5 out of 5 eggsASUS ME400-C2-BK

Pros: Bought refurbished from NewEgg and it came sans any documentation, but looked completely new and documentation is just a Google away. Good construction, fast booting, bright screen, mediocre speaker volume, great BlueTooth connectivity, and descent weight. Windows 8 tablet features work. Upgrades easily to 8.1. For real connectivity, I added a powered 7-port USB hub with a micro to Mini USB cable and was then able to use DVD-RW, keyboard, mouse, printer, and storage. Overall I am very pleased given the quality, features, speed, and price ($249).

Cons: On board keyboard obscures what you are typing. Slightly heavy for watching movies in bed. Really, after 3 months of ownership that is all...

Other Thoughts: Buy this if you 1) Need a windows 8 computer, and 2) You spend only $250. At full retail, I might reconsider.

Pros: Bought for 275 used. Worked like a charm. No problems there. The tablet appeared brand new and came with most of its paperwork as well.

Cons: - The Windows version they use to refurb these used tablets is NOT UPDATABLE to windows 8.1.
- After a few months , the windows key they use will expire and ask you to activate again. When this happens, windows will not be able to activate and you will be stuck with a useless tablet unless you buy a new key.

Other Thoughts: I tried consulting with other users here at Newegg to and downloaded all necessary updates to my tablet. Also did a factory reset and re-updated again. This tablet cannot be updated by any means to win 8.1 other than buying a brand new copy of windows, which defeats the purpose of buying a refurb tablet.

Buying a refurb item is a risk in itself, and I did not appreciate that the description said this tablet was 8.1 ready, when it was not.

Also, the windows version used on these refurb tablets only lasts a few months and windows will not let you activate it by any means.

I find that to be a blatant mislead from both newegg and asus and I would like someone to help me solve this problem ASAP.

I have never had ANY problems with ASUS products, or Newegg, so as you may understand, I'm very dissapointed.

Now my tablet is basically a brick...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's great to know that you were satisfied with the tablet. I certainly understand your concern regarding failure to upgrade WINDOWS to 8.1. The upgrade to WIDOWS 8.1 is free and a new product key is not needed. Please contact Microsoft for expert advice upgrading the OS successfully. If you need further assistance, please email me at and write down service# 3537089 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Tablet

Pros: Once the tablet is updated, it runs great. I will talk about updates in the "other thoughts" column. I haven't owned it long but after a few days of heavy use i usually tend to get a good grasp of how an electronic device is going to act. Short term wise, it has great battery life, runs smooth, connects to my wireless perfectly, and works with my bluetooth keyboard. Screen size is perfect for what i use it for. So far all of the apps i have downloaded work great. Both front and rear cameras are good. Rear camera has a flash which works great. Touch screen is responsive and has yet to give me problems. I was hesitant going into windows 8 and this tablet helped ease me in. As for the tablet , i would not have imagined it was a refurb had i not known beforehand. The screen and case of the tablet are blemish freen and everything looks and acts brand new. I may just be lucky but everything is great.

Cons: None really with the tablet. Any glitches have been tied to software and not the hardware of this tablet. I will put it in the cons becauase it is but its not a con of the tablet. Newegg took a long time to ship this out. I know that this was around the holidays and such but newegg took forever to get it out of their warehouse. I had rush processing and everything but it just sat in the warehouse for a few days. I have ordered tons of parts on newegg and this was the first time something like this had happened so its no dig on newegg but i figured with rush processing it would get out faster. Regardless I will still continue to buy from newegg. Only other complaint is i wish it came updated with the most recent critical updates to save me some time but as you can see, all of my complaints have been because im probably just an impatient person.

Other Thoughts: As another person stated, UPDATE first. I couldnt do anything as far as installing apps and it ran horrible until i did. Some people will blame the tablet on this, but it is not the tablets fault. Its the name of the game with windows. If you dont have it updated all the way, its not going to work right. It took me from after i got home from work until the next morning to update everything up to windows 8.1. Install all critical updates and if so compelled update to 8.1 before doing anything else. Otherwise, like the other reviewer said, you are going to have a lot of frustrations. Take the extra few hours and get this thing updated. I cannot start to explain how much time it will save you in the long run. Like i said my apps wouldnt update and the tablet was acting horrible (software wise) until i updated all critical updates. After that i installed windows 8.1 which took forever(10mbps) to download and install. Once updated it runs great. I am even typing this on this exact ablet on the newegg app that i just downloaded. I got this for really cheap, so for the price i paid and the function it fills, it is worth well what i paid and then some. If you dont want to risk it with a refurb like i did, then just spend the extra bucks and get a brand new one so you have the extra warranty and stuff. But if youre like me and dont have all the cash for a new one but have some basic technical knowledge to get this up and running good then get this, you wont regret it.

4 out of 5 eggsAsus VivoTab ME400c-c2 Refurb

Pros: Very light compared to my 3rd gen ipad
was quick on the touch screen, very easy to use.

Cons: as a referb the was residue and smudges like they did not finished cleaning it before they boxed it.

