3 out of 5 eggsModerate price for a moderate laptop

Pros: Simple interface
Good size screen
Average performance
Good sound quality

Cons: Start scrren function was obviously meant for touch capability, kind of begs the question "Why install it on a non-touch capable device?"
The touch pad is a little overly active (I use a USB mouse anyway)
CPU is too slow to be of any use other than basic functions, and under-powered, older games
Graphics can still be glitchy due to processing power

Other Thoughts: Shouldn't be this expensive, but not bad for basic functions of a computer.

1 out of 5 eggsDON'T BUY!!!

Pros: Nice-sized screen (15.6"), good max resolution, decent graphics, multi-touch/gesture-sensitive trackpad (makes scrolling left/right & up/down, zooming, right-clicking, and a multitude of other tasks exponentially easier), relatively light-weight, USB 3.0, EXCELLENT built-in audio quality, full keyboard with number pad, nice and thin, 64-bit Sandy Bridge Pentium Dual-Core, doesn't get hot on palm rests, lid isn't very flimsy, very good wireless range.

Cons: First of all, when I bought this laptop, I wanted very little in the way of performance and graphics. I did my research, and found that the Pentium B980 used was almost every bit as powerful as a 1st Generation Intel Core i3 mobile processor, and the laptop advertised a memory speed of 1600MHz (PC3-12800). It came with a PC3-12800 speed DIMM, 4GB in size. But this CANNOT BE UPGRADED!!! And even though the laptop used 1600MHz memory, the use of a Pentium processor only allowed it to run at 1333MHz. The processor was decently quick, however, until the Windows 8 installation it came with became unstable to the point where it couldn't be used. I tried using the Windows 8 repair utility after it had to restart after a random BSoD, and the installation became irreparably corrupted. I did not recieve a Windows 8 OEM re-installation disc, nor was there even an OEM sticker with a product key. I was forced to attempt an install of Windows 7. I tried with a retail copy of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit. I tried using a DVD, an installation USB, and even a network boot using my server at work. Regardless of what I tried, I could NOT install Windows 7 on the system by any means. I tried swapping the hard drive with a brand-new one (which I tested first) and could not install Windows 7 or the copy of Windows 8 I was forced to purchase. I repeatedly called Asus throughout the entire process, and they did not return my calls, time after time placing me on unanswered hold for hours. I finally broke down and tried to install Linux Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (64-bit), which caused the laptop to continuously restart to no end. I finally got Linux Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed, which also quickly became unstable, and I had to re-install it a week later. I am now on my fourth install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and it just became corrupted AGAIN!!! The laptop randomly restarts no matter what the OS is, the 2-second boot-up does not work AT ALL!!!, the battery life is decent from the factory but quickly decreases to only an hour on LOWEST SCREEN BRIGHTNESS after only two-three months, and the keys are extremely low-quality. Even though it's a full keypad, the numeric keypad is only present because they narrowed the keys by nearly half thir normal width, making then insanely difficult to use and therefore just about useless. I would not recommend this laptop to ANYONE!!! This product becomes a CRIME to sell at $420!

Other Thoughts: This is overall a bad product. If a little more time and effort was put into designing it, they may have worked out the bugs, but I wouldn't even buy this product at $300. Now I'm stuck with an out-of-warranty, non-returnable item, which I refuse to pay return shipping on, and if Asus has any quality in their customer support department, they will respond to this and make things right. I can provide any and all documentation they want, and this item was not purchased on this account. It was purchased on another Newegg account I use for my business, the details of which I can also provide. Unless this situation is resolved, I will never buy or recommend ANY Asus product of ANY KIND!!!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat For the money

Pros: Fast processing
Very Good Video
Budget priced

Cons: Track Pad a little flaky

Other Thoughts: Very good laptop for the money. The full size keyboard with number pad cause you to type off center from the laptop creating a situation where you are off by a letter as you type, until you get used to it. I am still not used to it! The processor is very fast and the laptop can be used for many business tasks but would not be good for any heavy duty computing like CAD or video games. Great for the budget minded!
