1 out of 5 eggsHard Drive Failed After 1 Month, ASUS Customer Service is the Absolute Worst

Pros: great specs

Cons: hard drive failure, asus customer service is, from start to finish, the worst i've ever dealt with. See below.

Other Thoughts: One month after dropping $2,000 on a top-of-the-line computer that I hoped would last me at least four years, my UX301LA suddenly stopped recognizing the bootloaders in either the Ubuntu or Windows 8.1 OSes I had installed. I took it to a local shop for testing, and they found one of the SSD drives had failed, and there were some problems with the hard drive controller on the motherboard. So I went to ASUS' website to see if there were any local ASUS service centers. There was one not far from me, so I dropped it off there, and they said I would have my computer back after about 2 weeks.

Fast forward a month and a half, and my machine still isn't fixed. At one point, I got a call from the service center, telling me that it was fixed and I could pick it up. The store representative booted it up, and said everything was now working fine, except for one little thing. He said it required to reboots in a row for successful booting into the OS, and proceeded to demonstrate this. Of course, the machine failed to boot, even after about 10 reboots. In other words, the ASUS service center representative was trying to get me to take my machine back after he had clearly failed to fix it.

Fed up with this service center, I called ASUS directly and told them my situation. Then, the ASUS representative on the phone had the gall to admonish me for following his own website's advice, and told me I "should have called ASUS first." I immediately filled out a complaint on ASUS' website about their customer service, and was informed they would get back to me within 48 hours. That was five days ago. From start to finish, dealing with ASUS customer service, at every level, has been one of the most unpleasant and stressful experiences in recent memory. Up until now, I had been a loyal ASUS customer, buying from them a previous netbook, a motherboard, a monitor, a wifi card, and telling both my parents to buy ASUS notebooks when they were on the market (which they did). At this point, however, I don't think I'll ever buy another ASUS product again.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsSmoke'n Hot . . .with issues

Pros: Great CPU with IRIS Graphics . . .
Fast SSD, but in RAID . . . .
Pretty efficient keyboard for such a shallow device . . .
Fast, Furious, and Efficient!

Cons: SSD . . . .very limited and costly replacement and/or upgrade.
SSD . . . .exceptionally limited availability on retail shelves.
The SSD is of the M.2 variety (stands for 20mm wide) with NGFF size (Next Generation Form Factor), but they come in varying lengths that are very unit/notebook specific.
A few models/sizes are: 2028, 2042,2060, and 2080 with the last two characters representing length . . . .hence the AUS UX301 series laptops use the M.2.2060 NFGG in 128GB x 2 and 256GB x2 their respective models.

The SSD in the UX301 is user replaceable, but appears that ASUS (at least 4 now) has the M.2 2060 production controlled for their benefit making them hard to come by unless one happens to fins a used one from a salvage dawg somewhere.

I personally would remove the RAID Array as well since it doesn't affect the machine performance that much, and provides for a non-recoverable device should one of either drive have a failure.

Other Thoughts: This is personal experience that I am sharing . . .and want to add that a back-up even two weeks out of date is better than no back-up at all!

I have since obtained a readily available M.2 2080 NGFF and put it in a USB 3.0 enclosure (specifically designed for the M.2 20xx device) to use as a continuous backup device.

Still, and overall, a great laptop.
