5 out of 5 eggsAn incredible deal

Pros: This laptop is extremely powerful for its price. It runs just about every game at medium-high settings, at native resolution. The graphics are actually an HD7660G + HD7670M Crossfire, despite what the specs say. Add in an SSD to that and you've got yourself a full-fledged gaming laptop.
Oh, and the 8 GB of RAM are a real nice treat too.
The laptop is nice looking with a kind of textured carbon finish.

Cons: Being refurbished, I had a few little problems with my unit, but decided not to return it. The disk drive had its button physically stuck (but can still be opened from the Windows Explorer), and the "A" keycap came off easily. Other than that, I have no cons for this product.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdated info about this product

Pros: This is an update to my previous post. I was having problems with the wi-fi and ordered another adapter to plug it in and find out that I was still having problems with signal. So I ended up doing a complete laptop teardown. I had to even break down the screen. What I found is that my wifi antenna cable was getting pinched in the screen hinge. This was making one of the antennas useless. Thankfully it was just pinched and not broken. When I carefully laid it back down where it was supposed to go and reassembled everything, I found out everything worked as it should. The wifi in this system is actually better than most high end adapters. It also works wonderful in linux too, better than most wifi adapter do with the linux kernels. This adapter uses the atheros ar9485 chip.

As for the awful keyboard I found a replacement for it on e bay for 35 which resolves the odd keyboard layout.

The one thing I am having a hard time finding anywhere is the 2nd drive caddy. I really want to install a 240gb mushkin chronos deluxe drive to this system to really make windows fast, and put my linux versions on the hd as well as media files. I will not get the optical drive caddy because I want to keep the use of my optical bay.

So far -

Laptop 445
Keyboard 35
SSD 145
Caddy ? (about 50 i assume)

Will end up being about 675 total on a machine that is very future proofed. Plenty of power and space in every respect. Other machines I was looking at would have cost almost twice as much for not much more performance than this.

Cons: Having to do a complete tear down of my system to fix the wifi antennas. I would expect more from Asus. I know slip ups happen, but this should have been caught by QC.

Other Thoughts: This system will last as my main portable for a good 4-5 years. Very happy with that. After which it will serve as a backup system in case my next system happens to go down.

The battery life on this is pretty decent. Even with full screen brightness and watching netflix or hulu I get well over 3 hours. If I turn down the brightness by about 15% and websurf I get a good 4 1/2 hours out of it. You could eek more out if you turned down the brightness more and disabled wifi. Wifi consumes a lot of battery power. I was able to play Aion (an MMORPG) on full brightness for just over 2 hours.

Even though this battery is nice and strong, I still would love to see an extended capacity battery for this unit. 2nd batteries are pretty inexpensive though if you want a backup.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty decent but aweful keyboard

Pros: a10-4600m apu, 8gb 1600mhz ddr3, 2 x usb 3.0, 750gb hd, dual graphics (7660g + 7670m), 17.3" screen, hdmi, windows 7 compatible, grade A refurb. Those are the highlights of this system, and pretty generous for the 445 price tag. There are some definite cons though. But before I get to those let me say some more about the pros.

Another big benefit is the 2nd 2.5" hard drive bay. You will have to purchase an additional hard drive caddy in order to upgrade. Because of how the caddy mounts in the laptop you do not need to worry about it being 7mm or 9mm height.

WEI Scores (Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64)

CPU - 6.9
Memory - 7.3
Aero - 6.7
Gaming - 6.7
HD - 5.9

As anyone knows WEI is not a good way to tell actual performance, but it does give some insight into how well a system will run. For the price this system is not to be beat. If you can overcome the shortcomings of it.

Cons: The keyboard layout is absolutely awful! Keys are in strange places and keys that should be larger are smaller and in you find yourself hitting keys you should not. I work constantly with many different laptops as I am a service tech. Very few laptop keyboards are THIS awkward. The two worst keys are your right shift button which is terrible small and I keep hitting the button next to it, and the return and backspace keys are a bit odd too I keep missing those some too. Though not as often as the right shift key that is driving me nuts. HP laptop keyboard in on the 17.3" laptops seem to be the best keyboard I have run across, other than the MSI Steel Series keyboards which are $1200+ laptops.

The other major con is the wireless adapter which when installing Windows 7 is utterly worthless. You also can not use the driver from the Asus website which is version 9.?? it will not even attach to your router, you need to hunt and peck for version 10.0.0.222. Though the utterly frustrating part about that is that even 5 feet from my router I only have 80% signal strength and from 30ft away I have less than 20% signal strength and it will not connect. I have to order a mini wifi card to replace it! I'm very disappointed in this.

*Not a con but know if you install Windows 7 or do a fresh install you need to go to ATI's website and download the drivers for the 7670m. If you download the APU drivers it will not support the dual graphics, only the drivers for the 7670m will support the dual graphics. Just be aware.

Other Thoughts: What really upsets me are people who act like they know what they are talking about, and say they have a tech level of high or somewhat high when it is clear they only have somewhat low to average tech knowledge.

First off you can not disable UEFI by disabling secure boot. You are only disabling secure boot nothing else. And it is UEFI not EFI, anyone with a 'high' tech knowledge knows this. EFI was the 'beta'/test version of UEFI. UEFI is standard now and what is used. You can switch over to 'legacy BIOS mode' in some UEFI, but you are still using UEFI. UEFI is here to stay and BIOS is being phased out. There are many reasons for this, namely BIOS is over 20 years old and obsolete for the computers of today. BIOS is built on 16-bit architecture which means you can only use 16-bit or higher architecture with it. The same is true of UEFI it is 64-bit architecture and you can only use 64-bit or higher OSs with it. Windows 7 64-bit or newer, Linux 64-bit work on UEFI. BIOS has a hard drive size limitation of 2.2TB, so any bootable partition can only be that size or smaller. And since we are now into 3 and 4TB hard drives BIOS simply had to be replaced. There are other issues as well but this one of the main reasons for the UEFI push. There are also many security vulnerabilities with BIOS that needed to be fixed as well.

