2 out of 5 eggsThe Integrated graphics became a nightmare

Pros: By all intent, this is a good laptop. There were only minor hiccups when I upgraded all the drivers--and the specs are amazing for the price.

It's a good build too, very well-designed.

Cons: By far the biggest reason I got this laptop was I needed something portable that had good memory and gpu for autodesk maya and other 3-d software. I assumed that if a notebook could handle games, it could probably handle 3-d environments in maya. I was wrong to assume.

And the thing is--the laptop probably could handle maya, but I'll never find out because no matter what I did, it would not run with the Nvidia gtx 760m gpu because it doesn't recognize it. This laptop runs udk beautifully, so it's definitely not a problem with the actual geforce gpu.

This wouldn't have been that much of a problem if it wasn't for all the graphical glitches that kept on happening until the problem became unbearable. Things would start flashing and suddenly options wouldn't work or the driver would crash and I would lose all my work--the intel gpu isn't meant to run 3-d stuff.

Going into the NVIDIA control panel and manually choosing to make maya run with the nvidia gpu didn't work. right clicking and choosing the graphics card also made zero difference.

It became evident that if I wanted to get anywhere, I would need to turn off the nvidia optimus services altogether.

There have been other people who had similar problems and after looking around on forums, it turned out that I would need to go into the bios and manually turn it off. No biggie. I updated my bios and checked for driver updated one more time before going into the bios only to realize that my aptio bios setup has no disable optimus option.

In fact, it's quite possible that this laptop is manufactured in such a way that it's impossible to manually turn off the integrated graphics. THIS IS A HUGE DEAL. I highly recommend people to stay way from this laptop if they need assurance that the nvidia gtx card will be used.

I finally went to customer service and they confirmed that indeed, it's not possible to turn off optimus.

Aaaaaaaaaaannnnd there's the sound of over 1000 dollars being flushed down the toilet. The NVIDIA graphics card is this laptop's biggest draw for me, and without access to it for my work, this laptop is pretty much a worthless lump of coal to me. A well-designed lump of coal, but that doesn't get me anywhere.

I'm going to try a few more things, but I'm not optimistic. If nothing helps there's nothing more I can do but return this laptop.

Other Thoughts: I'm very disappointed in this entire experience, but I"m still a fan of ASUS. I made a bad assumption on my part, and didn't even know about the integrated graphics thing until it was too late.

This is a huge problem that a lot of people have been having with all notebooks that use the Nvidia optimus switcher, and it's a laptop-breaking one for me, since I can't shut it off manually in my bios.

In the end, I simply didn't do enough research and got hoodwinked because of it. Careful getting this laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Notebook

Pros: - Extremely good build quality
- It is certainly not overpriced (build quality factors into the price)
- Awesome Screen (1920x1080, vibrant colors, wide horizontal viewing angle.
- Great Keyboard (it's also backlit)
- Touchpad is as good as I've ever seen. I still prefer the touchpads with two separate buttons for l and r click.
- Thin enough. It's about as thin as your average laptop
- Runs almost any game on high 40 - 50 fps
- Speakers are awesome, even without the mini subwoofer.

Cons: - Vertical viewing angle isn't great, but the screen can tilt so. . .
- A bit heavy (as expected due to hardware)
- Bigger-than-average power adapter but not worth docking an egg for
- Battery life is below average (4-4.5 hours light use) Don't even try gaming on battery (1-1.5 hours)

Other Thoughts: I just want to say that this notebook is awesome. I understand that this was originally dubbed a multimedia laptop, and now they call it a gaming laptop, but this is the perfect design for a gaming laptop. It's not obnoxiously large or colorful. Asus, I don't know if this is possible, but if you can put a gtx 780m in here, a second spot for a storage drive, and a blu ray drive, it would be the perfect laptop. Personally, I removed the optical drive and replaced it with an HDD caddy, and bought an SSD, to which I cloned the OS.

1 out of 5 eggstwo defective units

Pros: Great looking machine with fantastic specs at a great price.

Cons: First unit had 8 non-working keys on the key board. Called NewEgg for an RMA and sent it back for a replacement. Second unit worked good for a day then the screen went black. Did not show the ASUS splash screen on BIOS boot. It was a hardware issue. Returned second unit for a refund. I'll buy something else.

1 out of 5 eggsgraphics driver warning!!!!

