5 out of 5 eggsDoes what it was intended for...

Pros: Casual internets lurker? This small laptop is for you! Enough RAM and HDD space for someone who just wants to watch movies or browse the net. Light web based games or such; music streaming, etc. Better deal than buying a tablet as a gift for someone. If tweaked properly, it will give you all around 5 hour up time on the battery, which is more than enough to get your eyes tired, who spends that much time on the computer anyways? Great, slim and small notebook for your everyday stay-at-home browsing.

Cons: Not really a bad thing but the keyboard feels too "chicletty".

Other Thoughts: In no way it should be considered a primary work laptop, it was made for a gentle use; it is not brittle, but not a toughbook by any means.

Comes with Windows 8, not a fan. They seem to be pushing it with every new piece of hardware which is a big selling point, Newegg should support more Windows 7 systems.

2 out of 5 eggsRegistry Errors Out of the Box

Pros: Hardware works as expected, thus far

Cons: Right out of the box, before anything else was done, Windows 8 failed to update(wouldn't even start to download the updates). Long story short, there were several registry errors, and Asus Tech support's recommendations did not help whatsoever. After various troubleshooting steps including factory restores, and recommendations from Microsoft forums and Microsoft fixit tools, 100+ cmd lines, and hours of frustration with no results, I finally got it to work by using a sequence of random suggestions from said forums. The exact cause and fixis still unknown, as around 5am (up all night) after just gambling with dozens of random ideas, it started to work.

One may argue this is not Asus' fault (who knows, it COULD be caused from the Asus Bloatware that's preinstalled), but whether that's the cause or not, Asus should not be shipping a product with such fundamental flaws that requires advance knowledge to fix, even if its caused by software they do not own.

And IF its 100% due to windows 8, and not some poor configuration on Asus' end, then with this OS being as old as it is they should ship it with exact instructions on how to bypass the issues, or at the very least Tech Support should have the exact steps to fix it.

Please note that I followed Asus' exact recommended steps to get the computer, right out of a full factory restore, to work properly to no avail before attempting my own methods.

5 out of 5 eggsCOMPACT & EFFICIENT

Pros: Bought this for my wife who is rough on heavier laptops. This notebook is light and compact, makes other laptops feel like bags of bricks. The 14" screen is much better than 10" netbook screen and tablets. Not concerned about lack of DVD drive since I have an inexpensive USB DVD drive I bought a Newegg. Battery life is good.

Very little bloatware, removed a couple programs then downloaded Win 8.1 update. Update took about 6-7 hours to download and install. Installed programs used on Windows 7 laptop and all are working well, including Thunderbird, Firefox, Winpatrol, Spywareblaster, Libreoffice, Terabyte, etc. Memory speed is good. Hard drive speed is satisfactory.

If you need a light, easy to carry computer to access internet, email, Facebook, word processing, spreadsheets, etc., then consider purchasing this notebook.

Cons: Built-in mouse lacks responsiveness. Get a small USB mouse. Windows 8/8.1 start page is clumsy and inefficient, get 8.1 update and set to default to standard Windows desktop at startup. You can traverse to new start page if needed.

Don't like Microsoft's programs on start page that completely fill screen and take control of computer away from user.

Other Thoughts: Have not had any problems with space bar, works fine.

I do not like Windows 8/8.1 default appearance. O/S internals are improvement over previous but new layout is too different from previous versions. New start page reminds me of colored building blocks for preschoolers. I'd prefer default standard Windows desktop with option to traverse to new start page. Windows 8.1 puts start button in lower left but no menu access to installed programs when right click. Left click traverses to new start page.

Looks like Microsoft is copying Roku station(program) menu because there is no menu, everything is spread out across the start page. Drilling down into menus is much more efficient and superior organization than scrolling across a wide screen searching for programs.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Laptop For the Price

Pros: - Small and light good for those folks who do not like the 10key
- For the cost you paid you get a basic laptop which is best for folks who email and surf the web
- onboard card reader good for folks looking to easily offload pictures from the digital cameras on the road

Cons: - hard to get at memory and HDD

Other Thoughts: - Upgradeable RAM 8GB MAX and HDD is possible but be prepared to take the whole thing apart to get at it.

