4 out of 5 eggsAmazing with only 1 problem

Pros: Resolution : 1920x1080
Graphics Card: 760M (Can Run League of Legends everything maxed out at 60 fps, skyrim on high with some graphic enhancing mods at ~35fps)
CPU: i7
RAM: 12GB
Also very slick nice build, really like the light up keyboard, pretty good battery life(about 5 hours when not gaming maybe 6)

Cons: I only have 1 major problem with this laptop. And it is disappointing to know that companies, even ASUS, will throw a 5400 RPM hard drive on at $1200 laptop. It's really the only thing that made me think twice about purchasing it. I will be replacing it eventually to either a 2tb HDD or 512 SSD, but it's the fact that I have to do it myself and it doesn't have at least a 7200RPM HDD when it comes to me brand new.

Other Thoughts: Overall great laptop, only complaint is the hard drive. ASUS did a good job with this one.

5 out of 5 eggsCant beat it for the price

Pros: 1080p resolution
Dedicated graphics
1tb of storage
One of the fastest Intel processor families
12gb of memory

Lots of great specs and plays all the games I want (blizzard games) with no issues and on full graphic settings.

Cons: The only downfall this laptop has is the 5400rpm hard disk drive, it really slows down the loading of programs, web, and windows explorer. Replacing the drive with a SSDHD or SSD will greatly improve the speed and performance of this computer.

Other Thoughts: Overall a great buy for the money, even if you replace the hard drive with a SSDHD it's still cheaper than any other pc that is even close in specs.

5 out of 5 eggsPretty good!

Pros: - Looks nice
- Well-constructed
- Great game performance
- AMAZING sound. I don't even use my external Labtec speakers + subwoofer anymore. I decided to get off my rear end and write this review simply because I am so impressed with the sound quality.
- Backlit keyboard
- Fast.
- Nice viewing angles and anti-glare screen.

Cons: - Windows 8. However, I've gotten used to Windows 8 and don't really hate it any more. A few settings can drastically improve your Windows 8 experience:
- Had to do the whole video driver re-installation after upgrading to Windows 8.1 thing. It was pretty simple.
- I guess it's a little heavy, but it's only because of the all-metal construction. It fell off my couch 2 feet onto a wooden floor and suffered absolutely no damage.

Other Thoughts: I deliberated over many laptops in the less-than-$1000 range and sprang just a few extra bucks (was on sale for $1009) for this one. I made the correct decision. This is so far my favorite laptop I have ever owned, despite Windows 8. I'm just too lazy to try to put Windows 7 on it.

Games that I've played so far perform well - Source engine games (HL2, TF2) and Serious Sam 3 at >60 fps on completely maxed-out settings. Max Payne 3 at completely maxed out settings plays smooth as butter without as much as a hiccup.

If this laptop is at the top of your budget range or just a little bit over, just get it. It's a winner.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Bad

Pros: With the exception of the hard drive, you get decent hardware for the price.

Cons: Minus 1 egg for the HDD and minus 1 egg for the screen, not to mention Windows 8.

HDD: Hard drive is too slow to keep.
Screen: Could not get used to the blurriness.
Windows 8: Simply doesn't like you doing anything your way. It wants to control everything you do.

Other Thoughts: I upgraded it with a SSD and it improved immensely. My main fault after the hard drive is the screen. Many others said they liked the screen, but I could not get used to the blurriness. It may be due to the anti-glare coating, but I simply could not get used to it. I ended up giving the laptop to a family member.
It upgraded to Windows 8.1 fairly easily, but I found no real advantage, as both are not designed for non-touch use.
Bottom line: If you like the screen (and some reviewers do) and you enjoy Microsoft manipulating your life with Win 8, then all you need to do is replace the HDD and you have a decent laptop for the price. I plan on looking for something else.

4 out of 5 eggsAMAZING for the price.

Pros: Very very good specs. The i7 processor is amazing, the 760m graphics is amazing, I have NOT ONCE lagged playing any games or videos or running any large programs (like photoshop) which is a definite upgrade from my previous laptop.

