1 out of 5 eggsPower Problem

Pros: Great specifications for the price
Beautiful Design, good quality screen and keyboard
Runs Windows 8 with little bloatware
Able to run my favorite games(Dota 2, Civ 5)

Cons: After 3 months the laptop started to randomly shutdown
I was unable to charge the battery and eventually unable to run it without being plugged in
Now it will only power on for short periods of time and only after unplugging everything(adapter, battery) for hours and letting it sit
Obviously a power problem, others online have mentioned a faulty DC plug but the repair process involves soldering and dismantling the entire device.

Other Thoughts: It's a shame that it broke, it appeared to be a quality refurbish

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

1 out of 5 eggsworst purchase

Pros: Good design and really high end specs for the price

Cons: did not last. I have 3 desktops,2 laptops and 3 other pads. This one was hardly used since i got it. Probably no more than 20 times, and it just totally died, within 6 months. The power circuit on the mother board is at faulty.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for the positive comment with the laptop. I apologize if the system failed to power on after 6 months. Please verify if the AC adapter are properly connected from the laptop to a working surge protector or AC outlet. Please try to disconnect the AC adapter and let the unit drain for 24 hours to reset and clear the memory. After doing this, please reconnect your AC adapter then power on the unit. If the problem persists, please press and hold the power button, repeat this process a couple of times, until you see an ASUS logo or a battery icon. If a battery icon shows up, let the battery charge fully before turning it on again. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3610018 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

Regards,

Rodel

5 out of 5 eggsGood Computer for the Money

Pros: The computer was able to download VS2013 from the internet within about an hour and I was able to download a couple of games from steam without any trouble.

Cons: Windows 8 is a little difficult to get use especially on a non-touch screen machine.

Other Thoughts: OVerall a very good computer for playing some games and doing some work on. I haven't tried playing any super graphically heavy games but for games like WoW and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time it works like a champ. I have heard that an integrated Graphics Card could make it difficult to play some of the better graphics games

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Laptop

Pros: Really nice backlit keyboard
Nice specs (despite the graphics card)
Good price

Cons: Windows 8 can be a headache for first-timers. Has very bad resolution because of the lack of video memory but you should get used to it fast

Other Thoughts: The laptop overall is nice. Not to big or small and not too heavy or light. The screen is bad but its not designed for gaming. The i7 and the ram are very nice. It's probably the best laptop for its price ( I got it for $485 with a coupon on black friday).

1 out of 5 eggsMega lemon

Pros: Could of been decent.. I'll never know.

Cons: Touchpad was completely screwy and malfunctioning. Tried to reset the computer to defaults and the whole machine wont turn on anymore... Very upsetting to receive a broken machine.....

5 out of 5 eggsGreat budget laptop

Pros: This i7 is a true monster. It is a true quad core but still gets good battery life.
The keyboard is wonderful to type on once you get use to it.
8gb of ram is nice
most laptops this size don't have CD drives, so this having one is a bonus
The intel HD4000 graphics are very capable even for newer games.
I can play kerbal space program easily.
League of legends plays 60FPS at max settings with ease.
750gb drive is plenty big enough.
Asus formatted the drive into a C and D drive out of the box. So I suggest resizing the D drive bigger.
I allocated 100gb to the C drive and then the rest to my D drive.
Very minimal junkware. I only uninstall the Anti virus that comes with it.

The sound card in this laptop is amazing. It blows away even some dedicated sound cards I have had in the past.

This laptop does have bluetooth. It doesn't say it in the specs, but it has intel bluetooth.

The screen is very thin when opened, but doesn't feel fragile at all. Hinges feel very solid as well.
Overall I would put the build quality an 8 out of 10 easily for the money this thing costs.

Cons: The screen isn't perfect out of the box. However this is not an issue with the screen itself, but with the calibration of the screen. Once calibrated, it is beautiful.
Calibration using the windows tools takes all of 2 minutes to do.
The metal is finger print magnet, however it is easily cleaned.
From some angles the keyboard can be difficult to read. But if you are in the dark or bright light it is fine. If you have an overhead light it might create some glare.

Other Thoughts: The laptop is a bit heavy for the size, however it is heavy in the way that makes it feel solid. So it isn't a bad thing at all.

Battery life it right in the middle of the ball park. I get about 3 hours of use with max screen brightness and netflix running. With the screen turned down and not doing anything beyond basic web browsing the battery pushes into the 5 to 6 hour range.

If installing ubuntu on this laptop, it can be finicky with the grub loader. you have to use boot repair to fix the boot settings so that windows will boot again.
It has to do with the UEFI bios.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, great laptop!

Pros: Fast, easy to use, good screen resolution, love the backlit keyboard.

Cons: Only complaints are that windows 8 isn't good for a non-touchscreen (but it's doable) and there is no easy way to turn off the touchpad mouse (I use a wireless mouse).

Other Thoughts: Definitely recommend the purchase of this laptop for someone with a smaller budget, you get a lot for what you pay!

3 out of 5 eggsBuy a refurb with caution

Pros: The system performs as advertised - when it runs. I installed a hybrid drive, and once the drive tuned itself, the "apparent" performance is on par with a good SSD. Battery Life, graphics, as expected. This unit is now giving me the best balance in terms of portability, horsepower to get work done, etc. I risked my $$ and got a race horse, so overall I am happy ( but only 3 stars happy ), the horse could easily have come up lame.

Cons: Its a "quality" refurb. I had to think long and hard before I bought this unit. Whoever is doing these "refurb" tests to assure the system is at factory specs obviously missed issues such as the "dent" near the LEDs/Touchpad causing bigger issues, ie. broken LEDs, Keyboard keys not responding, Touchpad does not necessarily function as one would expect according to the e-manual; please see other thoughts. ASUS does build a quality product, but I question their level of quality when it comes to the refurbished units, either someone "missed the boat" on what is defined as factory refurb, or they are letting the buying public do the actual testing for them.

Other Thoughts: If you have experience repairing portables, and know the risk when buying "quality refurb" hardware, then take the risk... otherwise, u will be spinning the wheel in terms of expecting a "new" device for a "great" price. I ended up taking my notebook apart, inspecting the areas that were predamaged. The power LED and Battery indicator were literally broken from the auxiliary board where the unit had been dented. The connection cables had to be reset and my HDD LED worked; the keypad also became fully functional... The unit was intermittently freezing, so I re-seated the mem modules blew out the small pieces of paper/dust/garbage there. Ran a consecutive memory test and they seem fine now - so far unit hasn't frozen, as I am typing this review.
