again, I apologize that customer support was not able to walk you through this process. Hopefully, you were able to install it without any issues and now you can fully enjoy the laptop. If you have any other comments, or feedback, please feel free to direct them my way. I can be reached at cl-tien@asus.com.

Best Regards,

Tien