Also Microsoft is right you do own your own key. That is part of the OEM agreement that Microsoft has with manufacturers. That you own the license once you purchase the machine it was installed on. Though it is tied only to that machine and can not be transferred. The key can not be manufactured into the motherboard for many reasons, this is false. It could be potentially hard encoded into the BIOS however. In which case Asus should be able to retrieve it for you at no additional cost to you. Though $100 does seem right for a hard drive replacement. If you were buying a hard drive and a Windows 8 key again you would be paying in the range of $200.

This is a decent laptop if you can overcome the keyboard layout and the terrible wifi adapter. I'm going to be using an external keyboard and mouse most of the time, as well as getting a new mini wifi adapter which will make me a lot happier.

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far Awsome

Pros: this took me some time to find on the site but was i every happy. This has a nice big display with ample resolution for games and movies. the speakers are significantly better than my previous machine. It comes with a dual video card system working in tandem or individually for the best of both worlds, gaming and movies as well as good battery life and low power consumption if needed. Full keyboard, and built in web cam. The benchmarks are close to many machines at a higher price, also has space for a second HD or SSD which is suggested as that is the slowest piece on the machine. I just ordered a 7200 rpm drive myself. i also like the HDMI and VGA output so i can so i can connect to other monitors and TV's.

Cons: not very many. I prefer win 7-64bit however win 8 is good for my uses and is 64 bit as well and really you can always downgrade if necessary. the other is that according to my research there is an 8 gig max on the ram, it would be nice to have the option to upgrade to 16 gigs as much of the ram is used for the video processor.

Other Thoughts: Like i said i would suggest an SSD or 7200 rpm drive. great performance for the price point. Haven't tried many high demanding games but what i have seen does impress me for a laptop. This is at least 2-4 times faster than my old machine which was also an asus and lasted me more than 5 years with little to no complications. Buying refurbished is always a gamble hence the decreased price, however newegg has always treated me well in the past, i guess that is why i have been a customer for almost a decade now.

3 out of 5 eggsadvanced users beware

Pros: Easy to add second sata drive internally.
Get three eggs because of the hard ware on it .

Cons: Cons:
1) No win 8 install disc or the oem offering to sell the back up discs. So make sure you makea full backup of your hard drive and make recovery discs before you try to alter the computer.

my win 8 oem licensed product key is contained in the motherboard im told by asus. So if my hard drive is broken, im required to send this laptop back to asus and pay for one way shipping to replace the hd and os withon 90 days. If it is outside of warranty, i would be required to pay $100 plus dollar for the hd and os. I was told by microdoft that i do own the right to my l license key and asus is required to give me the product key. I spoke to a supervisor at asus and im told that they would not provide me my product key and the company denies the fact there is one fore the laptop. I asked well how can i get product support from micosoft if i dont have my produuct license key. Asus had no answer for me...... now i have to buy another operating system that comes with a disc and product key (pretty upset about that).

2) i do not like the switch to the new bios (efi?). Thankfully you can disable it by turning off secure boot. From what i read, doing this will make win 8 unbootable, so use caution.

3) the refurbished laptop has a cheap feel to the removable keyboard but it still works. So i guess i can live with it.

Other Thoughts: Overall im really disappointed in the aoftware on this laptop. Well atleast i only paid under $500 for this. Advanced users beware of this lemon.

1 out of 5 eggsWindows 8 Failure

Pros: Clean laptop, big screen and in good physical condition. Newegg get's 3-stars for customer service. Easy RMA on the site, quick shipping label, dropped off at UPS yesterday and it will be delivered back to Newegg today. Can't ask for more than that. But huge disappointment to get a bad machine, especially since I took a chance on a refurb.

Cons: Very disappointed that Windows 8 wouldn't run. Machine kept going into "repair" mode when Windows tried to load. Hardware seemed perfect, but I give ASUS 1-star for not quality controlling the Windows install. This isn't newegg's fault.

Other Thoughts: Spent 10 minutes on the phone with ASUS. Since I know ASUS monitors these posts from time to time and will respond with the usual "sorry you had a problem" let me first say, sorry doesn't cut it. I have many ASUS products (mostly mobo's) and had nothing but great experiences with everyone one of them. Not booting the machine to see if the software was installed successfully is simply unacceptable from a company of your caliber.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Lap Top

Pros: Very fast, Very nice screen. All associated soft ware to run this lap top was previously loaded and it runs great. The sound is also fantastic.

Cons: This one was refurbished; no disks. Not a problem considering the coin I saved.

Other Thoughts: New-egg has never let me down, I was skeptical about buying a refurbished lap top, but not any more. I saved a ton and received a great product.

5 out of 5 eggsbest laptop under $1000

Pros: Stable and powerful, pure AMD power. doesn't lag doing anything, and has a nice runtime between charges.good onboard wifi not a 'toy' or relegated to websurfing. this thing is a beast. it will work, watch movies, and even play games just as well as my a6 6400k desktop. lightweight for its power, excellend hd screen

Cons: none really although extended capacity aftermarket batteries are hard to find.

Other Thoughts: would be nice if ASUS would offer a extended battery on their website. other than that you cant go wrong with this machine. it even has an extra hdd slot so you can add a wd black edition (or a ssd) to hold your games for faster load times.
