5 out of 5 eggsGreat Tablet

Pros: Awesome tablet. Pretty fast, beautiful display. Huge upgrade over my HP touchpad running android.

The Tegra chip is pretty good, and I get about 8 hours of heavy use out of it. Perfect for the kids to play games on it, or watch Netflix.

Cons: * Fingerprint magnet. Get a cleaning cloth!
* When I first got the unit, I thought it was DoA. Charging light wouldn't turn on, and the power button did nothing.

However, I booted into the bootloader and tablet has worked with no problems after that.

1. Press & hold the Volume down button. While holding the Volume button(s), press & hold the Power button for at least 10 seconds until you see an Android robot and the word Start on the screen.

2. Press the Volume down button until Power off is highlighted. Press the Power button to select that option.

3. Disconnect the charger and reconnect it within 10 seconds. A battery icon should appear on your screen.

After restarting, the charging LED turned on and the tablet was able to power on normally.

Other Thoughts: Awesome power for the price. If you get lucky and get it on sale, you can get it for about $100 after MIR!

4 out of 5 eggsPerfect for what it is...Unfortunately made by ASUS

Pros: Beautiful - indistinguishable from new.
Price - very low for what you get
4.4.2 after OTA update
Easily unlocked / locked
Very custom ROM compatible.
Loud speakers

Tegra3 is a surprisingly good cpu/gpu that sips power.

CM11 + ART = Butter!

Cons: The USB cord is frighteningly short. You WILL want a longer one. It's so short, I almost considered deducting two eggs.

The micro USB port is mounted parallel to the plane of the screen, like almost every device now-a-days. Unfortunately, the device bezel cuts an inward 45 degree angle betwixt the parallel and perpendicular. This renders EVERY cord-device connection loose and insecure. Sadly, a proper mating cannot occur due to unnecessary obstruction. This is purely a design flaw and should never have passed User Acceptance Testing - but it did.

Speaker output is stronger (not better) than headphone output. Even with "safe headphone volume" off the volume is not as intense as seems from the speakers. (Slightly sub-audiophile caliber 'phones used for comparison.) The Realtek (RMC) ALC5642 processor is also quite power hungry, I recently discovered. At 50% volume, while charging from the wall, I LOST ~8% battery/hour.

Also, the resolution is a little weak by 1080p standards.

The 2013 model addresses these weaknesses, among others. If you have the extra $$$, get the 2013.

Other Thoughts: A note on ASUS and Price:
I would not have bought this for any other price than that which I did.

$250 is fair for the hardware, but too much for ASUS' you-touch-it-you-bought-it warranty. I bought this in hope that it's a "loss leader."

1 out of 5 eggsVery bad

Pros: None

Cons: The touch screen does not work. Avoid it at any cost.

Other Thoughts: After seeing this, I have forgotten to think.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize if you were dissatisfied with the tablet. I certainly understand your concern regarding the erratic touchscreen performance. Please try to do a hardware reset and do a system update after successfully restoring the system to factory settings. Also, please verify that third-party applications being installed are fully-Android compliant in order to avoid conflict that can possibly cause system stability issues. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3600021 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

2 out of 5 eggsWifi issues

Pros: I like the tablet size and form factor. Good build quality.

Cons: The device I received had issues with my network "not in range" although it was obviously. It would see every other network nearby and show them in range. I have about two dozen devices that regularly connect to my network without issue. I was able to temporarily get the device to connect by enabling broadcast SSID, disabling MAC filtering, using WPS etc. However the connection would be lost after rebooting etc.

Another issue I had with this device was that the Play Store wasn't included. I manually installed the app but it wouldn't load properly and would immediately exit. I suspect something was wrong with the Google Android device account etc. I also had no update utility installed on my device for jumping to 4.3. I wasn't going to go through the trouble of loading a new OS via image to see if it corrected these issues due to time constraints for the $50 rebate.

Other Thoughts: I possibly could have corrected the issues above through software updates and loading a newer version of Android via images. However, I shouldn't have to do that with a re-certified device. I would really have liked to have made it work but I only had a week to obtain the $50 rebate. This device is a good buy if you don't have the above issues. I took an RMA and an in-store credit for my return.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's great knowing that the tablet is of good build quality, size and form-factor. I do understand your concern regarding the issue with the WIFI device. The unit was fully-tested with no problem with the WIFI device, this is an isolated case. Please try to do a hardware reset and so a sytem update after a successful reset. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3600139 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Looks nice if it would turn on.

