2 out of 5 eggsA nightmare

Pros: I love the size, the inclusion of Microsoft Office, and I convinced myself that I could learn to live with Windows 8.

Cons: It took me weeks to update the OS - I experienced multiple errors trying to run windows update. At long last, I got them all installed and updated to Win8.1. Managed to use the laptop exactly once before it totally froze and wouldn't boot. Had to reinstall windows, and now windows update will only show me updates but not allow me to download them. Beyond frustrated

Other Thoughts: I bought this to use just a couple times a year, when I travel for an extended period. It was to replace my old, underpowered netbook, but I never had anywhere near this many problems with the netbook

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's great to know that you love the size of the laptop and the inclusion of MS Office. I certainly understand your difficulty installing all recommended WINDOWS Updates and upgrading to WINDOWS 8.1. We recommend using a LAN connection to improve download and speed up the update process. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3676228 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

3 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: Installs Ubuntu 13.10 in dual boot without any issues. Under Ubuntu the touchscreen works, most things- sound, wifi, network, etc. works. Windows 8.1 works 'fine' for most things. Video playback in 1080p is smooth. Dual monitor setup is possible, with second screen output in 1080p via VGA.

Cons: Trackpad finger motions (2 finger scroll) under Ubuntu does not work. Seems some RAM is shared, as only 3.2GB shows up under Win8.1 and Ubuntu. FreeBSD does not install well because main partition is in GPT and Grub2 does not boot fbsd for some reason. I got Solaris 11 installed without issues but startx is blank, needs further work. No other BSDs would install because its GPT. Overall laptop is slow under Win 8.1 with Chrome and multiple window, but with that CPU it should be expected. The bottleneck is likely in the hard drive, hopefully can be replaced with SSD soon.

Other Thoughts: Overall a decent laptop. I would've loved a bit more CPU power and SSD drives, but SSD may be possible soon. Dual boot for me was a must, so fact that Ubuntu works with touchscreen is great. A bit sad that FreeBSD would not boot, but maybe its my grub settings. If you re-install everything into MBR instead of GPT you can get whatever OS you want, FreeBSD/OpenBSD/NetBSD included, but then you won't have Win8.1 (although Win7 is possible). So something to look forward to!

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Small
light weight

Cons: See Other thoughts

Other Thoughts: The 1st unit that I got could not hold charge, 0% no matter how long I charge it, even the window is showing plugged in and charging, so the battery probably have problem. So RMA.

Got the 2nd one now, everything is fine so I can actually use it. Due to the laptop itself is so small, all the ports are very close to each other, the USB3 and the HDMI ports are very close to the power port, some USB flash drive will not fit unless you unplug the power cable. The power port is between the USB 3.0 and the HDMI port, you need to turn the power cable around when you need to access these two ports, if you need to use both, you will have to leave the power cable pointing up or down. Not a big deal for me. After all you are buying it for its size.

This little laptop/netbook is actually pretty fast, this is great for traveling.

3 out of 5 eggsIt's preetty good

Pros: Small, light, compact! Free sleeve! Runs Win 8.1 (see below)! I actually wanted it to use as a tether to my NIkon Camera. It's going to be GREAT! It also runs Office 365 (not included) pretty well too.

Cons: Out of the box it's running a one year old load of Win 8.0. Show no fear! Disable all the Defender and Firewall settings and start a VERY long Windows Update cycle! Use hardwired internet if you can. At the end of about 100 (really!) You can then go to the app store and now get the FREE Windows 8.1 upgrade then the small list of those updates. Plan on a long time and don't forget to disable the real time Defender settings or it will be FAR longer (enable when done).

You can't do hardware upgrades on this box! Don't try!

Other Thoughts: When you get done with all this updating it's actually a pretty decent compact device and you'll be fully bonded and have a personal relationship. Don't wimp out on all the updates or it's not that great. After you are done it is pretty good but it's not an AMD FX 8 core processor! The 4 GB ram is about all you can really use. You are buying this because you want a decent price!

4 out of 5 eggsVery Good Basic Laptop

Pros: Bright Monitor, Good Touch Accuracy
Good Keyboard
Good Overall Performance
5 Hour movie, Internet, Quick Charge
Good connectivity
Light, good for travel

Cons: Trackpad is finicky
Harddrive is small & slow
Window 8, unpatched
Strange hardrive partition

Other Thoughts: After this computer is updated to Win 8.1 and fully patched it runs great, way better than netbooks of old. The update process will operate in the background and make the computer seem like a brick until finished, it takes a long time. You can speed the process by opening control panel and manually updating windows.

Windows 8.1 is really slick once you understand it, long learning curve for complete understanding. I far prefer it over android for overall use.

I highly recommend this laptop for internet, email, basic gaming, basic computer uses. This form factor with windows has great advantages over tablet with io7 or Android

Thanks

1 out of 5 eggsVery poor performance

Pros: Build is nice, good quality keyboard.
Touch screen is responsive

Cons: Very Very slow.
It is not able to even open the internet explorer without crashing or lagging.
It's not able to perform any basic tasks.

Other Thoughts: I do not recommend this laptop for anyone. You will be extremely frustrated at how unreasonably slow it is when you try to perform any task. Maybe I just received a defective one but I highly doubt it. I have used many netbooks other low end laptops, they do not lag and crash out of the box.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for My Purposes

Pros: So far, love this little thing, goes anywhere and just works. Great for all basics like email, browsing web, word, excel, and even better for going from one meeting to the next.

Technically, adequate ram for multitasking and hard drive space for installing needed apps and media files.

Touch screen is great, works well.

Other great features:
- HDMI and VGA outputs
- USB 3.0 port
- Ethernet port for higher speed networking (swing door closes to maintain slim profile)
-Tablet style with keyboard
-Great battery Life
-Ultra light and thin

Everyone in the office is quite impressed with it's capabilities.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I am spoiled by my ASUS-G750, so nice to have features would be:
-SSD for more power savings, extending battery life and little boost in speed.

-Backlighted Keyboard

But all around good value anyway, just love it!
