1 out of 5 eggsestimate for repairs

Pros: Liked it when it was working. Asus responded to my review.

Cons: Still not working. Lack of Warranty and Newegg refurbished items policy aren't going to help me it appears. Shop estimates $350 motherboard replacement. I got a second opinion, and they believe it could be the video card, closer to $250. Less than 5 months of ownership and this $450 computer is not the deal I thought it was.

1 out of 5 eggsBlack screen issue- Update coming

Pros: Excellent laptop for the price.

Cons: windows 8, no touch screen.

Other Thoughts: Screen went black after 5 months. No warranty past 3 months on this item, so off to the repair shop. Google this laptop and you'll find others having the same issue after about 6 months of ownership. Stay away from this shiny lemon, don't let the price fool you. I'll update after repairs are made.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's great to know that the laptop is an excellent product for the price. I certainly understand your concern regarding the system failing to bootup suddenly. Please try to do a hardware reset by disconnecting the battery and the AC adapter and let the unit sit for at least 10 minutes to drain the current and clear the memory. Also, try to power up the system using a battery or an AC adapter only and disconnect any external devices connected and any memory card inserted in the card slot before turning the system on. If you need further assistance, please email me at and write down service# 3637830 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Excellent machine so far. Arrived a day ahead of schedule via UPS. Everything seems to work great and no evidence of this being a refurb machine.

Cons: Terrible keyboard layout. When you go for the left shift key you get \ ... When you go for the enter key you get \ ... Why do we need the backslash in two places on a notebook keyboard??????

4 out of 5 eggsgood machine

Pros: i7, 6g Ram, titanium case, 750G HDD
fast machine, asus reliable. nice keyboard and feel. sturdy but slim.

Cons: no overclocking.. BOOOO, Intel's website was a tad misleading on this (it's been a while since I kept up with all the lingo) short... "Turbo Boost up to 3.0Ghz DOES NOT mean that you can overclock this... in fact.. it's BIOS locked. The turbo boost is factory controlled.... so I was disappointed with that.

24G SSD (mSATA) is not for OS or storage and invisible to Windows (in My Computer), It is solely used as a cache drive. 6G of which are partitioned for the 'instant on" function...

Also, the partition on main drive gives windows too much space.
reinstalling to fix that would result in the user having to allocate and setup the cache drive again... biggest beef with this machine is probably related more to the refurb end of it... using the mouse, I can feel the under-bezel clicking into and out of place constantly... its insanely annoying.. so I'm left choosing one of two things that I dont want to do.... I either send it back to RMA and am without a computer for a few weeks...or I bite the bullet and accept another laptop with substandard user functionality.

Other Thoughts: After finding out that the SSD is mSATA, I had to figure out something to do with the extra 500G hdd I bought to replace it.... So, I found this really neat enclosure that replaces your dvd drive with a 2.5" sata hdd of your choice. Very cool since my plan was to dual boot Win8/ArchLinux ... going to attempt dual cache too :)