Cons: Item arrived DOA. No refunds, only replacement, which takes 7-10 business days to process. Doesn't speak well for reconditioning of these items.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for the positive comment with the tablet. I apologize if the system failed to power on upon arrival. All recertified or refurbished products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspection, this is an isolated case. Please verify if the USB cable and AC adapter are properly connected to from the tablet to a working surge protector or AC outlet. Please try to disconnect the AC adapter and let the unit drain for 24 hours to reset and clear the memory. After doing this, please reconnect your AC adapter then power on the unit. If the problem persists, please press and hold the power button, repeat this process a couple of times, until you see an ASUS logo or a battery icon. If a battery icon shows up, let the battery charge fully before turning it on again. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3593268 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggsthis is some kind of machine

Pros: $109!!!!!!
2012 version is tried and true.
Operation is "intuitively obvious."
Nexus 7 2012 is the testbed tablet for UBUNTU touch!!!

Cons: I would like a bit larger screen...perhaps....
A bit dated, especially when compaired to the 2013 version.

Other Thoughts: I use this tablet for run of the mill surfing and reading.

I also have an old athlon xp MB running with Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS and made note that this version of the Nexus 7 can be converted to Ubuntu OS; Although with the new Android/Ubuntu dual boot OS with/without docking station, I may leave it alone and try that in the near future.

This thing deserves better than 3 stars overall.

1 out of 5 eggsdon't recommend

Pros: when it works it is useful. When it works...

Cons: prone to numerous breakdowns, lousy warranty service.. prepare to be angry and frustrated if it breaks

Other Thoughts: I had to send mine for Asus warranty service 3 times in 1 year. Each time it takes between 2 and 3 weeks to get it back. You have to pay postage to get it to warranty center. When Asus sends it back you have to be home to sign for it. They don't keep their word about what they tell you they will do for warranty service over the phone. I was told by the Asus tech they would replace my unit on the third return, but they did not. My guess is Asus has lots of refurbished models to sell because they have thousands of units that needed repairs. I wouldn't take a chance on one of these because they may work for a short time and then break after warranty is up. The second warranty return I did, Asus sent it back to me saying nothing was wrong and it worked for about 3 weeks and totally died. A few days before my warranty was up they replaced the motherboard (3rd warranty return to Texas service center).

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for your dissatisfaction with the tablet and your recent negative customer service experience. We do value our customers and stand behind our products. 5 out of 5 eggsGreat tablet

Pros: Lower price for a Nexus with 32GB. I generally steer away from refurbished products because of bad experiences but I decided to try this one and have not been disappointed. It is the older 2012 version but is still a very nice tablet especially for $100.00. I had a little problem with it at first but I was able to resolve the issue (see cons).

Cons: The first thing after I turned it on was an offer from the Google play store to upgrade the Android system to 4.3 which I accepted. After attempting the upgrade the tablet crashed and said the update failed then would not reboot. After checking on the internet I downloaded the Android SDK and the v4.3 factory flash for the Nexus 7 2012 from Google. Using tools from the SDK via my desktop I was able to re-install the factory image and all was good. I was offered the upgrade to v4.4 and that went great. It is now running KitKat and that is working great. I don't know if this is really a "con" but for some it could be a problem.

Other Thoughts: I don't know why this crash happened but I don't think it had anything to do with this tablet because it has been working great ever since. Just an inherent danger in doing upgrades I guess.

1 out of 5 eggsWrong Unit - check your storage

Pros: The machine is not at fault, It was everything I could asked for.

Cons: expected 32gb model
got 16gb model.

Other Thoughts: I bought this item on a special detail a few days ago. I just received the item a day ago. I expect to get the 32gb model but i got a 16gb model instead. I am unable to get a replacement because i already mailed in my upc code for the rebate.

To other people that also bought this during the deal. Check to make sure they didn't mail you the wrong model. Check your storage, if you have 13.24gb you have the 16gb model. If you have 27gb you have the 32gb model.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. Since this is a sales related issue, I advice that you contact Newegg to resolve this issue. Should you need assistance with the product, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3564971 on the subject line.
