2 out of 5 eggsNot recommended

Pros: Bright screen
Good battery life
Compact charger

Cons: Flimsy keyboard
Poorly manufactured trackpad
No cap lock light

Other Thoughts: I bought this notebook based on its features and generally positive reviews. After using it for about two month I now regret this purchase. The keyboard is flimsy, the middle section literally moves up & down as you type, and I just can't get comfortable typing on this machine. There's no cap lock light which is a small but annoying omission. UPDATE: actually there is a caps lock light, at the edge, about the size of a grain of sand. The trackpad sticks in the down position if you press too hard and the response is somewhat erratic. Two-finger scrolling is jerky, the deceleration is poorly implemented and unnatural, barely usable. Turning off most of the gestures seemed to help.

On the plus side, the screen is bright and sharp, although when vertically scrolling the image degrades, something weird is happening with the display driver. It boots and charges fast, and the battery life is impressive.

1 out of 5 eggsRIP ASUS S500CA

Pros: Touch screen, decent price (when i bought it just a year ago)

Cons: 12 months, and one week after purchase, this computer will not get past POST. Will only boot to BIOS, lost hundreds of gb's of data, went to request RMA, guess what, that extra week I used it after the year was up was too long to return. Cant get windows 7, 8 or 8.1 to successfully load AT ALL.

Other Thoughts: I've shopped at this website my entire computer career, probably as long as they've been a website and this is the first time ever that I'm severely disappointed with a product.

1 out of 5 eggsworst service ever

Pros: When it works it is fast and great. Up dated to 8.1 and I like this much better than 8.0. The I7 is super fast.

Cons: This been to asus for repairs 3 times so far. First HDD failed. with out unit for 2.5 weeks. Used it for 2 weeks then touch screen went inop. They had it a bit more than a month and claimed panel replaced. Then 2 weeks later touch was still inop and also acted like being touched when no one near the device. They had it for 2 months offered a outdated replacement I said no way. They finely claimed to have replaced panel again and reinstalled software on hdd. I have had it back for 3 weeks and so far so good. but between shipping and repairs I have used it less than half to time I have owned it. THERE ONLY RESPONCE EVERY TIME I CALLED IS WAIT A LITTLE LONGER. I have lost my faith in there product at this point. I hope they can some how win me over as a customer again some day.

4 out of 5 eggsNo Regrets Yet

Pros: -The "Hybrid" drive (it's actually two different units... the SDD component is a separate chip (Kingston) attached to the MOBO) allows for a fast boot time out-of-box (but for some reason is not recognizable as a separate drive in the OS...)

-When I bought this product, it was on sale for $580. You just don't see deals like that. C'mon? An i7 ultrabook for less than $600? I had no choice...

-Size- 15.6" is (in my opinion) the perfect balance between visibility and portability.

-This PC has incredibly accessible internal components. Once you remove the back panel, you have access to the WIFI card, HDD, CPU, fan, screen hinges, speakers... basically everything but the touchpad and keyboard. This is the most accessible laptop I have ever worked with.

- The ventilation of the laptop pushes the air out right beneath the right-hand side of the monitor (behind the hinge) so it's hidden. I thought that was pretty nifty design.

Cons: -When my computer came and I turned it on for the first time... the HDD sounded like it was over 10 years old. It was actually concerning to me how much noise it made.

-for some reason, my speakers pop whenever the computer does something processing intensive (ex: on boot up, whenever a screen changes, there's a distinctive pop, or right after I log in/open a program) It's just one pop, then it's done.

-I guess the graphic could be a bit better... but I don't really use this computer for heavy gaming, so I'm fine with the resolution.

-The black, aluminum brushed part of the case is prone to finger prints.

-The maximum operating temperature of the CPU in this computer is 100C. My laptop runs at 50-54C idle, and after playing games (League of Legends- High/Low graphics quality... it doesn't matter apparently...) my CPU/MOBO run at 68-75C after an hour or so (room temp is below 75F). I know I'm dealing with a laptop here... but I'd prefer the idle temp to be at least 10C cooler. While I noted that the vents on this machine look good in the pros section, I don't know how effective they are. If you look at the back panel of the machine, you'll notice one small ventilation hole for the entire PC. That's all you get. I'm considering drilling some holes and getting a laptop cooler to get the temps I want.

