5 out of 5 eggsExcellent 7" Android tablet for a Linux user

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: Quad Core CPU that you can really feel.
2GiB of RAM that is definitely useful.
FullHD screen (still renders just as fast as the lower resolution Nexus 4 despite employing the same same SOC.
Very good 802.11n 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi with excellent range.
16GiB is plenty of space for me for now.
Battery life so far for me is pretty good, maybe not the best, but definitely is not disappointing.
Screen is nice and bright and colorful, speakers are loud enough. Headphones on have good bass and clear sound with no background static noise from the internal circuits (excellent internal filtering).

And the single best reason I love this thing...stock pure Android with quick updates and not made obsolete quickly and no manufacturer or service provider bloatware.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Going from a 12" laptop to a 7" tablet for portable computing (work remotely mostly via SSH to other Linux/UNIX systems) sometimes seems like a major change. I might have felt more comfortable with a 10" tablet, but for the price, this got the job done marvelously.

CPU is really fast and responsive. Internal storage is fast enough that I never notice a slow down. Beautiful screen, and awesome sound when used with headphones. I use it as a replacement for my very old ThinkPad that was Centrino powered and started to seem very slow for even basic tasks. But since I used that mostly for working remotely mostly through SSH consoles (as it ran Linux), and the occasional web surfing and email checking, this tablet gets all of that done faster and more efficiently. Only app I felt the need to pay for was JuiceSSH for an SSH experience almost on par with normal SSH on Linux. Although VX Connectbot for free would have sufficed. Very happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsSufficient laptop replacement

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: Small, lightweight replacement for my aging ThinkPad-T43. It's fast, responsive, and has the latest Android without all the gimmiks or unecessary apps other manufacturers put on it. Screen has a good resolution for what I want to use it for. I was able to find all the apps I need to replace all the things I did on my laptop.

Cons: Only con is that it is smaller by a considerable amount than my old 14" laptop. Also the 16GB version of this tablet may prove to be cramped in the future, but for now it's ok.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace my aging ThinkPad T43. I ran Linux on that and used it mostly to work from remote places. Was used to not having a lot of storage in /home (around 20G) only 2GiB of RAM and a not very powerful 32bit only single core CPU. So I used it mostly to ssh to remote servers and administer them, check email, and do some light web surfing. Once the web surfing involved heavy flash or video the experience quickly deteriorated.

That is why after months of thinking and researching the issue I came to the conclusion that the Nexus 7 will work for me as a laptop replacment. I can even do some things with my Nexus 7 that I could not do with my laptop, like watch Netflix and even watch youtube without pegging out the CPU. Also the SSD backed storage of the Nexus 7 makes it feel worlds faster than the HDD the laptop had. I have found a worthy app for SSHing into remote machines and I can surf the web, check email, and even IM message easily with the Nexus 7 just as I could with my laptop. But this is lighter, faster, and has better battery life. Also runs a heck of a lot cooler than my laptop did playing videos.

Also there is no real OS management like there was maintaning my laptop OS, no updating it manually, doing backups, and tinking with it generally. This thing just works. While I have found a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to work with it as if it were a laptop, I am not able to do low level formatting of USB flash drives to create bootable media for Linux and other OSes, so I will miss that. But I figured I have my home desktop and my work workstation for that. And USB flash drives big enough for those uses are now cheap enough that I can prepare 1 or 2 of the more useful ones so I can have them off hand for when I'm not at home or at work.

Overall very satisfied.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent tablet

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: The device was great for streaming movies, youtube, browsing most web sites. Good external build quality.

Cons: Right at 1 year of ownership, the device's internal memory failed and I am still unable to boot it. I sent in an email to the manufacturer's email support but was never replied.

Other Thoughts: I am not sure if a repair is worth it, if it may only be a little more expensive to buy a newer tablet. I would purchase this device again.

2 out of 5 eggsGood tablet but kitkat breaks bluetooth

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: Solid feeling tablet with a great display. I love the QI charging capability! Fast processor.

