4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It's a pretty great balance between power and portability. Smaller than a laptop, but more powerful than a netbook. Battery life is pretty good. Touchscreen is cool, but not all that practical.

Cons: Downgrading to windows 7 is possible, but not a great idea. There are a couple devices that just won't work in win7. Comes with a pretty lousy 5400rpm hard drive.

Other Thoughts: I replaced the hard drive with an SSD, improved performance dramatically. I reinstalled windows 8.1 from scratch to get rid of the bloatware. Drivers were a bit of a pain but entirely possible.

1 out of 5 eggsDead in less than 6 weeks

Pros: I really liked this laptop. It was lightweight, sleek, very fast for the amount I paid for it, and the touchscreen was very sensitive. I really had no complaints, until it randomly died after only having the product for 6 weeks.

Cons: I literally bought this laptop less than 6 weeks ago and it is dead. I did not damage it in any way--to the contrary, it was treated very gently and with great care given that I really liked it and could not afford to buy another computer.

I bought the laptop on December 13th. On February 5th, with no warning, the screen went black, and it won't come on. The warranty through new egg expired after 30 days and I've had it for probably less than 50 and it is DEAD.

I called ASUS today to explain the problem since it's still under 90 day warranty. At first it seemed like they were going to handle it. I was still really frustrated given that I need this laptop every single day and now I'm going to be without it for weeks and have to pay shipping on top of it, but they couldn't even do that right--the customer service representative said he was about to generate an RMA number for me and then somehow ended up sending me to find my own RMA number on their website.

I am going to have to pay to have this shipped, lose whatever work I could be doing on it for the next 2-3 weeks, and then hope that the product I get back doesn't just die again after the 90 day warranty. WOULD NOT BUY THIS AGAIN.

Other Thoughts: Seriously, I cannot believe how poorly this has been handled. This laptop cost me nearly $500, I have had it for less than 6 weeks with zero damage, and now it is completely and utterly dead and I am at a loss for whether or not it will ever work again, and if it does, what kind of time and money it will cost me to get it that way. Will never buy from this company again.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Ren,

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product. I apologize if the system will not power on, prematurely, after 6 weeks. Please verify if the AC adapter was properly connected from the laptop to a working surge protector or AC outlet and the power button is being pressed all the way down to trigger a power on signal. Also, please try to disconnect the AC adapter and let the unit drain for 24 hours to reset and clear the memory. After doing this, please reconnect your AC adapter then power on the unit. If the troubleshooting tips failed to resolve the issue and you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150312956 on the subject line.

Regards,

Rodel

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Computer but BEWARE

Pros: The computer is great. Exactly as advertised and an excellent buy for the hardware. You just have to clean up the junk that's loaded on it. Be prepared that you will spend some time cleaning it up because you can't shut down the junk and the pops are continuous. VERY FRUSTRATING.

Cons: It came loaded with junk software and programs. Lots of pop ups and lots of junk stuff. It took hours for my son (who is a software engineer) to clean it up. When I told him what was going on and that I couldn't use it because of the junk. . . he thought it was me. . . when he opened it up he couldn't believe all of the junk. He hadn't seen anything like it. It took hours to clean it up.

Other Thoughts: I almost returned the computer because of the junk on it. Now that it's cleaned up and the bad apps and software are removed it's a great computer.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear JK,

It's great to know that you find the product as a great computer. I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. The system works fine with the pre-installed software without compromising performance. Definitely, removing these, if not needed, will definitely improve system performance. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N141141020 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

Regards,

Rodel