-WIN8. I know I know... everyone hates WIN8 because of the interface. The truth is, I LOVE the WIN8 interface! I also love that my computer asks for my login information after 5 seconds of pressing the power button. WIN8 is amazing software. So why is this a con? WIN8 licensing is the most terrible thing to ever happen. Your license to run WIN8 is through ASUS, NOT Microsoft. This means that if your HDD fails, you have to get a backup disk from ASUS for the EXACT OEM software that was installed on your machine out-of-box. No more free DigitalRiver downloads and easy do-it-yourself fixes. End users are left powerless. Considering my HDD was bad to begin with, this meant transferring my WIN8 software to a new drive was much more difficult than it would have been with WIN7 (the SDD I used to replace came with cloning software... but it didn't copy the recovery partition, so I'm well... out of luck if my OS fails. ASUS has yet to respond to my emails to them about purchasing an OEM version of WIN8. It's been well over two months since I opened a ticket with them.)

-Speaking of OEM bloatware- I cannot for the life of me get all of McAfee off of this PC. And I hate McAfee. All I can do is disable the program's features.

Other Thoughts: -The Main problem I have with this computer is the WIN8 licensing, but you'll see that with any WIN8 machine...

-I don't regret my purchase. If I would be offered a full refund for this product, I would refuse it. This is a nice machine that runs smoothly, looks good, and helps me, as a student, get my work done efficiently. Thanks ASUS!

-BTW, I replaced the internal HDD with a SAMSUNG 840 Pro (120 GB). That thing is a BEAST if you are looking for a replacement drive! Replacing the HDD component with a SDD now makes the only moving part of this PC the heatsink fan, which greatly reduces noise and energy consumption.

2 out of 5 eggsNothing Ultra About It

Pros: Sleek, light, and fast

Cons: >Touchpad broke
>Keyboard broke
> Finally, Hard Drive failed.

I wanted a lightweight, portable laptop for school. Ended up with a laptop attached to a keyboard, mouse, and using a separate hard drive.

Other Thoughts: Needs more quality control, I've only had this for 2 months.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Service

Pros: Computer works fine, basically as advertised.

Cons: Newegg did not ship it 2-day as paid for, made it perfectly clear they do not care to retain my business over and over - basically, I'm still waiting for an answer to my complaints, and it's been roughly 1.5 months. See no reason to ever do business with Newegg again.

Other Thoughts: If you order from Newegg, you better hope everything comes on time and isn't damaged, because otherwise... well, good luck.

1 out of 5 eggsProduct Failed

Pros: Looks sharp, performed fine for the first couple weeks

Cons: Device has horizontal graphic bars (both in windows / bois). Multiple system repairs/diagnostic attempts later issue still happening. Currently won't post.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this device for my father as a 70th birthday, wanting him to have something nice when visiting family on the road. He used it in earnest late November and started encountering issues. Initially I thought it was just a matter of getting him used to windows 8.1, but upon using the device, realized it is seriously broken. I have attempted on multiple times to repair the issue by running the prompted diagnostics/etc., all to no avail. Device locks up, reboots at will, displays video corruption on the screen in no particular order.

A shame since I've used the ASUS p35 Deluxe MB since 2008 and that product has been great.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat deal when on sale

Pros: Lightweight and thin for the screen size
Incredible battery life
Responsive touchscreen
24gb ssd - windows boots in seconds
Nice brushed aluminum finish
Slot for extra RAM
Core i7 1.9ghz - surprisingly fast and responsive at all tasks

Cons: Win 8 - but it's for my wife and she loves win 8 as she's barely computer literate. She'd wanted a Macbook air (for twice the cost) but now likes this more.
Low screen resolution

Other Thoughts: If you don't mind Win8 and find this on sale (I got it for $579 with a free laptop carrying backpack) it can't be beat. The comments about the screen having a poor display must be manufacturing problems, other than the low rez mine looks great.
