5 out of 5 eggsDecent multimedia laptop

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Beautiful screen, keyboard, and all aluminum frame. Typing on it is wonderful. I am a fast typer and very particular about my typing. Spacious, backlit keyboard (you can vary brightness!), chiclet syle keyboard with numpad. I used the keyboard out of the box with less errors than my lenovo thinkpad, which prides itself on the keyboard. Not necessarily means it is flawed or inferior, but just that my typing was better out of the box with the asus.

DVD writer is a plus for some, but I like that you can swap it out with a kit for another hard drive. I havent used DVDs in forever. If ASUS included the kit, that would have been awesome.

Love the touchscreen. Its one of those things where you may not think you want it, but once you do, you always want it. I first used a tablet with touchscreen, and decided with WIn8, it is very nice to have.

Speakers! I have not had a laptop sound so nice. I play music all the time when I am home, and the little included subwoofer is really nice. For a laptop, I am so impressed. Even on my lap it sounds nice. This is one of the best features, since most laptops do not have such good sound.

Dedicated graphics card is nice. Good for moderate cad and games on medium. I play SC2, and it handled it on medium. Depending on the map, you could probably get away with high settings. I did not swap the hard drive out with a SSD, so I am sure that will help performance. I installed autocad 2015, and that ran perfectly.

Trackpad is very nice. Not as nice as a lenovo thinkpad, but one of the best I have encountered.

Cons: I thought it would do better at starcraft 2, but this graphics card is scaled down a little to provide for better battery life. I did no optimizations to the laptop or drivers, just ran things right from the box. So as a disclaimer, I did not likely realize the true potential of the system.

The stock 1TB hard drive is garbage, but you already knew that. Get the kit and replace the DVD writer with it, and throw in a 256+ SSD, OR a 1TB seagate hybrid drive. I have one in another laptop and love it.

Bulky and heavy. this is not a good laptop if you travel. I am a truck driver, and am always going different places, using laptop inside and out of the truck. This is not a good fit for me. It is the kind of laptop that prefers to be in a stable location. My situation is unique, and no eggs against the laptop (i knew the specs). But after giving the laptop a go, I decided it was too bulky for me.

Fixed battery. I hate that manufacturers are doing this now.

Mediocre battery life. I think I saw 4 hours with heavy use.

Other Thoughts: If I was using this as a desktop replacement, it would be perfect. Love the screen (much better than my lenovo thinkpad yoga screen). The all metal body is lovely, and the keyboard and speakers are WONDERFUL. Fr y 's electronics has this in stock, they might have it on display. It certainly isnt the bulkiest out there, and for the price, you cant beat the hardware (i7, GTX850M, touchscreen). At $989 it is a pretty good deal.

2 out of 5 eggsGood laptop, problems came along with it

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Great computer with wonderful graphics, loads data fast and at a decent pace. You can play games with no problem and with no trouble. I like a laptop that can run games smoothly and efficient to use.

Cons: I owned this laptop for only 3 days, and it already started to have problems. The screen turned black, I was unable to see the starting screen when I logged on.It also started to restart the PC after every other minute because a problem has occured. Keep in mind that I only had the laptop for only 3 days, with a minimal amount of applications/ games downloaded. There was also an occurrence of redundant popups and there were hundreds of pc errors as soon as i turned on the laptop

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Eri,

Thank you for the positive comment. I apologize if you started having issues with the system, not booting up normally, after 3 days . All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections, they should be free from spyware or malware. 2 out of 5 eggsGREAT LAPTOP BUT DIED ON THE 2ND DAY

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Great laptop with good CPU and GPU. The IPS screen is great, clear and beautiful. I had run it for half of a day watching the movie on high def. The noise was very low and no heat though the fans were on all the time.

