1 out of 5 eggsExtremely disappointed, mostly with newegg

Pros: The tablet itself is good when it works. No SD slot, but had enough internal storage to overcome that.

Cons: Where do I begin. I bought this refurbished primarily because it had a $50 rebate for a good tablet. I got it and it did not charge. I returned it and received the next one rooted so I could not add any standard accounts. I returned it again and finally got a working one. However because of the delay I was unable to get the rebate and newegg would not work with me on this saying the rebate was not offered by newegg. They even stopped responding to emails. On top of that the tablet is more constant restating even after resetting to factory default. That might be a known issue with the device and hopefully Google will be more accommodating. Either way this experience is extremely disappointed given their reputation and I would not trust them going further.

4 out of 5 eggsLove it!

Pros: This thing is great. Updates without issue. Currently running 4.4 I think. I know it upgraded past 4.2 with ease. Pretty sure it runs 4.4 currently.

Runs games without issue. Connectivity is good, touchscreen is responsive. I can see why these are popular tablets.

Cons: Docked an egg because it came with the 'Refurbisher/Developer' OS installed. It did not have a current consumer version of Android installed when I received it. No Google play or any other 'standard' apps were installed. Had a bunch of testing software apps.

Other Thoughts: Did a little research when I got it and loaded a stock image of 4.0 on the tablet, then let the system upgrade itself. Took me a little while as I was not familiar with doing anything like that before. Was not too difficult once I figured it out. Still should have been checked before it left the facilities to make sure it had a full working version of Android available.

Has been an amazing tablet since then.

4 out of 5 eggsHad mine for 15 months no issues

Pros: Fast, WYSIWYG, cheap ( got this from NewEgg last fall for $170.

I rooted mine so didn't bother with the 4.42 upgrade that just was offered. I got a dock for it a few months later for $20. It's great for Netflix, Wifi, Reading Ebooks, GPS, the Gen 2 is much better but if I were to go for that, I'd buy the Galaxy 4 pad. For $100 this is a great buy if it works. I wouldn't do the Android upgrade. Rooted it's a lot more fun with all the ROMS but I'd wait for the warranty period to end unless you know how to unroot the device.

Cons: NO camera..why a front camera except maybe for Skyping which I don't do. I wish there was a bit more memory but that's what clouds are for.

Other Thoughts: I kind of wish I'd waited for the Gen 2 to come out. I found one last Christmas some drunk dropped it I believe but was able to find the owner and get it back to them. I saw how much better the gen 2 was....especially graphically plus they added the camera I had wanted.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst of the worst

Pros: Cheap

Cons: I bought a nexus 7 FHD last year, had no problem with it. When this first generation nexus was on sale, I bought one for my kid. When it arrived, I was confused by the OS, it was not the same OS as my nexus FHD. I googled and find it was flashed with a custom ROM which is for nexus phone! Since I consider myself to be somewhat good at DIY, I flashed the officeal OS myself. It is a easy job. But this is an indication that those refurbished ones were not refurbished the way the should be. BAD quality control!!

Recently, I had a look on the refurbished one, I noticed a system message, saying an update is available. I then did the update. After installation, it can't bootup any more.

I sent out for RMA, they charged me $200 to have it repaired. YES, TWO HUNDREDs for a tablet damaged by official over the air update!

Other Thoughts: If you google it, a lot of the first generation Nexus 7 had this problem. Don't buy it!

4 out of 5 eggsGood Product for Great Price

Pros: I went ahead and bought one for my Dad for his birthday and he loves it. As an older guy, he enjoys the simplicity of the interface and mainly uses it for Facebook and Youtube. The bright screen is also perfect for him as he has some trouble with his vision and the clarity of the screen definitely helps.

Cons: Battery life can be kinda hit or miss. It seems to only last a few hours before he has to charge it again.

Other Thoughts: Makes for a great gift!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat starter Android tablet

Pros: Mine came without any physical blemish. Battery runs long. Very nice bright display. Just feels nice in the hand. Runs all the latest software.

Cons: Can be a little sluggish under the latest OS. Only really noticeable when starting apps.

Other Thoughts: Great price (when I bought it) for a starter Android device.

1 out of 5 eggsBoth units received were bad.

Pros: Comes with return packaging.

Cons: 1st unit would not charge and came with what looked like test software.

2nd unit DOA. Does not turn on. Tried charging it with known good charger and pressed power button fully for 5 seconds.

Other Thoughts: I am very disappointed in the units I have received.

The first unit did not charge using multiple chargers, two of which are known good. This unit also looked like it came with testing software. I could not set up my device like new android devices and a factory reset did not help. It did not even come with the play store to install apps.

The second unit is dead on arrival. I have also tried charging it with multiple cords, two of which are known working, and item does not show any signs of life.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Matt,

I apologize if you both unit that you have received didn't work properly. All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections, these are isolated cases. 1 out of 5 eggsDisaster

Pros: The shipping container is reusable, which comes in handy when you have to RMA it.

Cons: It has been two months now since I purchased this, and I have yet to have an actual working product in my hands. I've had the same issues with it from the beginning - the unit would reboot at any given time, no real forewarning, just total system reboot - or it would lock solid, emit a buzzing from the speaker, lines of static would flicker across the screen, and then it would reboot.

Put in a RMA the first time - sent it across the country at my expense to get repaired. Amazingly fast turnaround, it's back in my hands in no time.

Doing the exact same thing it did when I sent it out.

Second time - took video of it for documentation sake to show them it hadn't been repaired, sent it back in for another RMA. Now my unit has been AWOL for a month, been over a week now since I was last assured it was being worked on "immediately" and it would be "express shipped back to me." (Last check, their ticket system just magically found my unit 3 weeks after I mailed it in and it still hasn't been worked on.)

So in the last two months I've used the unit a collective 30 minutes, have paid to ship it to their repair facility in Texas twice, still don't have a working product, have been assured it was being repaired and now it appears that isn't the case - RMA system claims they received the unit 6/4 when I mailed it back to them 5/9.

5/20 I expressed my concerns about their RMA system not tracking my unit. They said it was @ the repair facility and in line for repair.

5/28 I again expressed my concerns about no tracking, and no unit. They again said it was @ the repair facility and they would be working on it 'today' and have it express shipped back to me.

6/4 I again expressed my concerns about no tracking - now the unit shows up in their RMA system and says it has not been worked on. Have yet to hear back from anyone @ asus about what is happening.

6/6 - today. At this point wishing I had never made this mistake.

Other Thoughts: I've been a asus user since 1997, and to their credit this is the first time I've ever had to RMA anything of theirs. That being said, this single experience has left such a horrid effect on me that I'm considering never purchasing from them again.
