3 out of 5 eggsDecent build quality hampered by W8

Pros: Nice looking laptop.

Cons: Windows 8. Windows 8. Windows 8. Do not pass go, just install W7.
Shiny finish leaves very visible fingerprints. Strange key layout. Overly sensitive touch pad when you dont want it to be, insensate when you want it to be. Intel HD 4000 has trouble playing movies!?!?!?!

Other Thoughts: Cant really recommend, but I guess I got what I paid for.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's great knowing that you are satisfied with the laptop. I do understand your concern regarding WINDOWS 8 stability issue and touchpad sensitivity. In order to improve system stability and performance, please install all recommended WINDOWS Updates and upgrade to WINDOWS 8.1 before using the system. We recommend using a LAN connection to speed up the update process. In regards to the touchpad, please allow some time to get use to the multi-touch features and you customize the settings inside ASUS Smart Gesture utility. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3630871 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

Rodel

3 out of 5 eggsehhh...........

Pros: good price

Cons: one channel of audio does not work

Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop, turned on only a few times in the 7 months I have owned it. I just noticed one speaker does not work. Too late for me to return it.
Probably won't buy a refurb laptop from Newegg again. I don't think I even turned on but a couple of times in 30 days.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear valued Customer,

It's good to know that you like the good price of the laptop. I apologize if only one channel works with the speakers. All refurbished or recertified products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections. ASUS does provide 90-day warranty for refurbished or recertified products. If you need further assistance warranty service, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3544338 on the subject line.

5 out of 5 eggsLooks like new

Pros: 200$ off
Mint condition
see spec list

Cons: Had issue updating windows 8.1 but that is not really asus's fault.
sold out

Cant fit vga and hdmi plug in together without cutting the vga plug.
speakers are on the bottom.

Other Thoughts: For the price cant get a better laptop right now. Was kind of skeptical due to being refurbished but I wouldn't even have known except for the fact that they told me.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I ordered this on black Friday for it had a good deal on it and I needed a laptop for college this coming year.

Cons: When I got it I first charged the battery then turned it on. It didn't boot so then I removed the battery and waited 10 seconds, then put it back in and tried again. It booted so I ran through the setup for windows 8 and rebooted. Then it started and I logged in and got "This product key didn't work. Please try another key".

So I call ASUS and they said I would have to ship it to them to get it fixed, but I didn't want to pay to ship it back so I didn't.

Then I tried to watch some youtube videos and the screen froze with lines through it and was shaking. I closed the laptop and opened it back up to get a still frozen screen with lines, so I shut it off by holding the power down. When I tried to turn it back on it did nothing, like when I first turned it on so I removed the battery again and tried it. It booted so I tried a game I like (World of Tanks) on minimum settings and the screen froze with lines and shaking.

Whenever the on-board graphics are used heavy like "videos/games" the screen freezes with lines and shaking.

I'm very displeased with this laptop, I had high hopes for it because its from ASUS. I am also displeased that I need to pay to return a defective product. I do not recommend this product or ASUS' customer service. I do not plan to buy any more refurbished products from them.

3 out of 5 eggsMeh

Pros: Very nice overall laptop. Nice image, loved the back lit keyboard, and it was fairly fast for the price.

Cons: very very easy to brake screen.

Other Thoughts: If I could buy this computer again I would. But with no accidental coverage I would not.

5 out of 5 eggsI LOVE IT!!

Pros: the backlit keyboard, with the descent size hard drive you never need to worry about running out of space, adequate memory allows the laptop to operate smoothly and efficiently.

Cons: no cons

Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop brand new and I have to say I am thoroughly impressed with the smooth operation of the machine. Windows 8 is very easy to use once you get used to it and I love the fact that you can change the background color. This is a very fun version of windows!!

1 out of 5 eggsScreen broke in 60 days

Pros: Price looked good.

Cons: Screen broke in 60 days.

Other Thoughts: Purple vertical line appeared on the screen 60 days after purchase. Could not get the unit replaced as 30 days had passed. Sent in for repair under the 90 days warranty. It's been two weeks since I send the laptop for repair and it's still in repair?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for the issue you are having with this unit the the service turn around time. Please feel free to send me an email at cl-fred@asus.com so that I can look into this case and check what the hold up is.

3 out of 5 eggsBE AWARE - NO RESTORE DISCS WILL YOU GET

Pros: Great hardware / power for the money.
Computer works fine and is a great value

Cons: You will not have the ability to create your Windows 8 backup discs because ASUS deletes the restore partition during the refurbishment process. ASUS WILL NOT send you any restore discs because according to them "they do not exist".
POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE WITH ASUS regarding the issue of getting restore discs for a computer with their name on it. We ended up being forced to purchase an operating system so that we could restore and re-store again any time we needed.
COUNT THE COST OF THE ADDED PURCHASE OF AN OPERATING SYSTEM with this laptop.

3 out of 5 eggsNice box - bad system with Win8

Pros: Well built, stable laptop, does what is expected.

Cons: Win8 interface for a non-touchscreen device - LOSER. That may change with 8.1 or whatever MS will call it, but until then, program/tile/shortcut/file access is a problem. Next problem - Asus does not support Win7 for this model. Their website only has Win8 drivers. And there is no detailed component level documentation you can use to find Win7 drivers piece by piece for the system Win7 installs, but no wireless or other support. The Realtek site wants you to know the hardware component to download a driver for it, when you don't they route you to a screen to pay for something called Driver Tuner that apparently can recognize your components (not disclosed by Asus) and find, download, and install the right drivers for it. Not at all friendly for Win7, and not easy to use with Win8. STAY AWAY until Win8.1 or whatever. Not sure Asus will update their drivers for it, but we'll see. Last, the touchpad is so big and placed close to the keys to the point where touch typing is very difficult without hitting it, moving the cursor on the screen while typing, and then junking up your document - over and over again unless you use a mouse. So practically, when typing, the touchpad is unusable. When browsing and just pointing, it works as desired. Last, their support website does not truly distinguish between models - the Q500A has a list of files, but there are several models of it. This one, BHI5N01, is non-touchscreen and differs in other hardware specs from other sub-models; you would never know it from their support website.

Other Thoughts: The lack of system documentation really separate Asus from the tier 1 manufacturers like Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Their components, and hardware execution in general, are as good or better, but without professional documentation, you take it as it or will become very frustrated.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: Intel i5, 6GB DDR3, backlit keyboard, Full keyboard with numeric pad, price

Cons: None to mention

Other Thoughts: Fast computer at a good value. More than capable for everyday tasks and maybe some gaming. I would suggest installing an SSD, I found that it is a big performance boost over the 5400rpm drive the laptop shipped with, I used the Samsung 840.