You'll probably make fun of me, but I have The sims 3 with 3 extra expansion packs and over 4gb of custom content.... it's STILL the fastest loading that I've ever had on a laptop; about 30-45 seconds from inital start, to loading my specific save. I used to be able to go to the bathroom, make food, etc. and still my game wouldn't load before. It's obviously made a significant difference.
Also, I load everything in the highest quality possible (& at 60fps) and nothing has ever lagged. Ever. It's wonderful.

The backlit keyboard is very bright at it's highest setting, and more than enough to help that late-night typing (Or in my case, dim classroom) without straining your eyes.

The casing itself is very, VERY nice. It's plastic on the bottom and around the screen, but the back is a nice brushed metal (light up logo!!) and the interior is a smooth and sleek silver. I adore the design by the speakers, it's very well painted and it looks like all the dots extending out are part of the speaker dots.
Overall it's a very wonderful design.

The last thing I'll rave about is the KEYBOARD. The feel of the keys is very very nice. They don't stick at all, don't click too much to be annoying, and the plastic keys have a really nice and velvety(? best way i could word it) texture that I love.

Cons: This laptop is not without it's faults (though, they're minor)

It does tend to run hot when you're pushing it with high settings on games. Not hot enough to cause burns like some, but after about two or so hours it starts to spread the heat from just the side, toward the left side of the keyboard.
It's not that much of a concern, though; you can give it a 5 to 10 minute break and then it cools down back to normal with no problem.

They right number pad bothers me BECAUSE of where the zero key is placed. The directional buttons are shifted ever-so slightly to the right that the right key pushes the zero key over from the bottom left of the pad (where it's supposed to be) to the middle. It's only one space change, but considering that I work retail and I'm very used to where the keys are positioned traditionally...it's just an issue for me.

Other than that... windows 8(& 8.1) DOES hinder the laptop. When you update to 8.1 you WILL have to find out where to find the driver information for your graphics card because you need the most recent version and they will make no attempt to contact you for it. I was lucky and one of my friends was looking up things for this laptop, since he wants it too, and was able to find the driver files for me...but you will need some hunting.

Windows 8 over all was just horrible. It took me 3 hours to perform the first 70 updates, and then an additional 6 hours JUST TO UPDATE to windows 8.1 (of course for everything to break after because of dumb drivers) and overall... I'm wishing for windows 7 again.
It's not even the silly application interface, I actually like the design, but I've run into so many problems with compatibility that the design doesn't make it better for me. Just, be wary.

Last little tidbit... FINGERPRINTS ON THE BACK. It gets really bad, but the cleaning cloth that's supplied helps.

Other Thoughts: Overall...I love this laptop. I was very skeptical at first because, hey, I'm a broke college kid and $1,000 is a lot of money....but I'd spend it again in a heartbeat.

Please don't be skeptical about ordering, it's a really great buy!

1 out of 5 eggsDefective Laptop

Pros: It physically looks great!

Cons: Defective and sent it back already. Hopefully, Newegg will replace it with a good one that will work. It was for my son's birthday gift, and he took it very well when I said it had to go back.

Other Thoughts: I really did not want a laptop with a Dvd player. Just another thing that could eventually stop working in time.... I rather use a external dvd player.

3 out of 5 eggsFirst Laptop RMA - for the subwoofer...

Pros: Fast, powerful hardware. good audio, nice style, feels well built.

Newegg customer service is top notch.

Cons: The subwoofer that came with the laptop didn't work. I contacted Asus directly and they wanted me to pay for the shipping to repair/replace the part, assuming it was the subwoofer itself, for a manufacturer issue on a laptop I got today.

Other Thoughts: I contacted newegg and am now in the process of an RMA to get a whole new laptop, because of a malfunctioning subwoofer of all things. It seems that newegg customer service saves the day when Asus customer service was nothing but terrible: transferred me without request or warning, refused to explain, tech support was all of "Are you using an audio plug or USB cable?" (The laptop has a built in audio port for the subwoofer.)

I will update when I get the RMA.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jared,

Thank you for the positive comment. I certainly understand your disappointment with ASUS warranty policy. Yes, ASUS warranty covers hardware repair only. Normally, the replacement will be handled by our authorized dealers or resellers. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3564266 on the subject line.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy

Pros: It's ok, very pretty to look at.

