4 out of 5 eggsUpdate to my previous review

Pros: I swapped out the hard drive for an SSD today. It took about 20 minutes with no hassle. Took out 9 screws from the bottom cover and it popped right off. Removed 3 screws to pull the hard drive out and 4 screws to remove the HD mounting brackets.

Cons: The hard drive is a thin 7mm drive instead of a 9mm drive. Make sure your replacement drive is the thin 7mm form factor and you will be allright. The included 320gb HD is a bit slow. The SSD made a big difference.

Other Thoughts: Now I have a budget Ultrabook with NO Windows 8 metro tiles for under $400. Sweet!

5 out of 5 eggsGood solid laptop

Pros: This is a good solid laptop at a good price. I was looking for an inexpensive laptop without Windows 8, and this fit the bill nicely. Asus makes a similar model with Windows 8, but it costs $80 more because of the Microsoft tax. 320gb HD and 4gb RAM. Feels more solid that the Samsung Google Chromebook. 320gb HD and 4gb RAM, compared to the 16gb SSD and 2gb RAM in the Chromebook. You can easily install other operating systems, which is nearly impossible on the Chromebook.

Cons: 1/2 pound heavier than the Chromebook. Battery life 30% less than the Chromebook. Boots in 20 seconds, compared to 7 seconds with the Chromebook. Ubuntu is a good alternative to Windows 8, but it may not be for everyone. Ubuntu Linux won't run most Windows programs like Microsoft Office, but it does include Libre Office, which is a compatible office application.

Other Thoughts: I was concerned that the 1.1ghz Celeron processor would be too slow. It seems fast enough. It's faster than the 1.3ghz AMD K325 Athlon 2 Turion processor in my old Toshiba laptop. The Celeron is a Sandy Bridge processor with integrated Intel graphics with a 17w TDP rating. I installed Linux Mint 13 along side Ubuntu 12.04 for a dual boot, and Mint recognized all the hardware just fine. If you want a more traditional desktop environment like XP, I recommend installing Linux Mint MATE instead of Ubuntu or Windows 8.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Quality Notebook

Pros: Nice hardware specs; Ubuntu OS.

Cons: RMA'ed the first one due to bad battery after 1 week. Returned the second one for a refund since it arrived with a dead Ethernet port. Won't be getting another ASUS notebook anytime soon.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for posting your feedback on the X201E laptop.

Although a computer may fail due to random issues, it is very uncommon for a computer to fail twice; it is unfortunate, in your case, both the replacement and the original model you purchased malfunctioned. With that said, I am glad you were able to get a full refund. Hopefully in the future, you will be able to give another ASUS system a chance.

Should you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding ASUS or its products, please let me know through email at cl-mark@asus.com.

Regards,

Mark

5 out of 5 eggsNice Notebook

Pros: Fast, good specs, plays HD video, ample RAM, decent performance, high quality LED backlit LCD.

Cons: HDD is on the small side, audio levels are very weak

Other Thoughts: For the price I paid, it does quite nicely. I could think of better notebooks with longer battery life, but this does what I need it to do. Anybody who posts a review claiming otherwise, doesn't know what they're talking about. There is a Windows 8 version of this same notebook, for $90 more.

5 out of 5 eggsI dont know what the other guy is talking about

Pros: -Hyperthreading 32nm CPU
-3MB L3 Cache
-Plenty of RAM for light applications
-Sleek exterior, very durable
-Beautiful crisp display
-Clean shiny finish on glass

Cons: -None!

Other Thoughts: Does come with Ubuntu, if you don't like it just make sure you have Windows ready to install. The other review is just garbage. 1 Egg for a bad keyboard? It feels fine to me.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Supposedly Good price and good specs

Cons: The keyboard is very dysfunctional, a couple of keys were misplaced.
The mousepad was one entire button, but you could only click on it if you had your fingers on the bottom.

DONT BUY THIS
