3 out of 5 eggsLost some loyalty to ASUS here!

Pros: Less than $500.
Intel i3 2.4Ghz x2 (w/HT)
>4GB RAM
17" screen
USB 3.0

Cons: Windows 8 is a step backwards for people that are used to windows and its previous start menu layout.

Does not come with AI Recovery Burner. Meaning you cannot easily make DVD's that allow you to bring your laptop back to working condition after HDD failure. Don't get rid of something that works if your company has "persistent perfection."

Had a screw loose. Literally rattling around inside.

Other Thoughts: Found the screw when I went to take out the HDD and replace it with a 240GB OCZ vector 150. Luckily that SSD came with Acronis True Image software. Unluckily theere was a screw laying ontop of the HDD when I took off the access panel, then when I booted my tower with it in the first time it wanted to run check disk. All I had to do was drive 40 miles to hook up the two drives to a tower (was counting on AI Recovery Burner), install and activate Acronis2013 and do a clone.

Taking out software that was good and increased the useful life of a device was my first let down. Would have let it go as a Windows 8 thing or just that maybe it only came with ROG stuff. But then the screw just really let me down as far as thinking ASUS stood apart.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize if we'll be loosing you as a loyal ASUS customer due to WINDOWS 8, a loose screw and a missing AI Recovery software. WINDOWS 8 does come integrated with a Recovery Media Creator that allows you to create a copy of the system image using an external USB drive. The lost screw is an isolated case since all ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections. If you need assistance sending the unit in for warranty service, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N140743699 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

2 out of 5 eggsASUS X75A

Pros: You can't beat the price. 17.3" screen is very nice - love having all that real estate. It stays incredibly cool and is quite.

Cons: Windows 8, Windows 8, Windows 8. Minus 3 eggs for this. Haven't even been able to use the computer. Have tried to apply updates and it gets stuck. The first time I attempted to apply updates, I was lucky enough to get stuck with the "Failure Configuring Windows Updates" loop. I let this go on for a few hours. Had to force a shut down and go into recovery and reset the system. Tried a few things and still can not apply updates, currently stuck at 15%.

The track pad is annoying, because the left and right buttons are integrated and "live", meaning that you if you use the left button to click, and your finger wiggles a little bit, you move the cursor, but there is an easy fix - just use a mouse instead of track pad.

The key board feels very flimsy, but is fine.

Other Thoughts: If you don't care about touch screen and blue tooth, seriously consider this.

Really wanted to check out Windows 8.1, but will probably go back to Windows 7.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Tim,

I apologize if you are experiencing difficulty upgrading to WINDOWS 8.1 and using the multi-touch features of the touchpad. In order to upgrade to WINDOWS 8.1, please install all recommended WINDOWS Updates before upgrading to WINDOWS 8.1 before using the system. We recommend using a LAN connection to speed up the update process. In regards to the touchpad, please allow some time to get use to the multi-touch function of the pad. Also, try updating the ASUS Smart Gesture utility and try to configure the touchpad within the application. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N140743757 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

3 out of 5 eggsASUS X75A

Pros: Good solid PC with good display and larger keyboard

Cons: This PC will connect to my router, but drops the connection from time to time. I have another laptop which connects, and is solid. I have also found it will not connect to some public WiFis. I think the problem is some routers do not fully support the protocol provided by the Ralink driver. The sound will stop sometimes after being used. A reboot will make it return. So I went to the ASUS site and downloaded the most current drivers for WLAN and Audio. Neither issue was resolved. So I downloaded the Atheros WLAN driver, replaced the Ralink, and the dropping has stopped. I downloaded the VIA Audio and replaced the Realtek, and the sound is now solid. Also I had set the Power Options to Balanced, and it continued to be switched back to Power4Gear. I discovered there is a Power4Gear Hybrid Utility causing that so I disabled it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Mr. Tom P,

It's good to know that you find the latop a solid PC with good display and larger keyboard. I'm glad that you were able to resolve the wireless LAN and audio problem, and thank you for sharing it to other users that may visit the product review site. 2 out of 5 eggsI don't quite understand.

Pros: Look, the laptop is fantastic looking- massive, with a beautiful display; all I really wanted in terms of its physical appearance. The first feeling I had was that if I walked into a business meeting and pulled this out of my pack, everyone would wonder what it is that I had in store.