Cons: They do not fix the notebooks unless you pay and ship them to them. I have a DvD player that I notice was dented. No place near me where I can get a box and ship the laptop. Also, you shipping it can cause more damage if you don't have it boxed up well.

I am noticing all of the cheaper laptops look like a great deals. Dell seems to be the way to go 100%. If you have a problem you have techs that will come and help you. They will even ship you the boxes to send them back.

Other Thoughts: I can't believe I wasted 1000 dollars on a notebook online I can't get fixed. I ordered it online because I couldn't get to any places to get one. They really need to tell if you have to repair if you have to ship it yourself and pay for it. I looked online well for this information and could not find it.

Very sad I had to find out after I got the notebook that this is how it works. Do not waste your money getting extra coverage when you have to pay to ship it back to be fixed and not even get a box to send it back in thats stable.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Terri,

Thank you for the positive comment. I apologize if you are not satisfied with our warranty policy. As far as customer service quality, we are rated one of the best if not number one in the business. 3 out of 5 eggsIf you're not tech savvy...

Pros: The price is great for the amount of quality hardware in this machine. The GPU runs like a beast... when you can get it to work.

Cons: If you're not tech savvy you're going to have a bad time. There is a huge problem with the N56JR that ASUS refuses to address. If you aren't up to date on your computer lingo you won't really know know what I'm talking about. I'll try to describe it the best way I can for everyone to understand. The way a motherboard talks to certain pieces of hardware attached to it is through software called drivers. Drivers need to be up to date all the time for your machine to run as quickly and efficiently as possible. This machine ships out with a very respectable graphics card (or GPU). The chipset manufacturer (Nvidia) comes out with drivers for the 760M ALLLLLL the time. However, the Nvidia drivers will not detect the graphics card. ASUS (like many other companies) adapt the GPU to their own standards. ASUS hasn't come out with a driver since the 311.XX series. Nvidia has already released up to a 335.XX series of drivers. Normally this wouldn't actually be a problem. Running hardware on an old driver doesn't mean it won't work. It just means that it won't run as well as it could. The real problem is that for some reason Windows 8 refuses to use the GPU to play games, watching videos, editing, and all that happy jazz. Instead, Windows 8 will only use the Integrated Intel HD 4000 Graphics accelerator. This is a HUGE problem since that GPU that causes this laptop to cost so much more than one without a dedicate GPU is just sitting inside your frame rotting away. I had to upgrade my BIOS, completely wipe away all of the software attached to the card from the factory, reroll the driver, and finally update to a 335.XX series driver. And the kicker... the 335.XX driver isn't even from ASUS! It's a user adapted driver taken from the Nvidia release. I'm not a tech guru, but I build my own computers for friends and myself in my spare time so I know my way around some of this stuff. It took me QUITE a long time to figure all of this because of the scarcity of information about the problems with the N56JR on the internet. Good luck if you buy this laptop. It took me hours and hours to get the GPU to work.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear C. Simmering,

I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. I certainly understand your concern regarding the system needing a BIOS update in order for the graphics controller to work properly. It is also recommended to install all recommended WINDOWS Update and upgrade to WINDOWS 8.1 in order to improve system performance and stability. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3564434 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Very well designed laptop; solidly built chassis with a great keyboard and a decent touchpad.

Cons: Mine shipped with a faulty GPU. Looking in device manager I saw a yellow triangle with an exclamation point on the NVIDIA GTX 760M device; opening the device properties showed windows stopped the device with an error 43.

Doing a search online showed several other users with the same issue on this particular laptop. I called ASUS technical support who confirmed the laptop had a faulty GPU.

Other Thoughts: It was probably luck (or lack thereof) of the draw that I got a faulty laptop. It's still a well built laptop with decent specs. ASUS technical support was also very supportive and helpful in helping me verify the issue.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's good to know that you like the well-designed laptop with solidly built chassis, great keyboard and a decent touchpad. I do understand your concern regarding the yellow marking on the graphics controller. Please try to update the VGA driver or do a System Restore in order to revert the system to the last known good configuration. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3564533 on the subject line.
