4 out of 5 eggsUpdated review "I got a bad one"

Pros: I am reviewing my replacement after the first one came with a dent on the screen bezel and would not power up intermittently.

I am happy to say that this one works as advertised.

The display is very crisp.
The keyboard is great.
Super fast boot times.
Keypad is a vast improvement over my Asus UX31 that was 2 years old.

Cons: Run time is as others posted - about 3.5 hrs with normal load.

Because the screen resolution is so high, it took some fiddling with display settings to get it so that text is readable for me.

The fan noise is more noticeable than other laptops I've had.

Other Thoughts: While Newegg ultimately did the right thing, I was disappointed with their RMA process.

After spending 4 days trying to convince myself that there wasn't a problem with the previous machine, I finally concluded that it wasn't something I was doing wrong, etc and decided to send it back.

I got bad vibes immediately after I initiated RMA as newegg did not issue a prepaid return shipping label. A call to customer service the next day took care of the problem relatively painlessly. But, it seems to me that since the machine was defective that I should not have to pay $20 to ship it back when I already paid $2200 in the first place.

Then after "evaluating" defective machine for less than a day, I got a kurt email stating that there was nothing wrong with the computer, that newegg was going to restore the factory OS image and send it back to me. The email implied that it may have been software I had installed (which was nothing, BTW). It also suggested that if I continued to experience the same issue to deal with the manufacturer. As you might imagine, I was not pleased. I called customer service again and stated my issue. The initial response from the CSR was that it was found not to be defective. I asked about the dent on the bezel and why it wouldn't turn on when I pressed the power button and that I thought those were defects. Ultimately I had to insist on either a refund or a replacement and that under no circumstances was I going to accept the defective unit back.

After some checking with the supervisor, etc and a return phone call an hour later, I was informed they would ship me a new unit. Which arrived about 3 days later. And works.

But, this will always be a somewhat tainted purchase for me. I accept that sometimes with electronics you get a bad one. But returning a defective unit and getting a replacement shouldn't be such a battle. Come on Newegg, you used to be great at customer service, don't slip now!

1 out of 5 eggsgot a bad one

Pros: great design.
very fast boot times - when it worked.

Cons: 1. Would not power on reliably. Despite having fully or nearly fully charged battery sometimes it would not turn on or resume from sleep.

2. Dent in the bezel below the LCD.

Asus clearly spent lots of time on the box. I wish they spent as much time on quality control.

I sent this back to Newegg and will update when the new one arrives.

4 out of 5 eggsbeautiful display

Pros: Beautiful HiDPI display (retina) 2880x1620 with amazing viewing angles and deep true colors.
Excellent design by Asus on their zenbook, very slim and comfortable.
The keyboard is one of the best I have ever typed on and it includes a full numpad.
Best combination of size (15.6", ultraportable, and lightweight), power (i7 processor, 2gb gt650M), display (hiDPI), and battery life out there currently (July 2013).

Cons: Not many, performs excellently in almost every facet. If I had to complain the first would be the price, very expensive... the second would be that the battery life is NOT 7hours as advertised. I would put it at around 3.5hrs during normal use, but in battery saver or lower screen brightness you can extend that upwards of 5 hours, but that is usually plenty of time between charges.

Other Thoughts: If this laptop had the new Haswell processor it would be hands down a 5egg and extremely recommended.

Needs the new Haswell for the extended battery life, and would be nice to have the newer 700 series geforce vid card.

It is expensive but you get what you are paying for, an ultraportable, ultra powerful, and ultra beautiful display. Nothing like it on the market right now. (although I expect that to change rapidly come Q4 of this year)
