4 out of 5 eggsI like it and you can't get anything better for the price!

Pros: Great laptop for the price, you really can't find anything better. This was on sale for a few days for $580 so i jumped on the opportunity. So far so good. I happen to be one of the people who enjoy windows 8/8.1 so i don't know why people knock this laptop for that reason. Get use to it its really not that complicated. Also its almost impossible to find a laptop now a days running windows 7 with any decent specs, so don't punish ASUS, Microsoft is the one pushing Windows 8 and they are doing it for all laptop companies not just ASUS.

Great Keyboard

I really like the touch pad, some people don't, that's fine its a preference thing.

Screen looks amazing!

Mine came with two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 port

Light weight for its size, perfect for lugging around

I haven't played games yet on it but I'm sure the processor can handle them great, Everything seems really zippy with this processor.

Cons: Battery life is not very good. I get anywhere between 1.5 - 3 hours depending on what you are doing.

Battery is not removable. not a fan of this because i plan on having the laptop a long time and know that the battery will dwindle. I am going to buy an "external laptop battery" because i will be using this for school. you can find some that holds 20,000 mAh - 32,000 mAh. It should charge the laptop a couple times. Not a bad solution!

Fan runs a lot but I guess that just means its keeping everything cool.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I'm glad that you have found the product a great latop for the price. I do understand your concern regarding the battery life and no easy access to replace it if needed. In order to improve battery life, please try to do a battery calibration manually by draining the battery completely without the AC adapter connected then charge it fully without the system being used or power on. Also, disabling services and devices not needed will help prolong the battery life. Although there's no easy access to the battery, it is replaceable by unscrewing the bottom case. However, opening the bottom cover voids warranty coverage. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N140717659 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

Rodel

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: > Light Weight (5.1lbs)
> Attractive looking (finish and casing does not feel cheap or flimsy)
> 1920x1080 display (not common for laptops in this price range)
> AMD A10-5750M CPU is faster than I expected.
> Dedicated Graphics card (albeit a low-range card)
> Keyboard is very responsive and the keys have a very satisfying "click" to them

Cons: > Windows 8 may be a deal breaker for some people. Personally, I am not bothered by it much as there are programs to revert the start menu to the classic windows look.
> The 5400RPM HD is pretty slow. You can always upgrade to a SSD though.
> Battery life is not great. I can usually get about 1.5 - 2 hours on the battery alone with light use (web browsing, music, youtube).

Other Thoughts: I would not recommend buying this laptop for the SOLE purpose of gaming. I bought this particular model because I required a computer for school/work but wanted something with the ability to play a few games at decent settings (specifically World of Warcraft, Bioshock, Skyrim, etc). When using the laptop in dual graphics mode (GPU + APU) I can play WoW on moderate settings at 60fps (it goes down to about 30fps when raiding). It's definitely playable but I've been spoiled by the graphic capability I get with my desktop PC. I also had difficulty deciding between the AMD and the intel versions. The intel version technically has a better CPU but honestly, if you look at the benchmarks, it's not THAT much better. I ultimately chose the AMD version because of the beautiful display.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Kat,

4 out of 5 eggsVery clean

Pros: The CPU is fast and the display is clean and crisp. I hooked up to an external HDMI monitor and the laptop display is better than the Asus VW198T monitor, which is a definite plus.

The keyboard is nicely spaced and allows decent typing even for my fat-finger method. Although I purchased this PC for work, I wanted something that would handle CAD and 3D rendering, hence the Radeon graphics requirement. RAM is decent and work flawlessly. I also enjoy the 10-key number pad.

Extra software wasn't too bad and the "instant on" feature works perfect.

No touch screen.

Cons: Battery life is abysmal at full power, but that is to be understood with the horsepower. Since I plan on using the battery at times, I reduced the brightness while running on battery to help extend. I am seeing in the 2.5-3 hour range depending on load.

I also do not like the fact I cannot remove the battery. I am so used to carrying two batteries with me and considering the short lifespan, this is a significant design flaw. This for me was the reason for reducing from a 5 to a 4 on the "egg-o-meter".

When attempting to update windows, I hit a wall that caused me to have to restore the factory settings. The second time I hit the same error and simply updated windows incrementally taking 5-10 updates at a time. This was over 4 hours of time, but it still allowed me to work with some interruptions. I did not move to 8.1 yet.

As others here, I also looked for a decent Win7 machine, but since I couldn't find it I opted for this one.

Other Thoughts: The 750 GB HD came partitioned as split between C and D with a small 20 GB recovery partition. I successfully merged the two partitions using disk manager right after turning it on because I don't like having to deal with two logical drives. Piece of cake.

To reset factory settings, I had to do the following:
1. Power down machine.
2. *Unplug and hold power button for 15+ seconds* (this was the critical piece of information that was not in the manual) to discharge residual current.
3. Plug in and restart machine.
4. Press F9 through POST.
5. Select from menu.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Brian,

It's great to know that you are satisfied with the laptop overall. I appreciate that you have shared some helpful tips to other users. I do understand your concern regarding the battery life. In order to prolong the charge time, please set Power Options in the Control Panel to power-saving mode. 5 out of 5 eggsFantastic notebook

Pros: The specs are fantastic, especially when compared to the very reasonable price. It's very thin and attractive to boot. With a little calibration the display is gorgeous, and 1920x1080 pixels compressed onto a 15.6" screen means the picture is sharp and clean.

Chiclet keyboard is nice and responsive.

Ignore the bit of description that states "1x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0:" it has 2 USB 3.0 ports on the left, one USB 2.0 on the right.

