2 out of 5 eggsDisappointing!

Pros: Full numpad, 1TB HDD, 8GB RAM, looks impressive

Cons: Slow and unresponsive! Repeatedly locks up or stutters when running applications and sometimes the screen goes black and flashes on and off for a while. The mousepad gestures don't work correctly either, even after tweaking them with the included software. I work at a computer hardware company and use many different workstations and laptops frequently, but I have never had such a bad experience as I have with this.

Other Thoughts: Very disappointing; the hardware looks like a good setup for general computing on paper but when it struggles to open a browser window it really doesn't matter what the numbers say. The simplest tasks bring this PC to its knees.

3 out of 5 eggsAcceptable, minor drawbacks

Pros: Everything's peachy once you install windows 8.1 and classic shell (windows 8 should be reserved for tablets and and phones, completely counter-intuitive for people that have been using windows for any amount of time). I like the location of the power button (no accidental on/off like with some sony models). Very long battery life, lightweight and slim. USB 3.0 is great, Speakers are the best I've had on a laptop, and extremely powerful. Doesn't get hot at all even running games on high settings.

Cons: The matte screen is awful, collects any dirt or oil directly from the keyboard when closed (rubber stoppers aren't high enough). Screen is easily scratched and difficult to clean, and it becomes obvious on the exterior as well as the entire case is highly textured plastic (doesn't show fingerprints, but who cares when any abrasion permanently damages it?). The touchpad is by far the worst part. Under-touch buttons to try to be more Mac-ish, leading to lots of mis-clicks. Touchpad occasionally snaps into the frame making it click at the lightest touch, need knife to pop it back up. They also tried to make the power cord Mac-i-fied, with a heavy brick plugging directly into sockets (so it always falls out). caps lock/etc indicator lights are nearly invisible except in complete darkness. Intel HD sucks, barely any customization options, but I knew what i was getting when I bought it, so can't really complain there.

Other Thoughts: This is my 5th laptop, and for the price I think it's great, and i plan on using it for years to come, but the touchpad is causing me major issues that I foresee only getting worse, and the matte plastic screen gets scratches even though I carry it in its own soft drawstring bag and only touch it with microfiber (probably dirt on keys which touch the screen directly)

3 out of 5 eggsLacks dual-band wifi (it has 2.4GHz only)

Pros: Seems solidly built. Should be easy to work on for when I replace the wifi card. Boots relatively quickly, even with the slow 5400rpm hard drive.

Cons: Buying a computer in 2014, I expect 5GHz wifi. Also, the listing states that the graphics are Intel HD 5000.

This is a lie. The graphics are Intel HD 4500.

The trackpad isn't the best, but it gets the job done.

Other Thoughts: The wifi works great for web browsing, but we upgraded our computer to use with a Chromecast. To get tab casting to work, I need the computer to be on 5GHz, otherwise the picture is choppy. Wifi is half duplex, so having the Chromecast and the computer on different freqs is neccessary for smooth performance.

Asus includes software for the trackpad that allows for two finger scrolling, a 3 finger gesture to show the desktop, and you can slide from the left to switch to the last application, and slide from the right to show the settings thingy in windows 8.

5 out of 5 eggsSatisfied

Pros: I am a student who also needs a computer for home use. This had all of the features I needed and no extras. It's lightweight and easy to setup. I like the keyboard. It seems to fit my hands perfectly. My past laptop and desktop PC were cumbersome. I have large hands and skinny fingers. Overall, I got a lot of bang for my buck. I really recommend this as a good buy because the price is good for the what I'll be using this for. I could have spent $1500 for a similar model.

Cons: I think the mouse pad is too large. At the same time, this is useful if you do not use a wireless mouse.
The cursor jumps around quite a bit or sometimes freezes. I was under the impression that MS Office '13 was already installed on this. Apparently not as I am being asked for a key which I do not have.

Other Thoughts: My thoughts may not accurately reflect the overall quality of this computer. This laptop is a much needed update from the 6 year old dinosaur laptop I had been using. Laptop technology has changed quite a bit it seems When shopping for a new laptop, I also used Consumer Reports. Although CR is not always reliable, I mixed their reviews with Newegg users and found that this computer had decent to good reviews from both sources. This what helped my decide. My new laptop has, so far, lived up to the reviews.
