1 out of 5 eggsGreat prospect, horrible execution

Pros: - Instant on works great
- Looks nice, slim

Cons: - Finicky charging, doesn't recognize charger upon plugin and won't charge. Needs a restart or two with charger plugged in before it takes to charge
- Horrible space bar, doesn't register presses unless pressed very hard directly in the middle, making typing awkward and clumsy
- Cheap, oddly placed touch-pad. Pad buttons blending into pad incredibly awkward and leads to many misclicks
- Shipped with a few dead pixels

Other Thoughts: Many negative reviews due to it having WIndows 8, which is ridiculous - the OS is not at all bad or that different than 7. Having read the reviews and seeing that the largest complaint was the operating system, I figured I'd give it a go. Huge regret. I am disappointed in ASUS.

2 out of 5 eggsNot satisfied with this purchase at all

Pros: It is indeed a laptop

Cons: Many problems
- Dead Pixels on monitor
- spacebar is very finickky - has to be mashed in the middle to register press, no one in their right mind would be able to type on this thing.

Cannot return/refund because I bought 30 days ago, shame as it was a Christmas present

1 out of 5 eggsBought Two of these

Pros: I bought two of the for $250 each. They seem relatively well built, and are perfectly fine for office/school work and web browsing.

Cons: Both of these units are suffering from the same issue. When plugged into the wall to charge, the mouse pad is barely-functional. It's jittery and sporadic. When not plugged in it worked fine.

I'm working with ASUS to see if we can resolve the issue.

1 out of 5 eggsLost Package

Pros: None - Newegg is unresponsive. I've been trying to track my package but Newegg and Laserhip does not response. Either Newegg or LaserShip has contacted me regarding my laptop. My $250 has been wasted. I don't know what else to do.

Cons: Newegg Customer Service

4 out of 5 eggsGreat value

Pros: Beautiful design, very light, well lit screen.

Cons: Space bar does not register on right 1/3rd all of the time, only comes with Windows 8.

Other Thoughts: Since this is a refurbish I am ok with the space bar, I'll get used to hitting it slightly to the left of where I am used to hitting it. Windows 8 is utter garbage. I knew that going in and actually purchased it with the intent of installing KUbuntu 13.10 ASAP. The install of which was breeze and I am now using a wonderful Linux laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsAsus x501 white

Pros: The laptop is beautiful. the cover is plastic and dotted with silver squares that from a distance make it appear aluminum or white depending on the lighting. It is smooth to the touch with no textured feel. They keyboard at first felt light weight and cheap but after some use I really like it, i can type better on it than most chicklet style keyboards on other laptops. So big plus there. I bought the refurbished version for 274. It came packed well but with no asus box or paperwork, however thats expected for a refurb. The laptop feels like the value is much better than the price I paid. Quality. I don't know much about speed and gaming yet as it just arrived but it seems quick, vibrant color, slim design, and comfortable keyboard I cant complain.

Cons: I've only had the laptop for a day but I may send it back happily for a replacement. This ones touch pad works great (I like the keyboard and touch pad better than my wives $800 costco sold HP). The reason I'm contemplating sending it back is because the touch pad is slightly raised on one side. Its sort of annoying and just catches your attention. It still works fine its purely my OCD cosmetic side that wants it to sit flat and flush. Windows 8 is somewhat annoying but i plan on downloading windows 8.1 and a shell to make it look and feel like windows 7.

Other Thoughts: If your like me and debating this purchase for days, watching youtube videos and reading reviews from newegg, amazoXn and best buy dive in! with the iron Egg eligibility extended to jan 31 for the holidays there is nothing to fear and its an excellent machine for casual use.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome Deal on a good laptop

Pros: First impressions are of a lightweight, stylish laptop. I love the way it looks. It's so much faster than my old one, but given that that one was from 2007, that's not hard to do.

The touch pad is very sensitive and takes a little bit of getting used to. I'm finding that it interacts with Windows 8 fairly well, though the operation system is quite clunky without a touch screen. I like that it comes with a webcam installed. I do a lot of video conferencing and was having difficulties with my old laptop set up.

I mostly do office work and surf the internet with my computer. I don't play games or use programs that need a heavy duty processor. For my purposes, this is a great laptop. The price is pretty unbeatable. There were some concerns in the previous reviews that the package included the wrong charging cable, but I did not experience this issue. It comes out of the box ready to go.

Cons: I have two problems with this laptop. The first is that I didn't notice from the specs that it did not include a disc drive. This is totally my fault, but I'm pointing it out here so that you will be aware of this too. I only use the drive to watch movies, so this isn't the end of the world. However, I did purchase an external drive for about $30 on this site.

Second, Windows 8 is annoying. It is clearly made for touch screen computers and tablets and is just so awkward to interact with on non-touch screen device. The touch pad on this computer is quite sensitive and does alright with the OS. I'm sure I will eventually get used to it, but it's never going to be great.

Other Thoughts: For the money, I think this is a great purchase. I just need a simple laptop that surfs the net and can handle office programs, which this does nicely.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed

Pros: Thin, white.

Cons: Won't boot.

Other Thoughts: It seems like it'd be a nice enough laptop, if it worked. Right out of the box getting it to start was hit or miss. You press the power button, some lights you can't normally see flash, a fan you can't hear starts up, and then nothing - the screen is blank, until windows login appears, which takes a bit, if you're lucky. If you hit the power button again, thinking you didn't press hard enough, it powers off.
After a month, it simply won't boot at all. Power comes on, but there is no HDD activity and nothing ever shows on the screen. Could be a bad drive, who knows.
Finally, ASUS customer service is really bad. To start to get help you have to fill out a web form to start a case number. That form barely functions. Once I submitted it, they displayed an empty page. No email with a case number, no case number on the final page, nothing. Now I'm trying to get help via online chat, and needless to say I'm just sitting here with "One of our Support Representatives will be with you shortly. Thank you for your patience." on the screen.
I've bought refurb products before, and never had a problem. Until now.
P.S. The space bar is problematic, as mentioned in another review. This laptop is for my young son, though, so it isn't a problem for us, but it might be for you.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you that you've found the laptop thin and white. I'm sorry if the unit failed to bootup. If it doesn't bootup in WINDOWS normally, please try to reset the system to factory settings if you have created an image or backup of the system using an external USB drive. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3124102 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

Rodel

4 out of 5 eggsThe Price Is Right.

Pros: I've had this laptop for quite a while now and it hasn't disappointed me yet. It handles everything I want it to do.
It can handle various games well, such as minecraft, or even TF2. Though I wouldn't recommend trying to play anything to high in graphics like Crysis 2 or anything.

Priced good for what you get.

Cons: Doesn't have an optical drive, but I knew that when I bought it.
Doesn't have as many ports as I would like to have, but I already knew that too.

Also, The keyboard is not exactly a quiet keyboard, its actually quite loud. Also a regular mouse pad and buttons would be better, but what it comes with is still pretty good.

Other Thoughts: If the speakers were on top instead of on bottom, that would be great.