Cons: Windows 8 is a nightmare to update, but see Other Thoughts below.

Other Thoughts: With time and patience you'll have Windows 8 fully updated within a day. Just don't try to do all 100+ updates at once: pay attention to the release dates and do a few at a time. I applied updates at 4 month chunks starting with 2012 and didn't have a problem getting it to 8.1.

Not ASUS' fault, not worth an egg deduction.

3 out of 5 eggsbe wary!

Pros: Great specs. At the time of this writing it's definitely the best hardware you can get on a laptop for the price point.

The 1080p IPS display. The 8 gigs of ram. Enough ports for a laptop. Nice full keyboard, and super light.

It'll even play Diablo 3 Reaper of souls, at medium at around 35fps.

Cons: Initial setup. No windows 7 support as far as I know.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

4 out of 5 eggsGreat computer with just a few problems

Pros: This machine is fast, it replaced an acer AMD A-8 machine that I had, that started failing to see the HD. The speed isn't terribly noticeable, but it does seem a bit faster. I use this as a development machine (Java), and I wanted a machine that had a high resolution main display, and could drive two other screens. This one definitely fits the bill.

Cons: Like others I had problems with the windows update, it tried to do all of them as one massive batch (99 updates), and after 10 hours of working on it, it failed, and reverted. The next day I let it do a couple at a time, and then told it to reboot, so it didn't fail, and somehow it made it through the whole list that day. I then upgraded to 8.1, which worked just fine.

Other than windows, there were a few other small things...
It is not easy to replace the hard drive, I was going to put in a SDD, and there is a cable that seems like it is glued to the current hard drive.

The HDMI slot and the svga slot are too close together. In order to have two external displays I had to cut off the side of the svga connector and hammer down the metal to use it. It would have been nice if they would have planned for people who might actually want to use both.

Other Thoughts: I like this machine overall, it fits the bill almost perfectly for me, it was hard finding another laptop that had more than one slot for external display, and I didn't want to have a usb slot taken up by a display port.

1 out of 5 eggsWIndows 8 ruined my laptop

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: Owned this laptop for 3 days and for 3 days straight I have being trying to update windows, but I have constantly been receiving errors and crashes while trying to update windows or open my web browser. These errors, crashes/Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) have been; BAD_POOL_CALLER, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK, and DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL(tcpip.sys).

The laptop is brand new and there should not be this many problems. I've tried contacting asus and newegg customer support for a attempt to get a repair/replacement laptop for my malfunctioning laptop.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for the positive comment. I certainly understand your concern regarding the issue regarding WINDOWS Update. Please try to upgrade to WINDOWS 8.1 using a LAN connection. The blue screen of death can be related to a corrupted OS, please try to do a PC Refresh to resolve the problem. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3738746 on the subject line.

1 out of 5 eggsNice laptop if Windows 8 didn't break it

Pros: On paper, the specs seem nice.

The physical case of the laptop is nice.

Cons: Okay, so I have owned this laptop for 4 days and 3 of those days I have spent day and night trying to figure out how to fix my windows 8. The laptop crashes constantly and sometimes minutes after restarting the laptop from a previous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Of the errors I have received that caused a BSOD are; BAD_POOL_CALLER, KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (tcpip.sys).

I should NOT have to deal with all these problems for a laptop being BRAND NEW.

I have tried to contact newegg and ASUS customer support for a replace/return of this laptop.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for the positive comment with the tablet. I apologize if you started getting a blue screen of death after 3 days. This is normally related to a corrupted WINDOWS, please try to run PC Refresh to resolve the issue. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3738771 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent laptop for price

Pros: - Nice screen quality
- Solid construction
- Chicklet keyboard (if that's a plus to you)
- Decent performance across the board for every day computing
- Light weight
- Conservative size profile

Cons: - Sketchy trackpad (I'm yet to use an ASUS laptop with a trackpad that I like)
- Skimpy on the port quantity
- Fairly large power adapter
- Didn't ship with Windows 7

Other Thoughts: It could be considered false advertising to keep pushing the "Battlefield 4" offer. Even though they have that word "limited", that means nothing to a customer, its a smoke and mirrors word of deceptive marketing.

Quoting the official email from AMD's rewards site: "*Receive an AMD Unique ID which may be exchanged through www.amd.com/getbattlefield4 for a Complimentary EA Origin® Product Code (“Product Code”). Product code may be used to download Battlefield 4™ accessed through the EA Origin® online game platform when you buy an eligible AMD product from a participating retailer. The promotion is available for a limited time and expires March 31, 2014 or when supply of Product Codes is exhausted, whichever occurs first. The AMD Unique ID Code must be redeemed on or before April 30, 2014 in order to obtain EA Origin® Product Code. LIMIT: One (1) Product Code per person per eligible product purchased. Internet connection required. Internet connection fees may apply. The promotion is open to participants who are 17 years of age or the age of majority in their country of residence, whichever is older. Offer is subject to geographical limitations. See www.amd.com/battlefield4offer for complete details including a list of eligible AMD product(s). Game product code will be available for download on the date of the game release. Game release may be delayed for reasons that are out of the control of AMD. Void in any country where prohibited."

They are selling/promoting a laptop under the premise of a "free offer" that is no longer valid.

It should be a legal stipulation in Newegg's contract that every vendor will specify exactly what the customer is getting for the price right down to the offers/gimmicks and if that changes, the product information should be amended, or de-listed.

I would like to see the supply chain all the way from Electronic Arts to ASUS, AMD & Newegg taking the integrity of their marketing a lot more seriously.
