2 out of 5 eggsLow price, dissapointing service

Pros: Bought this K55A refurb after many positive ASUS refurb experiences. The unit performed well for the price I paid (329 after rebate).

Began experiencing boot errors referencing PXE-ROM Media Test Failure, which I worked around for several months, assuming there was some setting I hadn't correctly configured after installing an old SSD. Finally investigating the error deeper, I changed the boot order in BIOS to try Windows Boot Loader before the Realtek PXE-ROM. Upon save and exit, I get a blank screen and no POST. The unit is a brick, with no amount of F2 pressing or battery/AC adapter cycling improving the situation.

My disappointment is not so much with a defective refurb, but ASUS' refusal to work with a loyal customer. The defect is widely reported online (google "K55A PXE black") and obviously existed from the day the unit was shipped to me. Now here I am, (having worked around the problem to save myself and ASUS support the hassle of working on a unit that I, with my expertise, may have solved on my own) 20+ days out of warranty, and ASUS wants $150 to fix something that was defective from the start. I understand the warranty is 90 days in black and white, but I'm very disappointed with ASUS for not considering the circumstances in this case, where the issue is not related to wear and tear or normal product lifespan.

Cons: Apparently too common defect bricks the unit when you correctly set boot order.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product. I'm sorry if you are having issue booting up the system normally. The boot error means the BIOS failed to detect a bootable device. Please verify if the Boot sequence was setup correctly, assuming the SSD is the boot disk or system disk. Also, please verify SATA configuration was setup correctly. I apologize if the 90-day warranty coverage for the laptop expired. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3163347 on the subject line.

3 out of 5 eggsWindows difficulty

Pros: Everything looks good. Good price for the quality of the laptop

Cons: I don't know what the expectations were of this but apparently I need to activate Windows 8? I was under the impression that Windows 8 was already active on this laptop. It's asking for a product key but it didn't come with one. I'd like to have this answered to figure out what's the deal on it and if it should have been already activated, then having someone email me a product key instead of returning the computer would be a better option.

Also, like the other reviews, it was already partitioned which wasn't difficult to change it back.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I'm glad that you were satisfied with the laptop. Yes, WINDOWS is suppose to be pre-activated and no need to enter a WINDOWS Product key. If WINDOWS is not activated and requires a product key, please do the following.

First click on “Start” to go to the Homepage then click “Control Panel”. From the Control Panel, click “Activate Windows” if wireless connection was not established, please use the phone process.

If the option is not available, scroll down on “Control Panel” then click on “More settings”, “System and Security” then System. From the System properties, you can activate Windows or click “Change Product Key” to get a new key from Microsoft, if activation process failed.

If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3070058 on the subject line.

Regards,

Rodel

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Plenty. Fast, powerful, lightweight, and very easy to work with. I ordered 2 of this exact model with win8. Booted them one time to verify they worked out of the box, then formatted them with Fedora 19. Very easy to disable the secure boot and away we went. Love these laptops.

Cons: Not sure if this is a Newegg thing or an Asus thing, but in this order I am having to return one of them for a few reasons.

1. The wifi will work for about 1hr, then it will constantly drop and refuse to stay connected even when less then 15ft and in direct line of sight with zero interference of the wifi router. not acceptable.

3. the display on the same model has a section that looks like it is constantly being pushed. this is a LCD screen so if you know what that looks like you can understand that issue. I find this very odd and not standard of the 3 that I have worked with.

Other Thoughts: If you can get this laptop at a discount it is well worth the money. I have yet to spend more then $400 including s/h for each of the three and I am looking to buy a 4th soon as funds are not as tight. Would I pay the $550 for one, probably not. there are better systems with more RAM and better CPUs for the $550 price tag, but this is hard to beat in the sub $400 range its a bargain. These last two I paid $380 with free s/h each.

Great deal.

5 out of 5 eggssweet deal!

Pros: The price. I just bought mine as an open box (refurb). It was less than two hundred and seventy five dollars. I thought I was taking a risk but so far it is awesome. Not a scratch or even a smudge on it. It looks factory new. I installed an SSD I had laying around and put Win7x64 on it and this thing is crazy fast! I'm at a Windows desktop in 10-15 sec from power on. No doubt the SSD makes it that fast but still it's pretty sweet. Hands down the best deal I've ever got on any laptop.

Cons: The touchpad is sensitive. It works fine but it takes a minute to get used to it.

3 out of 5 eggsGood but ...

Pros: It sounded like a goof laptop, unfortunately it arrived without a battery. Since I was leaving for trip I could not wait for the battery to arrive and had to request for a RMA. Newegg was very helpful in assisting with RMA

Cons: Did not come with battery.

4 out of 5 eggs2 months later

Pros: Price was good, now even better. i5, 4000 graphics, hdmi out ASUS responded to these reviews

Cons: All plastic, scratches easily, display is very flexible. Windows 8 = meh. Yes HDD is partitioned and was hidden on mine. Have mouse problems here too. Will do as ASUS rep suggests. I use an external as mouse interferes with typing if you barely touch it while typing. I reduced sensitivity, no difference. Now when I restart can't find mouse for pad. Have to connect external then remove for mouse pad mouse to appear.

Other Thoughts: Want to replace drive with Blu Ray drive. Unhappy with W8=4 stars, unhappy with plastic shell and VERY flexible display=3 stars. Response by ASUS support=4 stars.

3 out of 5 eggsTouchpad too big or poor placed

Pros: This notebook is about everything I need for a budget notebook. For the price, it's a good value. It was easy to replace the hard drive to SSD, upgrade the RAM with an additional 8GB module, and swap out the Wifi card to support dual band.

Cons: However, the reason I'm giving it 3 stars is the touchpad ruins the entire experience. I initially thought it would take time to get used to but just typing this review I had the cursor move to a new place, delete a selection, pop up a new menu. I'm not sure if I got a defective model, but it seems part of the problem is the placement of a very large touchpad.

Also, didn't come with any Win install disks. The directions said a screen to make backup disks would come up but it didn't. I am using Clonezilla to make my backup image now. Either software wasn't installed or they included directions for a different model (it kept referring to Win 7 and it was loaded with Win 8).

Other Thoughts: Also, for whatever reason, the Flash drive isn't reading any media (tried two different ones - 1GB SD and 8GB SDHC). Will check to see if this was due to my upgrade to SSD and reinstall of Windows) or something else altogether...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Try installing both the ATKACPI driver (hotkey-related utilities) and the ASUS Smart Gesture touchpad driver along with any other drivers your computer needs. As you may already know, you can download these drivers by visiting the ASUS support page.

Once you have the latest Smart Gesture program installed, open it up and go into the Settings. Disable any of the advanced swiping gestures the program has activated and just keep the basic ones that you want to use. After adjusting the settings, you will find that the touchpad will be a lot more stable and less frustrating to use.

Should you need further assistance, please let me know. My email is cl-mark@asus.com.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Looks nice.

Cons: A week to arrive. Hard Drive is 200GB. NOT 500GB as stated

Other Thoughts: One week to try, as have to return WITHIN 30 days of purchase.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,

I am sorry to hear that your refurbished laptop has the incorrect hard drive installed.

You mentioned that you were going to exchange the laptop through Newegg; I would recommend doing an exchange before the return period is over. Please note the laptop is covered by an ASUS warranty up to 90 days after your purchase. If your laptop is in need of a repair during the 90 day warranty, please let me know by emailing me the computer's issue along with a copy of your purchase invoice; and I will be happy to assist you. You can contact me at CL-Mark@ASUS.com.

Best regards,
