4 out of 5 eggsGreat Tablet, until you remember ASUS made it

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: I loved my Nexus 7. I loved how I didn't have to deal with the preloaded stuff you get with devices from bigger brands like ASUS. The screen was utterly amazing and the device overall felt high quality than other mobile devices I had used.

Cons: ASUS made it. I've bought two different tablets from ASUS and I cannot stand their service. Both tablets broke on my behalf, but each time, I recieved the worst support.

My first tablet arrived pretty much broken, with a dead Micro-USB port that caved in on first use, and when I tried to get it fixed (because warranties) I basically got the run-around, and just said forget it.

With both tablets, they told me that the price to fix a broken screen (I keep breaking screens) would be higher than the tablet's worth. Like, I understand that I broke them, but the support I got in light of this was just terrible. I have an ASUS monitor and an ASUS mobo and these are pretty much going to be the last ASUS products I ever have.

Anyways, I wouldn't reccomend getting this tablet strictly because ASUS will end up shortsticking you when something goes wrong.

2 out of 5 eggsNot So Nexus

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: Compact, lite, and interface responses quickly when using. The Quad Core CPU works well and has just enough RAM for a tablet. Great device if you just want something for reading eBooks or browsing the internet from your couch.

Cons: NO SD CARD SLOT!!! You might be able to take pictures with it, but don't have any practical storage space for them. It might hold 3 movies, a dozen apps, and 40 songs with just 16GB of internal memory. At least cell phones with 16GB of internal memory have an sd card slot for expansion and transferring files.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat, until OS update bricked it

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: Great screen, great performance, great form factor.

Cons: Applying 5.1.1 upgrade bricked it.

Other Thoughts: Too bad about the brick. Up until then, it was a fantastic device.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Donald,

I'm sorry if the OS update was unsuccessful and made the tablet unbootable. Please try disconnect the AC adapter and drain the battery fully then reconnect the AC adapter and power on the unit. If the problem persists, you may need to send the unit in for service. If you need further assistance sending it in, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150718241 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggsSatisfied and impressed

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: Fast, very-high resolution, and updates to the latest version of Android -- see "Other thoughts".

Cons: None yet. None of the issues that a few people have reported...so I suspect that the issues are rare. People are more likely to post a review to complain than to praise.

Other Thoughts: Specs on the Newegg listing say "Android 4.3", but mine had 5.0.2 installed when I turned it on for the first time. And it soon notified me that 5.1 was available to download and install, which I did. And then it notified me that 5.1.1 was available to dl and install, which I did. So this 2-yr-old device is now totally up to date! :-)

5 out of 5 eggsMy Nexus 7 Affair

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: Awesome screen color and definition, very fast CPU, Well built

Cons: CPU heats up Sometimes if i have alot of programs Running at the same time

Other Thoughts: I don't normally write reviews but i will if a product warrants it.. I have had my nexus 7 for about 18 mo or a year and a half.. Since the day i got it it has been on all day and used all day between my wife and i and our kids.. The kids and I play games and i use it as a networking device to my home computer when we are out. I got a OTG adapter and use a mouse and keyboard with it also.. This tablet has literally been used 8-10hrs a day everyday without fail.. We have had 2 drops that were scary but no damage was done so it is durable to a point.. My battery is still working great and holding a charge as if it was new.. I recommend not using the tablet while charging instead charge fully while off at night and let it drain during the day..if and when it gets low before iam done using it i will shut it off and let it charge for an hour and your good to go.. The only issue i have had is if i have a lot of programs running the cpu gets hot My solution was to download a free program that just makes sure programs that were closed are not still using resources in the background.. This is a well built tablet with a stunning screen plex and netflix work extremely well.. I highly recommend this tablet and with a screen protector and battery maint.. This tablet will be very reliable for years.. I have read other reviews about an issue with this tablet not working after updating and I personally have installed all updates and have not had any issues... If you are looking for a well built tablet the nexus 7 2nd gen is well worth the price and in my opinion competes with tablets that are much more pricer

2 out of 5 eggsWorked great, then dead

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: Beautiful screen, no bloatware. Fast response and very portable.

Cons: Like many others, mine bricked shortly after the 5.0 update. This is well documented elsewhere online, despite Asus suggesting they are "isolated" issues. Asus support has me sending mine in for analysis, but a motherboard replacement costs more than the tablet itself. Of course it is just out of warranty, so I'm working with my credit card company to solve the issue.

Other Thoughts: Asus customer support line was very friendly. I've bought a lot of Asus computers and motherboards in the past, but the prevalence of this specific issue has soured me on the brand. I'm hoping Asus can get my tablet working again.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Scott,

I'm glad to know that you are satisfied with the beautiful screen, fast response and portability of the tablet. I apologize if the recent Android OS update was unsuccessful and made the tablet unbootable. Should you need further assistance regarding the tablet, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150626914 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat tablet...for a few months

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: does everything you would expect it to do, its fast, it plays games that cheap tablets wont

Cons: this is the second one ive had, first one lasted about 4 months then gave the 5 blinks of death... this one lasted only three months before giving the 5 blinks of death.

Other Thoughts: Asus has to know this is an issue yet they keep selling them without fixing the problem, im disgusted because this isnt a cheap tablet yet it may as well be

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I certainly understand your concern regarding the tablet failing to power on or bootup suddenly. If the failure occurred after an OS update, please try to do a hardware reset by disconnecting the AC adapter and let the battery drain for at least 24 hours, longer time will allow the current and clear the memory completely. After completing this process, reconnect the AC adapter and power on. You may need to try a different known good AC outlet or surge protector. We are aware of this issue with the tablet and in order to avoid the tablet from failing after an OS update, please verify if the tablet is within range to an established wireless router and internet service is working properly. If you need further technical assistance resolving this issue, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150479493 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

1 out of 5 eggs#NEXUS7BRICKED Useless with new update

This review is from: ASUS Google Nexus 7 FHD (2013) Android Tablet - 2GB RAM Quad-Core CPU 16GB Flash (Wi-Fi Only)

Pros: When it works: great screen, fast response, good wifi connectivity, light to hold.

Cons: Hundreds or thousands of Nexus 7s have been reported irretrievably bricked after the latest Android update. Asus treats it as nothing more than out-of-warranty motherboard failure and Google appears to have not responded at all.

Other Thoughts: Here is the narrative. The Nexus 7 2013 version has been working fine. A few weeks after the latest update, it displays the "Google" screen and does not go further into bootup, regardless of any actions taken.

The problem has been reported by numerous users on multiple product forums.

You can find reports of the complains by doing a search for "Nexus 7 locked on Google Screen."

The most likely explanation is that the newest OS update initiated a looping in the flash memory that eventually wears the memory out. This is consistent with the reports that the unit fails again a few weeks even after the motherboard has been replaced.

Asus customer support states they will charge between $100 - $300 if the product is out of warranty. Neither Asus nor Google has responded specifically to this very widespread problem.

Customers should be very wary of buying this product until the problem has been addressed and solved.

For the record, I got my unit at a different distributor and have had it two years before it bricked.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Ronald,

Thank you for the positive comment with the tablet. The tablet failing to bootup after an OS update are isolated cases related to an unsuccessful OS update. Normally, this can be resolved by disconnecting the AC adapter and let the unit drain for 24 hours to reset and clear the memory. After doing this, please reconnect your AC adapter then power on the unit. If the problem persists, please press and hold the power button, repeat this process a couple of times, until you see an ASUS logo or a battery icon. If a battery icon shows up, let the battery charge fully before turning it on again. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150440424 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.