4 out of 5 eggsGood balance, quite portable

Pros: Light weight, decent screen, very good touchpad responsiveness and size, advanced close-the-lid standby or sleep mode, decent battery life (3+hours with screen at full brightness). Windows 8.1 upgradable. Fan is quiet, unit doesn't get too warm. 14" laptops fit way better in most backpacks, in my opinion. Allows VGA or HDMI connections.

Cons: The physical click portion of the touchpad requires a bit more pressure than I like, and makes a loud clunky click--but it works. I just got used to touch-clicking, rather than using the left physical button. The rubber bumpers around the screen bezel are the kind that are prone to damaging the display if your notebook gets very compressed inside a backpack with a lot of books--be careful or slide some sort of spacer to prevent bumper-to-body contact when the lid is closed (and it may be squished in a backpack). Screen brightness is great indoors, suffers outdoors. May have to get an external CD/DVD drive (for like thirty bucks) to keep on standby. No Bluetooth, which is kinda dumb.

Other Thoughts: The Celeron 1000M CPU s a far more capable than I would have guessed, and handles complex 2D graphics easily. Online research indicates that it should handle some 3D graphics and gaming at lower in-game settings and lower frame rates, but I have not tried. The slowest part of this laptop is probably the HDD, which could be replaced by a knowledgable person with a small SSD. Frankly, this is a great schoolwork and web surfing machine in a significantly more compact and lighweight package than your standard 15.x" laptop--and a pretty good deal, since it has the full year warranty (unlike most refurb units).

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Deal - But 3 day shipping is a lie

Pros: This laptop was a great deal for the price tag. Dual-Core Celeron and Intel HD Graphics run games like World of Warcraft on normal graphics settings with no lag and 25-30 fps. Way better than my 4 year old Toshiba Netbook with Intel Atom 1.66Ghz CPU with 2GB RAM and Windows XP Home and $80 cheaper than the netbook that I bought here on newegg back in November 2009 for $350

Cons: Paid the extra $2.99 to have this in 3 days. Ordered on Friday 11/1/2013. As of Monday 11/4/2013, I didnt have my laptop. I contacted Newegg via chat and asked why in the tracking info it shows that it didnt even ship until Monday 11/4/2013 when payment cleared on Friday 11/1/2013. I was told that it takes 1 to 2 business days to process orders and that you have to add 3 days onto that... so I said, so the 3 day shipping that I paid an extra $2.99 for is really 4 or 5 day shipping. The answer I got was YES! Great, so I wasted $2.99 when normally with the regular free shipping I get it in 4 or 5 days anyways. The last time I pay the extra to receive my product in the same time as free shipping! >=(

Other Thoughts: The other review on here with 2 of 5 eggs is stupid because the buyer is giving it 2 of 5 eggs because it doesnt have an optical drive. The item description clearly indicates this fact so it should be rated better than 2 of 5. I ddnt rate this 5 of 5 only because I paid the extra $2.99 to have it in 3 days, and it took 5 days. Looking on google I see others complaining about getting jipped by the 3 day shipping which is a lie or misleading at the least. Will never again pay the extra to get it sooner, as for I received it the same amount of time as I would have with free shipping.

2 out of 5 eggsWere is the cd ram drive for this?

Pros: It runs well, light, & sleek

Cons: Without a CD Ram Drive how do you get programs installed, so had to get an additional External drive to take over this function witch; means more to carry. Pain in the back side.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Mr. Jim Wall,

I'm glad to know that the laptop runs well and is sleek. I'm sorry if you didn't find a CD/DVDROM drive, the laptop doesn't come with an internal CD/DVD drive. You can connect an external USB CD/DVDROM drive to install programs from a CD or DVD media. If you need further assistance, please email me at and write down service# 3104411 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.
