3 out of 5 eggsTop of the line Android tab but has some weak spots

Pros: Has all the bells and whistles an android tablet of its generation should have:
- webcam & mic
-stock/vanilla Android with no bloatware
- NFC
- bright, crisp HD screen
- unlocked 3G GSM sim card slot
-fast processor

Cons: -speakers are horrid
-charging port gets loose very quickly
-a little on the thick side
-after a year the battery wont hold a charge

Other Thoughts: When i first got my Nexus 7, it was amazing. The battery lasted for DAYS with regular use. Surfing, music streaming etc. It handled everything i threw at it, and i could have 15 tabs open in Chrome plus 7 other apps open without a hiccup.
Now, almost 2 years later, the battery lasts 3 1/2-4 hours with just web surfing. I wil leave it on the charger all day in AIRPORT mode with no apps running, come hom eand its still at 62% charge. The only way to charge it comepletely sometimes is to turn it off. And again it only lasts 4 or 5 hours.
The charging port loosend up so much that you can barely hold it in your hand while plugged in w/o it falling out. You have to hold it just right so the chargers prongs stay in. The speakers were never good so that just had to be accepted early on.
The sound is just too small and quiet. Ive had better, louder spekaers on my iPhone 4s and Lumia 521.
Im not sure if its updates or just old age but the processor is constantly freezing up, getting bogged down with just two apps like Pulse and Chrome running. I'll even shut down all background processes and apps that arent system required apps and it will still freeze the screen or go blank all the time. Its beyond frustrating now as i thought KitKat was supposed to use resources better.
I will say that the screen has never had any dead pixels or touch issues, and the 3G radio has never dropped out on me. I like the Nexus line and feel that most of the isues are hardware related so i'll buy another Android tablet, even Nexus if its not an Asus made tab (they made the 2012 Nexus 7). I love Asus's other hardware but im not sure they have their tablet game down perfect yet. That or it's all just the the way products with a 1 year lifecycle are consciously designed now.

4 out of 5 eggsKeep trying, it WILL wake from the Dead

Pros: Fast, inexpensive Tablet (great deal for a 4G Tablet). No bloatware.

Cons: Many DOA's ... probably just low battery after long storage.

Other Thoughts: Almost gave up when it would not power up. Kept trying for over a day and finally it came to life and is working great now. Observing the charging current and trying things like power and volume down until it got a steady 0.8W or so helped finding the right way.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat tablet

Pros: very responsive touch screen, good size for one-hand reading, fast enough to play most games, wifi and 4g connects quickly, very good price

Cons: battery heats up during game, took forever to upgrade to 4.4, see other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: A lot of people had the DOA issue. It is the battery. My guess is since it's been very long since it's been sitting in warehouse, the battery is completely drained. When you initially plug in the charger, the device probably won't have enough juice to start the charge. I had the same surprise after left it charge overnight. It won't turn on, just a hint of backlight. I had an old usb charger with 5.4V 2.1A from old Dell PDA days. So i plugged in. 5 minutes later, it was booting up. And then happy story.
So if you have the DOA issue, or just see a faint glow without usual startup. Get something with a little higher volt to give it a kick. Don't know how high it can take before really 'DOA'.
Good luck.

5 out of 5 eggsFixed Problem

Pros: Good solid tablet, Kit Kat 4.4, good storage space, pretty good battery life. OTA capability. great looking screen etc.

Cons: not a 2013 model. only 1 camera

Other Thoughts: After 1 1/2 years my 10 yo son dropped it on the floor and I had a screen that would not display more than a bare glow when turned on. It seems some of the tabs are coming new with the same problem.
Mine was no longer under warranty so I looked on youtube and found out how to open the case and found the battery plug had pulled half way out. I pushed it back in and it fired right up. I will bet most of the doa's suffer similar problem 2-3 mm extra room for the battery and a too short wire. Simple repair. I got lucky this time.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: can't beat the price for a mobile 4g tablet.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: not sure why some people are having this DOA issue, I pick up 2 of these, one from new egg, both build jan 2013. of course both of them wouldn't boot up at first due to completely dead battery, after 30 minutes of charging, both of them booted right by. did I just got lucky?

5 out of 5 eggsAn MVP

Pros: Updatable to Kit Kat (Android 4.4). WiFi is decent (though not superb). Screen is clear, and if you expect 720p that's what you're gonna get for resolution. It's enough for me, for now.

It's also equipped with 4G, but I have yet to try it. I plan to soon!

Cons: Didn't realize at the time that it was a "2012" (built in 01/2013) model until after it shipped. I love it all the same, save for the thicker body (about as thick as iPad1), older Tegra 3 chip and nuisance of having to update at all. Forgivable sins.

Other Thoughts: With all this amazing tech, and screens that connect me to the world's information wherever I may be, I feel like I'm living in the future I dreamed of as a mere tot. Be grateful for it :)
