5 out of 5 eggsLove ASUS

Pros: Low ASUS price with their usual great quality. There certainly is nothing fancy about these units, but they do the job of daily office work wonderfully.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you plan to install a different OS, be aware that the SSD drive probably will not be large enough. Win 7 is simply too big even if you do a custom install and move things like the Users folders onto the other drive at install time. They still come in handy however, for installing something like the Adobe suite (InDesign, Photoshop, etc...). They do run nicely on the SSD compared to a normal HDD install.

2 out of 5 eggsnot quite right

Pros: Good weight, stiffness, keyboard. Decent processor for price

Cons: Not configured properly. HD is all chopped up into about 7 partitions. No factory restore image. Fails when I try to create a system backup. The SSD is just sitting there, it is not configured for 2 second boot or ssd caching. 24 GB is to small for a system partition, si I can not just reinstall, even if I had a windows 8 disk.

Other Thoughts: I really like the size and feel of this laptop, but the ssd issues make it not worth what they are asking. I will post a question to see if anyone knows how to fix the ssd problems. I will probably return it if Asus does not give me a way to reinstall properly. I definitely did not get what was advertised.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's good to know that you are satisfied with the good weight, stiffness, keyboard and the decent processor for the price of the laptop. I certainly understand your concern how the hardrive was partitioned into 7 volumes. Normally, the hardrive will only have 2 partitions. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3541163 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

Regards,

1 out of 5 eggsBeware of ASUS laptops!

Pros: Only Pro is it is light.

Cons: These were bought by a previous technology director of the school I work at. He bought about 250 of these laptops spending well over $100,000 on them. They are complete junk. On 240 out of 250 of them the number 2 key sticks on the keyboard. We have had HDDs crash (thankfully I disabled SSD as I have heard nothing but issues with those), Wireless stop working, screws fall out of the laptop, USB ports break, VGA ports break out of the laptop, DVD drives break, and other random issues.

ASUS warranty has been unbelievably difficult to work with. They wanted me to send back all 240 laptops to have them service the keyboard. They would "fix" the ones I sent back and then they had the exact same problem. If I send the keyboard back to be fixed - you think they would push the key after "repairing" it - but no they send it back still broken.

ASUS doesn't care that they are complete junk - refusing to make it right by extending the warranty by any length.

I have bought ASUS products in the past (motherboards) and they were great - these are not - even the motherboards in these laptops are terrible.

The HDD's are cheap Hatachi and they break randomly - not even lasting a couple of months.

So disappointed in ASUS.

3 out of 5 eggsGood laptop, horrible wifi

Pros: The hardware product is overall good for the cost.
It is lightweight and has a good computing power, primary and secondary memory.

Cons: Windows 8 comes preinstalled on the HDD part of the SSD-HDD disk and there is no way to reinstall it optimally without buying another Windows 8 license.
There is perhaps a problem with the wifi chip of my machine but I can't connect to Wifi unless I'm very close to a router (15-30' tops). The problem occurs on Windows 8 and on a linux distro.

Other Thoughts: I am happy of my purchase, even though I'm now always carrying a network cable and had to reinstall the OS properly.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Frank,

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product. I certainly understand your concern regarding the WIFI weak signal. A WIFI driver update maybe needed depending which wireless is being accessed. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3541535 on the subject line.
