1 out of 5 eggs#NEXUS7BRICKED Useless with new update

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: When it works: great screen, fast response, good wifi connectivity, light to hold.

Cons: Hundreds or thousands of Nexus 7s have been reported irretrievably bricked after the latest Android update. Asus treats it as nothing more than out-of-warranty motherboard failure and Google appears to have not responded at all.

Other Thoughts: Here is the narrative. The Nexus 7 2013 version has been working fine. A few weeks after the latest update, it displays the "Google" screen and does not go further into bootup, regardless of any actions taken.

The problem has been reported by numerous users on multiple product forums.

You can find reports of the complains by doing a search for "Nexus 7 locked on Google Screen."

The most likely explanation is that the newest OS update initiated a looping in the flash memory that eventually wears the memory out. This is consistent with the reports that the unit fails again a few weeks even after the motherboard has been replaced.

Asus customer support states they will charge between $100 - $300 if the product is out of warranty. Neither Asus nor Google has responded specifically to this very widespread problem.

Customers should be very wary of buying this product until the problem has been addressed and solved.

For the record, I got my unit at a different distributor and have had it two years before it bricked.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Ronald,

Thank you for the positive comment with the tablet. The tablet failing to bootup after an OS update are isolated cases related to an unsuccessful OS update. Normally, this can be resolved by disconnecting the AC adapter and let the unit drain for 24 hours to reset and clear the memory. After doing this, please reconnect your AC adapter then power on the unit. If the problem persists, please press and hold the power button, repeat this process a couple of times, until you see an ASUS logo or a battery icon. If a battery icon shows up, let the battery charge fully before turning it on again. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150440424 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

3 out of 5 eggsASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: My 11 yr old son raved about this tablet that he received as a gift this past Christmas. He uses it to read books and play games. It has provided many hours of entertainment.

Cons: The tablet will no longer charge. We have tried multiple chargers with no luck. We have only had it for 3 months.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Susan,
I apologize if the system failed to power on after 3 months of usage. Please verify if the USB cable and AC adapter are properly connected from the tablet to a working surge protector or AC outlet. Please try to disconnect the AC adapter and let the unit drain for 24 hours to reset and clear the memory. After doing this, please reconnect your AC adapter then power on the unit. If the problem persists, please press and hold the power button, repeat this process a couple of times, until you see an Android logo or a battery icon. If a battery icon shows up, let the battery charge fully before turning it on again. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150313107 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat, but...

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: Beautiful display, Android OS that is not polluted with Manufacturer bloatware, very fast.

Cons: The notification light on the one I received does not work. Reading around the 'net, this appears to not be a rare problem. I don't care enough to exchange it. But, it gets docked an egg for the lack of QC on ASUS part.

Also, ASUS has the gall to charge $50 extra for an extra 16B of memory for the 32GB model. We all know from the price of USB flash drives that is insanely too much money for a chip that probably costs a couple of bucks. But, of course Google, for some reason has disabled On The Go (OTG) memory [using a USB stick with a micro USB connector as memory) in vanilla Android. Probably at the manufacturers request to get us to buy the extra memory for too much money. You can find software, for a few bucks, that bypasses this limitation for at least some purposes, even on an unrooted device. But, OTG really should just work, like it does on my smartphone.

Other Thoughts: Really a great tablet despite my stated cons.

2 out of 5 eggsnice while it worked

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: Great picture and sound
Great performance

Cons: Lasted about 9 months and started rebooting then completely died.
I assume it overheated and eventually cooked itself.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately it had some minor crack in the casing when i purchased it and I didn't bother to return since everything was working fine at the time. In hindsight I wish I would have exchanged it.

Manufacturer Response:
