5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: I was skeptical at first with it being a refurbished product as I am accustomed to buying new if possible but this computer has exceeded all of my expectations. I've had this laptop for about a year and a half now and I've used it for school and games. As an engineering student, I need to run 3D modeling software, coding software, and I want to have music going in the background. I can do all of these at the same time with dual monitors (which is very simple to set up with the multiple output ports on the computer). I really can't say enough good things about this computer. The back lighting of the keyboard is perfect and can be dimmed with the push of a button. The brightness of the screen can be adjusted with the push of a button. The volume can be adjusted with the push of a button. It's everything I needed in a computer and more.

Cons: There are very few issues I have with the computer but there are issues. First of all, the computer is HEAVY and I know the specs and how much it weighs but hauling this monster around in a backpack is a chore. Secondly, the computer heats up and when it does, the fans are pretty loud. Most of the time I use headphones so it's not that big of an issue but if you want a silent computer, this isn't it. That brings me to the third issue I have with this computer; the built-in subwoofer failed on me about two months in. I suppose that's par for the course when buying refurbished products and like I said, most of the time I use headphones but still, it's lacking bass when I unplug. The only other thing that I can think of is that there are only 4 USB ports. Yes they're all 3.0 but when you have a mouse plugged into one 24/7, a cooling pad plugged in, a printer, and a phone charger, there's nowhere for anything else. This is, however, easily fixed by getting a USB hub which solves the problem.

Other Thoughts: The pros outweigh the cons on this laptop for sure. The computer came with Windows 8 and a free upgrade to 8.1. I also got the free upgrade to Windows 10 so now I'm running Windows 10 and the computer has no problems at all. This isn't the latest and greatest CPU but I haven't run into any hiccups yet. With 16GB of ram, you aren't limited to how many processes you can run before it bogs which is nice. I constantly have two windows of Google Chrome up with multiple tabs open and background apps like Spotify and Skype running all the time. I use steam a lot and still with all the other things running it does just fine. As an engineering student, I'm often in environments where everybody has a computer out and is working on a project and I've gotten lots of comments on how cool my computer was and how many things I've got running and it still doesn't break a sweat. I'm very happy with this computer and if you're considering it, get it, you won't be disappointed.

Pros: The specs speak for themselves, this a phenomenal machine. I'm upgrading from the G74 and I love everything about it.

Cons: I'm not sure what the refurbishment was for, but on my first update the computer got stuck in an update error loop until I did a system restore. This happened again at my next update so I did a complete factory reset and that seemed to fix it. Since then there hasn't been a problem but someone less tech savvy could have been extremely unhappy with this.

4 out of 5 eggsvery nice

Pros: This was a refurbished unit, and it looks brand new, I bought this for my daughter when her Mac kept having problems. She is a graphic artist and didn't want anything else but a Mac, but when she got this she loves it. It's a heavy machine, but it's super fast, has all the bells and whistles. Great laptop so far!

Cons: This comes with windows 8 and it would not download anything to get the upgrades. Once we finally were able to get it to download the updates, there were almost 100 updates, which took about 6 hrs to download (and i have high speed internet), then another hour to upgrade to windows 8.1 But after all that, it works great and is one awesome machine.

Other Thoughts: She's only had this machine for about a month, but loves it for all her graphic artist stuff etc. I would recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a super fast machine with all the bells and whistles. I also highly recommend NewEgg for good products, great deals and good customer service.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Zeph,

It's good to know that your daughter is loving the laptop besides the long ordeal of installing all recommended WINDOWS Update and upgrading to WINDOWS 8.1. Should you need further assistance, please email me at and write down service# xxxx on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

Pros: Great speed, beautiful picture, comfortable keyboard.

Cons: It's bigger and heavier than regular laptops. Don't buy it if you're going to be carrying it with you all the time.

I use it as a mobile desktop. Most of the time it's on my office desk, but I can bring it with me when I travel.

Other Thoughts: I'm using this as my main development machine. I need to run web servers, databases, virtual machines and my development tools. This laptop is able to handle all of this.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Laptop

Pros: This computer is loaded with features.
Back lit Keyboard
Intel i7 processor
17" screen.
This laptop is super fast. The load up time is like 10 seconds or so. The key board is smooth to type on and very well laid out for a laptop keyboard.

Cons: At times the computer seems to run slow. I'm not sure why as the processes in the the task manager are all normal and nothing is taking more memory or resources than normal.
I also don't like the left shift key on the keyboard as it is smaller than a normal shift key and has the \ key right next to it. There are plenty of times I hit \ instead of shift.

Other Thoughts: Over all a great laptop for the price. I am using it for programming and was unable to find another laptop with all these features for anywhere near the price that I paid. I would recommend this to someone who wants a powerful laptop but is on a budget.