Pros: it's a computer

Cons: If you are planning on using the GPU included with this laptop, be prepared for major headaches. This laptop does not support the NVIDIA drivers depending on the OS you install. I use CUDA for development and many of my programs, and what I have bought is an expensive paperweight. Good luck to any purchasers of this laptop series, don't waste time with ASUS support. Go straight to the NVIDIA forums and good hunting....

4 out of 5 eggsVery Good laptop

Pros: The screen is very nice at 1080p
Fast boot up, even without a SSD
Plays my games at high graphical settings(Star Wars The Old Republic being my most demanding game)
Very nice keyboard with good back lighting
Feels well built and is good looking

Cons: Gets hot when playing the Star Wars game at highest settings(CPU 92 Celsius max, GPU 82 Celsius max)
Windows 8 is vastly different from previous Windows(at first)
Battery life is not very long when gaming or streaming video

Other Thoughts: I really like this laptop. It has some cons but not a lot. Fixed the Windows 8 setup with Classic Shell so it is like Windows 7 desktop, but took a while to get things how I liked it. The battery life can be issue depending on if I am near an outlet or not, but I still don't like having to carry the batter anywhere I plan on playing games or watching streaming video for long durations.

The heat is my only real concern though. I use it on a hard flat surface and still get the above temperatures. I have ordered two laptop coolers, returning first one because it didn't help at all. Hopefully that will cure the heat issues. However, the heat issue is more that I am concerned about how long the laptop will last. It is not causing any system issues and is under the threshold for the CPU and graphics card.

Everything else is good. The picture is excellent quality, it plays all the games I use at the highest settings, is fast both booting up and when doing all other activities. The HDMI output is nice, as are the 4 USB ports. Lastly, the WIFI on it is superb. I get excellent connections both at hotels and home. Actually faster than my desktop which is connected by ethernet cable.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome Value for an awesome laptop!

Pros: 12 GB RAM
4700HQ i7 CPU (2.40GHz)
1920 x 1080 Full HD Resolution
2GB dedicated Nvidia Graphics card
Backlit Keyboard
Great Build Quality
Great sound Quality with supplied subwoofer

I shopped for months for a great laptop value. Knowing that new models are coming out soon, I decided to take advantage of an older premium laptop than waiting on a more expensive new kid on the block. My last laptop was an Asus and my wife and I both have Transformer tablets so there was no other brand for me to shop for. Could not be happier with this decision

Cons: Supplied 1TB 5400rpm HDD
Lack of Touch Screen
DVD rather than BluRay player
Dealing with administrative rights in Windows 8

Other Thoughts: Only turned on the unit and registered it with the supplied hard drive. I bought a Samsung 840 EVO 500GB SSD along with the laptop (also from Newegg) and immediately swapped it out. Samsung's supplied Data Migration software cloned the drive just fine, but did not clone the Asus Recovery portion of the HDD. Windows Disk Mamagement and Macrium Reflect allowed me to clone that portion so the SSD is now perfect. Did my Windows 8 updates, then updated to Windows 8.1 and now this sucker flies! From powering up to the main screen for logging in is less than 10 secs! With Windows 8 and my use of a tablet and smartphone, I had a little buyer's remorse before receiving it that I may have erred by not getting a touch screen and I almost called and cancelled my order, but I'm glad I didn't. The ease of the 10 point touchpad made me forget about the lack of a touch screen, especially since Windows 8.1 makes it easy to get to a familiar desktop screen.

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing with only 1 problem

Pros: Resolution : 1920x1080
Graphics Card: 760M (Can Run League of Legends everything maxed out at 60 fps, skyrim on high with some graphic enhancing mods at ~35fps)
CPU: i7
Also very slick nice build, really like the light up keyboard, pretty good battery life(about 5 hours when not gaming maybe 6)

Cons: I only have 1 major problem with this laptop. And it is disappointing to know that companies, even ASUS, will throw a 5400 RPM hard drive on at $1200 laptop. It's really the only thing that made me think twice about purchasing it. I will be replacing it eventually to either a 2tb HDD or 512 SSD, but it's the fact that I have to do it myself and it doesn't have at least a 7200RPM HDD when it comes to me brand new.

Other Thoughts: Overall great laptop, only complaint is the hard drive. ASUS did a good job with this one.