Cons: Unfortunately, however, from the second the Windows 8 installation was finished- that is, after the 4-5 hour setup- I was immediately troubled with a faulty track-pade, HORRENDOUS download speed (average 90 kbps pre-update), and physical memory that literally felt like 1gb. I am 25 years old and I have been using computer since I was roughly seven years old. This literally felt like someone slightly better than my 1GB RAM "Ultra System" of 1999, with a massive headache. The system literally feels faulty. I can't actually prove my credentials; however, I have shopped with NewEgg before and I have been quite satisfied (aaronmyc@buffalo.edu). I am really excited for Windows8-8.1 which I had in both occasions of my terrible experience, but know that my misfortune was due to a fault system. This model may have received quite nice reviews but the one I got was a dud. 8/8 is not 8/9, sorry.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's good to know that you like the physical appearance of the laptop. I apologize if you are experiencing stability issue and unrepsonsive touchpad on the laptop. In order to improve system stability and performance, and touchpad responsiveness, please install all recommended WINDOWS Updates and upgrade to WINDOWS 8.1 before using the system. We recommend using a LAN connection to speed up the update process. In addition to resolving the touchpad related issue, please try updating the ASUS Smart Gesture utility and try to configure the touchpad within the application. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N140707585on the subject line.

2 out of 5 eggsNot impressed

Pros: Have not even got past the updates to evaluate the pros.

Cons: I get my necessary software loaded (quickbooks, office, and am prompted to restart. After a restart, I am greeted with a message saying "configuring windows options". Cool, must be an update. Well after 45 mins stuck @ 15 percent, I start getting a little concerned. Long story short I have to do a system restore, which means I have to re install all of the software that took me 4 hours to install. Not happy about that, I need a machine that just works.

Second, my machine seems to have some serious screen uniformity issues. The contrast is pretty messed up at the edges of the screen and basically has one small sweet spot while the rest of the screens contrast is totally washed out.

The software issue i can deal with even though it's a huge pain, but Please tell me its only my machine with the screen issue,

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for the positive comment. I apologize if you received the laptop with a screen related issues. All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspection. 5 out of 5 eggsAwesome... Fix info inside

Pros: CHEAP! Fast.. well built Love it! Installed an SSD and it boots into windows 8 ready to use in 9 seconds.

Cons: Not a Con but keep this in mind! I read some negative reviews on other sites about keyboard issues and mouse issues. When I was doing a fresh load the track pad was horrible and the keyboard failed to register a lot of my key presses because the track pad would move the attention of my key strokes. Installing the Asus Track pad driver fixed ALL of those issues. If you experience keyboard or trackpad issues just uninstall the trackpad driver then install the latest Asus track pad driver. It fixed everything.

Other Thoughts: Only other problem was Windows update failed and it's stuck reverting back to before the updates. I am going to reload it again to resolve the issue. I don't blame the laptop. I have been a tech for years and have seen updates cause issues on perfectly fine machines.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice!

Pros: Fast, full size keyboard, great display and runs great!
Great hardware for the money, very few offer 6GB of memory and the Intel Core i3.

Cons: I wish there was a little more room between the USB ports and I wish one was located further to the rear so when using a mouse it's not so close to where your working, I'm afraid I'm going to knock it sideways with my coffee or paperwork. Updating to 8.1 takes a bit since you're suppose to install all the updates (and recommended updates) before moving to 8.1, a bit time consuming. I got this for my wife and she loves it!

Other Thoughts: I suspect the reason this package is so affordable is the user must update to Windows 8.1. I doubt you'll be able to find anything, from any manufacturer, with this kind of hardware that has Windows 8.1 factory installed. I'll update if anything goes south on me.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent computer. 1 issue

Pros: Fast, love the instant on, big display, keyboard is well thought out.

Cons: mouse/trackpad was jumpy and jittery out of the box. I could barely use the mouse. Uninstalled the Asus trackpad utility. Rebooted. Reinstalled utility. Rebooted. Now it works great. No other complaints so far.

Other Thoughts: Using this for AutoCAD for school. Maxed out memory with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148733. Super fast now, easy install.

5 out of 5 eggsASUS X75A-DH32 Intel Core i3 3110M (2.40GHz) 6GB Memory 500GB HDD 17.3" Notebook Windows 8 64-bit

Pros: Lightweight, huge screen, runs flawlessly like every other Asus I've purchased

Cons: Short battery life (due to screen size this was expected), Win 8 is awful...an absolute disgrace

Other Thoughts: I purchased for my wife who is back in college, but I've been using it the past week after my work laptop (HP) bit the dust. I'm in awe of this Asus, wish work would buy me one of these instead...and run Win 7 on it.