Cons: Kit Kat 4.4.4 corrupts bluetooth (BT) function, which for me, ruined the experience. The tablet HAD to be able to stream music to speakers over bluetooth, but the Kit kat upgrade caused persistent BT audio drop outs every few seconds that make BT audio unuseable. Google tech support suggested turning off Wi-Fi which is ridiculous when the whole purpose is to stream music to BT speakers. This is basic functionality that I expect to work without issue. Looks like Bluedriod is still not ready for primetime as Google has known about this issue for some time now. In the end, Kit Kat ruined the BT experience and I returned the Nexus 7 to get another tablet that will work with BT speakers.

Other Thoughts: Just be aware that with andriod tablets, in order to have a good overall experience both the tablet (hardware) and OS (kitkat) have to be solid. In this case the software is a disappointment and broke key functionality that I needed. Ironically, older andriod tablets (4.2.2.) work great with BT music streaming but not kitkat.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective touch screen

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: Great for the price - if it worked as advertised.

Cons: Defective touch screen.

Other Thoughts: Immediately noticed that icons would often take several touches to open or that the wrong app launched. Then I noticed typing mistakes and repeated keys. It was clear something was wrong when some typos weren't even near the key I was pressing. Google'd and discovered tons of reports of the multitouch panel being defective. (Google "nexus 7 touchscreen issues") Downloaded app YAMTT which confirmed that screen is terribly defective.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Mike,

I do apologize that your Nexus 7 is not functioning at its full potential. If a hardware reset has not worked to help solve the touch screen issues you are encountering, I recommend sending it in to be diagnosed. I would be more than happy to help assist you with our RMA process. If you are interested please feel free to email me at CL-Scott1@asus.com with your serial number. Also, please put case number # N140922933 in the subject line.

Best regards,
Scott

5 out of 5 eggsNexus 7 (2013)

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: Great tablet. Love multiple user setting. Have login for all family members. Fast. Great audio considering small foot print. Crisp responsive display.

Cons: Nothing major but a little slow updating signal strength when multiple wifi hotspots nearby. List take a little while before displaying accurately and then you can choose best hotspot.

Other Thoughts: I also own a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10in tablet. This Nexus blows it away. Faster. More intuitive menus. Multiple user accounts. I was very disappointed when I could only have on user on the Samsung. I like the Nexus 7 so much I bought two!

2 out of 5 eggsHesitant to order 2nd Gen

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: Great while it worked!

Cons: I'm not sure I want to order this 2nd gen model, as my 1st Gen is now dead. It will not turn on any more. Yes, I am using the charger supplied by Asus. Yes, I have spoken to customer service and they have instructed me how to attempt to start it up. No luck. It's just dead. Google tech support didn't ask me to ship it for repairs, etc. So do I try the 2nd gen Nexus 7 or do I move on to Kindle Fire or Samsung Galaxy? My heart says Nexus 7 but my mind says it's time for a change.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Dentalalf,

I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. Should you need further assistance sending the unit in for service, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3784197 on the subject line.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Tablet!

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: I love just about everything about it! The screen is simply astounding! Performance is crisp and pleasing, touch response is very good, battery life is good, wi-fi range is exceptionally good, I love the fact that this uses a clean OE version of Android and it receives very timely updates to the newest version of Android. The sound is good for such a thin housing, and speaking of the housing, it is light and thin with a rubber backing that is pleasant to hold. Overall fit and finish and attention to detail is superb! A valiant effort overall, I am highly pleased!

Cons: It does not have a micro SD card slot!

Other Thoughts: Overall a great choice for a tablet. It looks and feels like it should be more expensive than it is, I look forward to purchasing the next generation model when it debuts!

1 out of 5 eggsA pretty good little machine ruined by mind-bogglingly poor service

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: It's nice and thin and stylish, much like myself. And it's great to get OS updates quickly.

Cons: When I sent it in for service, they smashed the screen and insisted it had arrived that way even though they sent me photos of it at the repair facility with the screen un-smashed. I found other Asus customers online with exactly the same story.

Since they sent it back, the screen shows quite a bit of banding, sometimes spazzes out and registers fake touches, and other times doesn't recognize any input at all. And what am I supposed to do, send it back to be repaired again?

Other Thoughts: Asus is dead to me. In the future, I will happily pay substantially more for an equivalent product from another manufacturer.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's great knowing that you are satisfied with the nice and stylish design of the tablet. I apologize for your dissatisfaction with the repair service quality. We do value our customer and take negative customer service experience very seriously. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3600080 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.
