2 out of 5 eggsjust so so

Pros: The performance is ok, i3 3120M is powerful among the dual-cores,
the HD4000 graphic card is ok for normal use ,too. You can even play some mainstream game with low effects settings.

Cons: The build quality is really shameful for ASUS family, I know this is a entry level computer, but the build quality is really below $350 rank laptop.

The screen is terrible, too. The view angle is really narrow, like only 60 degrees. Very normal TN screen, or even bellow average.

Other Thoughts: Should looking for Lenovo or Toshiba refurbished deals.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsFailure configuring Windows

Pros: No Dents

Cons: been running updates for 3 hours.

"failure configuring updates reverting changes do not turn off your computer " - for the last hour. - Still not recovered.

Other Thoughts: I wish windows was updated during refurbishment.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize if you are experiencing issues and taking longer time to install WINDOWS Update with the laptop. In order to improve and speed up the download and update process, we recommend using a LAN connection. Also, please verify internet service is working properly. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3690283 on the subject line.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Value, No Factory Reset

Pros: Great machine, love the fast wake up feature. Was easy to update windows then free upgrade to Win 8.1. Came with a paper saying that the refurb process wipes the hard drive completely, removing the factory partition with the image that allows resetting the operating system to factory original config.

Cons: Came with a paper saying that the refurb process wipes the hard drive completely, removing the factory partition with the image that allows resetting the operating system to factory original configuration.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Made by Asus, which is a plus, decently fast, perfect for what I need, and excellent for the price. Average battery life, battery charges quickly.

Cons: Silly placement for the mouse pad, as most people are right handed, you wouldn't think they'd put it on the right. Actually, a left handed person would mark this as a pro. The keyboard is also on the left, which is silly.

also Windows 8. Biggest con for a new computer.

Other Thoughts: LED's can be bright at night when you're trying to sleep. If I'd known this, I probably wouldn't have gotten it, so I figure some of you would want to consider this. You know who you are, using your electronic device to look at reviews on Newegg.

1 out of 5 eggsBroken out of the box and support is awful

Pros: It was cheap and light.

Cons: - The mouse cursor randomly resets itself every 1-5 minutes. If I'm typing, suddenly the cursor will move and I'll be typing on another part of the page. Think of how annoying that is every 1-5 minutes. (And I know how to type and not rest my palm on the touchpad.)

- It freezes if you try to move between windows by clicking on the bottom bar. If you have two browser windows and you hover your mouse over the icon on the bottom bar, the system locks and you have to do turn it off and on again.

- It freezes randomly. I haven't seen a pattern for this yet, but every 2-3 hours, it just freezes up and you have to power cycle. Since I work online, I'm usually rebooting 4-5 times per day.

- The hard drive partitioned itself. This could be a Windows 8.1 issue, but the system crashed one day and, upon recovery, created a hidden partition with over half of the hard drive's space.

Other Thoughts: As you can see, it's not just a problem with a space bar. What's worse? ASUS technical support has been horrible. I spoke with them three times.

1) The tech gave me instructions to unpartition my drive. I followed them to the letter (I know what I'm doing) and it crashed my hard drive. I had to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows, losing a lot of personal data in the process. (It's hard to back stuff up when your laptop keeps freezing.)

2) The tech didn't give me any help. He/She just gave me two 800 numbers to call. Guess what? Neither number worked.

3) The tech told me that, by now, the 90 day warranty had expired and, even though all of these issues came out of the box, I would have to pay at least $140.00 USD, plus shipping, and wait 5-7 business days.

In other words, the techs gave me bad responses which waited out the warranty period. Now they want to charge me to make their product work normally.

This was my first ASUS product--and my last. I can handle stuff that's not perfect, but between fundamental problems and support being worse than a waste of time, I will never buy another ASUS product again.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear William,

I apologize for the inconvenience this may have causes you. I certainly understand the difficulty not hitting the touchpad accidentally while typing. Please allow some time to get use to it or you can disable the touchpad temporarily while typing by pressing the hotkeys "FN + F9". It is recommend to install all recommended WINDOWS Update and upgrade to WINDOWS 8.1 in order to improve system performance and stability. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3559149 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggsRE: More than expected

Pros: After updating to Windows 8.1, the OS is usable.

Cons: Seems to show finger prints easily on the semi-gloss outside finish of the computer.

Other Thoughts: This is a followup review, addendum if you will, of my other review on this laptop. I purchased a Samsung EVO 128GB SSD to put in this machine. After the install, this laptop boots in 3 seconds flat. From power on, to using the OS. 3 seconds.

So let it be known that a SSD drive is a HUGE upgrade for this machine. It is a little tricky to open up the computer and install it, but I highly suggest replacing the original hard drive with a SSD unit.

4 out of 5 eggsMore than expected

Pros: Slim design, surprisingly quick, great screen, keyboard. I really can't complain about the computer from a take it out of the box and use it standpoint. It feels light and solid, opens nicely, has sleek LED lights on the front corner of it that can be seen while the lid is closed. Has one USB 3 port, HDMI among others. The touch panel for the track pad is nice, smooth and large. Is sensitive and supports two finger scrolling as well as a left mouse "click" when you push down on the touch pad.

Cons: Windows 8. - It does not come updated, setup or configured at all. In its current form, the OS is as it was new when released in 2013 which means there is no start menu, and you have to down the ~1GB of updates all on your own. It comes with McAfee which I consider to be a HUGE con. The first thing I did is uninstall McAfee and install Avast Free antivirus.

Other Thoughts: My computer came clean as a whistle, you really couldn't tell that it had been used before. There was still the protective wrapper around the power brick, and the cables were wound up nicely. This computer comes with literally the power cable, battery and unit its self. There is no owners manual or any documentation from Asus. Newegg ships a paper in the box telling you how to setup the restore disc, but that's it. The unit was packaged well with two foam wedge/holders on either side of the laptop, and a protective felt type cloth bag around the laptop its self. My battery came fully charged, and the unit fired up and immediately went into windows 8 configuration.
