4 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop

Pros: -Full-HD screen
-Touchscreen
-$510 when I bought it
-Intel HD 4400 (good for this price range)
-i5
-Sleek design

Cons: -Windows 8 (but we can't really blame the laptop for this)
-No SSD (but in this price range that'd be crazy)
-Some WiFi problems, but nothing to write home about
-No optical drive, but I knew that going in

Other Thoughts: This is the nicest laptop I've owned. It has the sleek sophistication that Mac users pay an extra thousand for. I don't see the point in owning a powerhouse laptop, since extreme components, graphic especially, drive the prices really high. I'll save that money for my nice desktop; this laptop is really useful for what laptops are good for.

5 out of 5 eggsI'm happy with it

Pros: Great battery life. If you stick to low-rent apps like Office & Firefox you can get a good 8 hours out of it. The screen is gorgeous - any angle viewing, and higher resolution than most laptops of the same size. Touch Screen is an intuitive dream. Love the new-style push-anywhere touch-pad. Runs nice and cool. The WiDi feature works really well (after you get it set up, which takes some fiddling).

Cons: The touch-pad can be a little sensitive. Context menus would pop up for no determinable reason sometimes. I made some adjustments with the Asus Smart Gesture, which helped quite a bit, but it still happens from time to time - a minor issue though.

Other Thoughts: Uninstall the Asus Power Manager and just stick with the Windows Power Plan defaults. Open it up in the morning to find the battery was dead because it stayed on all night when it was it was supposed to sleep and later hibernate. Windows 8 is actually pretty nice once you get used to it - just take the time to learn how things are organized.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Customer Service / Laptop Did Not Work

Pros: I thought price, screen, and the overall package was a great deal, but BOY WAS I WRONG....

I was able to turn it on and then it broke and wouldn't boot at all.. basically it was a brick with one led on!

Cons: So the only con with the machine is the hard drive. buy an SSD and you'll be pumped. You might also want to consider a new wifi card if you care.

As for the other very important aspect of my order and the primary reason for my low rating was that the whole other end of the purchase the customer care and convience factor was horrible.

Newegg shipped it to me having delayed my shipping date and had to reissue my tracking number because my order was just sitting there until I called them like uhhh why did my tracking number expire? they then re-issued it and it was finally sent.

I then got it as said above and it worked for a minute then bricked out on me.... I requested an RMA replacement and they were like sure no problem we'll ship it.

Then I get a notice oh your refund has processed... again i'm like uhh noooo, so I call and they are like well it isn't in stock. For the life of me, I can't understand why they would ask for my shipping address say it was going to be shipped and then the next day say nope its a refund now. That is crazy right?

I also bought the warranty (peace of mind) and it is interesting but they conveniently forgot to refund my warranty ($70) until I called them back. They would have totally taken that to the bank had I not called and said what's up. so FYI watch out for that.

To conclude, I totally thought Newegg.com was a great service I ordered things and they arrived with out any problem, moving forward I learned my lesson. DON'T BUY LAPTOPS ON NEWEGG! They delay, mess-up, and they were generally unsupportive or accommodating to the various blunders they made on their end.

When you want to buy a laptop do yourself a favor and get it at a retailer in person

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Thin, lightweight, asus logo lights up, no optical drive

Cons: Would prefer to buy it without an OS

Other Thoughts: Only reason I didn't give it a 4 out of 5 is because Newegg let it sit as "packaging" for a week. I called and they said they would send another out within 48 hours with 1 day shipping. Three or four days later I check the new tracking number they gave me and its been updated from "shipping info recieved" to "shipping info voided". Call again, after 45 minutes on the phone I learn that the first two warehouses were out of stock. Finally 2 weeks later it arrived.

Its a good laptop though, screen resolution is nice, no optical drive adding useless space and weight, touch screen seems to be very responsive, keyboard feels good. Pretty good deal for 500 bucks.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsGood notebook

Pros: As advertised below - nice processor, expandable RAM, ability to use any SSD (including Crucial M500) - laptop arrived with only 80 hours on the hard drive, screen is flawless.

Cons: - Shipping times may vary (2 weeks in my case)
- See below about keyboard idiosyncrasies - namely feedback which causes the touchpad to register a mouse click while typing and the key press noise; the former is definitely more of a problem than the latter

Other Thoughts: You can use this with a Crucial M500. Boot the Win8 off the mechanical drive and immediately create a system recovery disk (File History in Control Panel) - use 16GB or better flash drive.

You then need to go into the BIOS and disable secure boot, then enable CSM mode (boot options page.

Install the SSD (and RAM if you bought extra) - boot off the recovery media.Go to troubleshooting, command prompt.

