4 out of 5 eggsGreat "casual use" laptop

Pros: - thin, light, sturdy body
- Windows 7
- matte display

Cons: - older processor
- tons of bloatware

Other Thoughts: I've always liked the Zenbook format (it's a pretty blatant Macbook Air rip-off, but there's nothing wrong with ripping off a good thing), but didn't have enough need for a personal laptop to spend the money on a new one (even the cheaper models). I have a beef personal workstation, a company-issued laptop, a personal tablet and personal smartphone. A personal laptop was very much a "want" and not a "need".

But this puppy popped up on NewEgg, refurb for just a shade over $500. The internals are nothing special, and one could even consider them anemic if you need any kind of real performance. But I just need to browse, do some light productivity work, place graphics-light strategy games like TripleA and run HeroLab for my roleplaying game sessions. This laptop would do all of that and more, in an attractive, thin, light body and for a good price.

Having Windows 7 instead of Windows 8.x was a bonus. I don't have anything against Windows 8, but I haven't migrated yet. Having a laptop on the same OS as my personal and company computers is nice. The matte display was a good bonus too--again, I've accepted glossy displays as the new norm...but if I can get a matte display, I prefer it.

I wasn't that excited about the unimpressive 1366x768 display, but for my purposes and for this price it was an acceptable compromise. Much to my surprise, however, the model I received actually has a 1920x1080 panel in it! I have no idea if mine was a fluke or if the entire refurb batch on offer is like this, so please order assuming it's the 1366x768 panel and just be pleasantly surprised if you get the better one.

The biggest con so far was the metric ton of bloatware that ASUS installed on it. But that's nothing that can't be fixed by spending 45 minutes uninstalling stuff. Better yet, if you have an extra legit copy of your OS of choice (I don't happen to, at the moment) just reimage the thing and get it over with.

I've only had the thing for a few hours, but so far I'm impressed. It's light, thin, sturdy, looks great and so far is snappy enough for regular stuff. Haven't tried playing an actual 1080p video on it yet, but Netflix HD looks good.

Great deal, if you need the form factor and don't care much about the internals.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Sam,

I'm glad to know that you were impressed with the product and considered it a great "casusl use" laptop. I certainly understand your disappointment regarding some of the features of the unit. If you don't need some of the pre-installed software, please uninstall them in the Control Panel, Programs and Features. Should you need further assistance, please email me at and write down service# N140708435 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.
