1 out of 5 eggsWouldn't buy again

Pros: Thin, attractive design. Faster than expected given 5400rpm drive

Cons: Purchasing this refurbed was a bad idea. When we got the laptop, Windows 8 wouldn't activate, stating that the number had already been activated. Asus support told us to reboot and press F9, which would've allowed a repair/reinstall. Except the machine got stuck at that menu. Called Support again and we were told to RMA the unit. We were also told that they don't send pre-paid shipping labels for refurbished laptops. So we had to spend $30 to send back a laptop we had just bought days ago that wasn't properly refurbished.

As for the unit itself, I hate the international keyboard layout. The enter and shift keys are too small. The partitioning scheme is really weird, with the 32gb flash as a separate partition with nothing on it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for the positive comment that you have provided to the laptop. I certainly understand your concern regarding the WINDOWS activation issue and the keyboard layout. ASUS does not provide WINDOWS activation or product key. Please contact Newegg directly for a replacement unit or send the unit in for service to reset it to factory settings. If you need further assistance, please email me at and write down service# 3714990 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggsBeautiful

Pros: Very sleek design, looks brand new. It's very thin while maintaining an extremely large screen. Build quality is very good, I was thinking about going for something lighter (2lb) this laptop is 4 or 5 I think, which is still very light. The weight is increased by the metal (aluminum?) shell, which is well worth it since it looks very luxe. Came with some bloatware, but that was removed almost instantly, and the performance is exactly what I was expecting (nothing too fancy, but not too shabby either)

Cons: GPU (Intel 4000) is very lackluster, the numpad on the side takes some time to get adjusted to.

Other Thoughts: Well worth the price, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this laptop to anyone.

4 out of 5 eggsA good deal for the tech savy

Pros: You get a solid ultra notebook chassis at a rock bottom price that can be upgraded for high-end performance.

Cons: Comes with Windows 8 and the user info is severely lacking.
If I wasn't very tech savvy I probably would have taken this back.

Other Thoughts: a) I downgraded to Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.
b) Replaced the mSATA 24 Gb cache drive with a full size mSATA III at 128 Gb to use as my OS drive
c) Replaced the stock Toshiba 5400 RPM SATA II drive with a a Western Digital SATA III at 7200 RPM
d) Replaced the stock memory (6 GB of Samsung PC 1600 at 11-11-11-31) with 8Gb GSkill PC 1600 at 9-9-9-28
Result: Win Exp Index= 6.5

5 out of 5 eggsgreat value for the price

Pros: The laptop is able to run games on unreal engine 3 smoothly, which is what I wanted; so for the price I paid (480$CAD), its a very good value.

The keyboard layout is ISO (french-canadian labellings, exactly what I wanted) and the numpad is very nice to have. Good amount of I/O ports (VGA is there if you need old interface support).

SSD caching is great, but I don't have a reference to compare with, so I cannot tell the amplitude of the difference it makes, but the response time is good.

Cons: none so far.