Run diskpart to create a partition and then make it active. Format the partition in diskpart. Run bootsect with /nt60 switch to make the partition bootable. Reboot and load the recovery media again, then go to the command prompt.

Run the following commands:

D:
CD SOURCES
dism /apply-image /imagefile:install.swm /swmfile:install*.swm /index:1 /applydir:c:\

(10-20 minute wait)
Reboot, allow sysprep to finalize the new install, you are ready to go

** Be extremely careful when setting your password. The touchpad will cause it to misinterpret what you type. I ended up reinstalling everything after becoming locked out because of this.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Deal Found

Pros: i5 Core, Room for memory expansion, Back-lit keyboard, Touch Screen, 1080p native resolution, Easy upgrade to SSD for major increase in performance, Full HDMI working port sound and video as opposed to other review (just need the correct drivers installed, Beautiful brushed metal shell, USB 3.0.

Cons: The driver and software for touch pad doesn't seem to save the options configured. Have to routinely tic/un-tic desired settings. The software/driver also seems to disable a portion of the right section of pad, which then doesn't respond to drag and tap selections until i re-position my hand to use left portion of touch pad.

The bios does not support boot with numlock on. Pain to activate numpad each time i restart or or shutdown completely rather than only hibernate machine instead.

Other Thoughts: Hope to eventually find an option driver/software for touchpad in the future. I tend to use the right half of touchpad most often due to being i am right handed.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Notebook. Terrible OS

Pros: Looks and works brand new!

Cons: OS is no good to me.

Other Thoughts: This notebook was working great! It looked brand new as well. I couldn't be more happy. Then I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and now my wifi wont work. I have tried to use the previous windows 8 drivers and still no luck. I'm only going to fiddle around with it for a while longer before I send it back.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's good to know that the notebook is working great and you're happy with it. I apologize if the built-in WIFI stop working after upgrading to WINDOWS 8.1. Please make sure all recommended were installed successfully after upgrading to WINDOWS 8.1. 2 out of 5 eggsShortcut Keys Stopped Working

Pros: *Metal
*Sleek
*Lit Keyboard
*Keyboard is nicely laid out
*Responsive Touch pad
*Decent specs for the money & can be upgraded

Cons: Some of the short cut keys stopped working. Key board back light only turns on for a second after turning laptop on. It did work when I first got the laptop. The short cut key is unresponsive. Mute key, unresponsive. Volume key, unresponsive. Screen key, unresponsive. Screen brightness key, unresponsive. Touchpad key, unresponsive. Snooz key, unresponsive. I looked in the bios to see if everything was enabled but couldn't find anything specific for the keyboard or shortcut keys. Don't know what else to do since the firmware is the most recent update.

Upgrading to an Sammy ssd is a pain because of AMD not playing well with Samsung but it's not impossible.

Other Thoughts: I've been trying to find out why the back light, volume and mute buttons would quit working by reading forums but except for problems with the keyboard back light adjustment being an issue, I have yet to find an explanation or fix. If an operable keyboard back light is an important feature to you, you might want to consider a different lap top. I took a chance on a refurb and came up short unfortunately.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I'm glad that you are satisfied with the features of the laptop. I apologize if the hotkeys, touchpad keys suddenly stop working. If these are working before, please try to run System Restore in order to revert the system to the last known good configuration. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3771285 on the subject line.

5 out of 5 eggsHeck of a Bargain

Pros: At this price (just over $500) I couldn't find any other machine with all these features. A 1080p touchscreen, decent amount of RAM (6GB) and a nice design (metal, fairly thin) is quite a bargain. I was a little apprehensive buying refurbished and hearing about some challenges with the Atheros Wifi hardware used in some machines. I checked out my machine immediately and it had less than 40 hours of use on the HD and came with the Intel WiFi hardware, so my fears were resolved. The machine seems brand new.

Cons: Nothing significant to mention. I wasn't crazy about the lack of packaging and documentation, but that is what you get buying a refurb.

My machine came in sleep mode and some sort of Factory Reset app launched, but not run. I went out on a limb and clicked Run on the utility and it restored the machine to a factory state and prompted me to walk through Windows first boot process (setting time, locale, language, etc). It seems that whomever did the refurb didn't quite finish what they were doing.

Machine ships with outdated OS, requiring 104 updates to Win 8 before Win8.1 can be installed.

All of these complaints will be a distant memory in a couple days once I've finished setting up the machine, so I'd still give the machine 5 stars.

Other Thoughts: I concur with others comments that an SSD would be a great upgrade as the 5400RPM drive limits machine's responsiveness. Now that 240GB SSDs are hovering around $100 you's end up with a $600 laptop would compare nicely to others @ $1000+. Spend another $100 to upgrade to 12GB of RAM and you're really cooking...