Power block gets HOT (only cons so far)

Below is things i knew going in so just keep in mind before you buy... Read all the lines in the decreptions

it came windows 8. to up to 8.1 you have to do all the updates and there were a lot. (no different than a Pc)

Power plug is tight fit.(be easy with it)

Widows office key not included.
(was not a issuefor me.)

Unit will not charge will microUSB is in use and vise verse.
(was not a issuefor me.)

No Dock keyboards are available. keep that in mind (was not a issuefor me.)

you will need to order Adapter Cable set for the Micro HDMI and USB 2.0. I ordered the EEEKit Bundle for Asus (so was not a issuefor me.)

I know you excited but update first. your frustion will be less in the long run..... the updates are there for a reason......
over all i like it very much. when the apps catch up this will be first class. but i did not buy to game on. if you read the descriptions you will know they are not offering a office key. and being a Referb you almost all ways get just the power block, cable and unit. there were no surprises here. there will be problems with everything you buy. but this was a good unit. it is hard to get to the micoSd and connections as you may read. keep in mind if the cap did not fit snug they would just fall off. I am buying a second for my Wife.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Tablet

Pros: Great Windows 8 tablet. Runs full Windows at less than the cost of a Slate running reduced version. Add up to 64GB additional storage with a micro SD card. USB port can be used for charging or with an adapter you can use a portable DVD drive if you have disk based programs you want to use. Easy, free upgrade to Windows 8.1

Cons: None but wish it had full size USB ports but there really isn't room for them

Other Thoughts: I have the new retail version and not the refurbished. There is always a risk with the refurbished units and if you are not tech savy I recommend you buy new retail with any computer products. I got mine for $289 so getting a refurb is not worth the risk.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad,,,

Pros: This Windows Tablet works well and the price is resonable considering that this is a refurbished product.

Cons: This Tablet arrives from Newegg very barebones, the only thing included in the box is the Tablet and the Charger...that's it.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this unit from NewEgg 23 days ago and at the time the description stated that it comes with Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013 & it must be activated with an included activation code which is supposed to be included with the tablet. The tablet came with Microsoft Office 2010 not 2013 and there was no activation card included with the tablet and it seems that many people did not get the activation code as you can see from the Q&A on this product, NewEgg has since changed the description of this product to exclude the offer of Microsoft Office.
I realize that this is a refurbished product and refurbished products do not always come with all the bells and whitles that new products come with but I think an owners manual would be nice to include in the package, as I said in the Cons that all you get when you buy this is the Tablet and Charger, Period!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Price For a Windows 8 Tablet

Pros: Full blown Windows 8 Operating System can be upgraded to the latest Windows 8.1. Physically, very light weight in comparison to my Windows RT Surface (which I still love). Functionality wise similar to the Surface RT. I am able to install Kaspersky ISS since it is the full OS and not the RT version. Comes with Windows Office 2010 Demo so popped in my license key and was good to go. The covers over the SD slot and micro HDMI port were cumbersome so I popped those out for ease of access.

Cons: It doesn't happen often but occasionally I have been getting the BSOD with the error message "sdbus_internal_error". No fixes are available at this time but being an avid Windows user I know there'll be a fix coming via a windows update. Hopefully sooner than later.

Other Thoughts: The Pros outweigh the Cons. Install a security suite immediately since this is a Windows 8 OS. If you want free then go Microsoft Security Suite. Willing to pay? Then go with Kaspersky Internet Security Suite.

1 out of 5 eggsDON'T BUY! DON'T BUY

Pros: Light weight. Can run windows programs. Great when it's working

Cons: I titled this as a DON'T BUY because the unit will not turn on AND Newegg will not guarantee it.

Simply stated: the unit I purchased will not turn on or wake up from a sleep. I've updated the bios and it seemed to work OK for 2 days. Now, after being fully charged (white light on), it will not turn on.

As this is a manufactured refurbished item NEWEGG will not warrant it under their normal excellent warranty policy. I was successful in getting them to RMA'ing it with the hopes of getting another unit. However, they returned the old unit saying they burned it in for 12 hours and did not have any problems turning it on or off.

I'm now going to attempt another RMA request but am not hopeful as NEWEGG was rather reluctant to have me return the unit originally and they do not refund/exchange the unit for a working model. They will also not provide a credit or refund. So it looks like I just have a "brick" on my hands

Other Thoughts: Pay the additional couple of hundred bucks and get a good working unit that is at least guaranteed. This refurbished unit is simply a waste of your money if you receive one like mine and there's no recourse to getting a working unit.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for the issues that you are having with your refurbished tablet. Although it is a refurb, you do have a 90 day warranty through Asus. If Newegg is unable to fix the issues for you, you can send it in to us. We can’t provide you with a refund or exchange either, but we can try to fix it at one of our authorized repair facilities. If you would like to go this route, please feel free to e-mail me at I’ll be more than happy to help. Please include ref. # 3090664 and we can start your case.

Best Regards,

ASUS Customer Loyalty
