1 out of 5 eggsWorked well for a few months, then dead.

Pros: The specs on this laptop were great:
A nice i5 CPU, 750gb HDD, 6gb ram, webcam, VGA and HDMI, etc.

Cons: It came with Win8, which I am not a fan of. At first I attempted to get a dual boot working with either Ubuntu or Linux Mint, but Windows Secure Boot made it a real pain, so I just dealt with it.

This laptop worked well for my schoolwork(Computer Science Major). I was able to program, compile, multitask, etc and it worked well. When not doing schoolwork, all I used this for was netflix and reddit.

Unfortunately, about 7 months after I purchased this laptop, the HDD started to fail. It would start making a loud whizzing noise, and often would not boot past the post. I tried many times to re-seat the HDD but I would get stuck at the Win8 system repair screen and couldn't proceed further.

I had purchased the 1-year replacement plan from Newegg, and I filed a claim with them, explaining that the issue was most likely just a HDD failure, and it could easily be fixed with a new HDD. So, I shipped out the laptop for service, and the same day they received it, they decided they would rather just refund my $$$ instead of doing a simple HDD swap.

Had I known that was going to happen, I would have just bought a new hard drive and fixed it myself.

Other Thoughts: Was a good notebook with good specs and served me well for half a year, but the hard drive failure and subsequent decisions of the service plan people made me regret sending it in for replacement.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for the positive comment. I apologize if the hardrive prematurely failed after 7 months, which is an isolated case. Should you need further assistance, please email me at and write down service# 3771570 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap, fast, everything works on linux, battery life around 5 hours without suspend. Best part is it was sold as having 6 gigs of RAM. Showed up with 8 gigs. Thanks santa.

Cons: The casing is kinda flimsy. But its not a trampoline so i can live with that for the price.

4 out of 5 eggsgreat deal!

Pros: The appearance is fine, not have scratch and dent on the top and inside the computer. I just added another language after I had updated win 8 to win8.1 version. You may get it from microsoft website.
it is my first time to use win8. It is not very easy to use the new feature at the beginning. After watching youtu, I used 3 hours to reset everything, including app, personal setting. It is not so hard though. I don't need to downgrade it to win7.
i seldom play game, and fun by playing app. Win8 is less continence than win7, taking more step to shift to another functions, also takes long time to log in account.

Cons: keyboard is very disappointed me. the keys are very lose. Also the number keypad has to turn on each time when I open my computer.

Other Thoughts: I should wait for the item that it has touch screen function, since it will move fast than click on the button.

in All, it is a good deal,

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop Deal!

Pros: Great Performance. The I5 processor installed Visual Studio 2012 in 30mins. My previous experience was 3+ hrs.

The machine came in perfect shape. No blemish noticable.

Amazing deal.

Cons: The screen is a little dull. That's it!

Other Thoughts: Hard to beat for the $$$. No notice that it's refurbished, no scratch or dent in mine.

Correction from my previous review about incomplete OS. I misunderstood what I was dealing with, and the ASUS support person (though trying to help) was far more ignorant than me. I wish there was a way to edit or remove the old review.

5 out of 5 eggsTo Dave A above

Pros: Cheap, and works fine. Upgrading to 8.1 made it even better
Dave A, you should check to make sure your bios doesn't have the cores disabled, as mine uses all cores just fine.

Cons: A little on the flimsy side, for the keys, but that's just my nitpicking.

Other Thoughts: Good deal for the money

4 out of 5 eggsFantastic laptop

Pros: I got this refurbished laptop over a year ago from Sears on Black Friday for only $350. There weren't even any flaws with the laptop. Not a single scratch or dent anywhere that I could find.

This laptops specs are just as good as they look. It's a given that it's more than great for simply doing work or surfing the internet. The Intel HD 3000 graphic card allows you to play a fair variety of games such as Call of Duty 4, World of Warcraft (3.3.5) and Spore all while getting great FPS.

The 6GB of RAM (more than my gaming desktop ironically) is great for multi-tasking. No worries about slowing the computer down.

The processor... Well.. It's my first Intel. It's done just fine I suppose.

The advertised 750GB HDD was only 698GB for me, but that was still big enough even though I like to keep backups of my games and movies.

Nice large touch-pad in-case a few of you don't enjoy those irritatingly small ones.

Battery life is average. If you switch around some settings to save power, you can extend the battery life by a considerable amount.

Cons: Dis-assembly for cleaning is not enjoyable.

Two USB 3.0 and one 2.0. I don't understand why they didn't use all 3.0's.

Internal speakers aren't very loud when in your lap. Sound is amplified when set on a solid flat surface such as a desk or table. Also the audio drivers don't utilize 5.1 surround sound very well even after tweaking settings.

Other Thoughts: Extremely happy with this laptop. Was forced to replace my gaming desktop with this for a few months while the PSU was burnt out. To make it simple, lets just say I wasn't let down.

1 out of 5 eggsMajor Gotcha: Need to buy Windows

Pros: Great Laptop for the Money so far. Screen is ok, performance for a machine only using 1 of its cores is great.

the included license seems to only use 1 of 2 cores (D'OH!). Now I must BUY WINDOWS to use the full power of the machine.

Other Thoughts: What seemed like a great deal, is now, at best OK. Maybe not even, since I would've made a different choice if I realized the "TRUE" price.

The support person was very patient and cooperative. But, I wasn't thrilled when he pointed out that I should have read the agreement.

It's just that I never dreamed this would be a problem. I assumed I was getting a fully functional laptop. I didn't imagine I would have to pay MORE!