Cons: End of the first day I ran it, it could not reboot. The power light was on, but the screen remained black and I could hear the fan's noise. I forcefully turned it off and tried to turned it on, but it did not work. Battery was fully charged. Reboot on battery only did not work neither.
It was supposed to be my main work station and
all my communication was in this laptop and now all were gone.
I believe I got a defect one otherwise I am scare of Asus laptop.

Other Thoughts: I contacted Asus and was told to return it back since there is no easy fix.
eManual for the laptop, page 114, mentioned this problem and it seems this is a known issue to Asus. I hope Asus has a good fix for this.
2 eggs for now and will update soon!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for considering the product a great laptop with good CPU and GPU. I apologize if the laptop failed to bootup normally, no video, at the end of the first day. Normally, you just have to click or tap the touchpad to wake it up. Possibly, the system just when into a Sleep mode. Another step to try is by doing a hard boot a couple of times. Should you need further technical assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N141226873 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Hardware for price

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: I bought this laptop going into my freshman year, as an engineering student. I wanted something that was powerful yet portable, so I could I use it around campus. One of the major requirements was it would have to be able to run CAD software.

This laptop has not dissapointed. The processor is very fast, with it's 4 physical and 8 virtual cores. I have rarely been able to slow the processor down. It has been able to run both Portal on high settings, and Solidswork fine. The RAM also is not a bottleneck, as I have yet to run out space with the 8gb. Once a program is loaded it will run with no lag.

The graphics is also great, and the dedicated graphics card was definately worth it. My form of testing this was by playing portal in full 1080p HD. The graphics card never once struggled to render, although it did put out a lot of heat. I have not had to lower the graphics settings of a single program. If you need to conserve power there is an option to turn off the Nvidia GPU, and use the integrated Intel card instead, and this does help with battery life. The screen is also very nice, with being 1080p. I haven't noticed any dead pixles, and obviously it is a good resolution. The touch-screen is a nice feature for me, but wasn't a must, so I like to use it every now and then, but it isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread.

The cooling is another well designed part of this laptop. First of all it is designed so that keyboard area, and not the bottom of the laptop heat up. So rather than burning your legs the keyboard area, not the keyboard itself, gets warm. This isn't too problematic as you don't touch this area much while typing. The worst I have stressed the system is while playing portal at max settings, so the GPU and CPU were running hard. At this the fans were at max and the CPU and GPU were reading around 170F, so not the best, but it is not even close to over-heating.

Other reviewers have complained about the sound quality. I can see some validity to their point, but I am fine with the audio. You need to mess with the included equalizer, but if you get the right settings, and have the subwoofer attached, you can get pretty good sound quality for things like Netflixing, or listening to Pandora.

Also this laptop has a very sleak design, and is even sexier than I thought it would be from the pictures. The bottom black part curves inwards, so it looks like the laptop is levitating, and makes it look even thinner. Asus is copying apple with lighting up their logo on the lid, and I like it.

It has a fair battery life, which for me is usually 2-3 hours. This is pretty good if you are just using it in between classes or for other short bursts, but you definately can not make it a whole day on your computer without the charger.

Cons: First as other people have alluded to, the hard drive is the major bottleneck. You do have to wait for programs to load, and large files to open. But this isn't as major as people make it seem. Once the program, or file is open the processor takes over and it runs very quickly. You just have to be patient at the beginning, and then it's not an issue.

As people have said the sound is an issue. First the main speakers rely on reflection, so if you don't have your laptop on a flat hard surface the sound will be distorted. Also the set-up seems to be very sensitive to equalizer settings. If you make minor adjustments you can hear the difference. Once you get the right setting it sounds great, but you have to take the time to find it.

The touchpad has been problematic for me. This is because when you rest your hand on it it registers it as a click, so your mouse jumps while you are typing. This is not an issue in Windows 8, as they disable the touchpad as you type. But I have Ubuntu and with 14.04 Ubuntu actually got rid of this feature, so for now I will be suffering until they implement this feature. I also have the problem that when I am using the touchpad it clicks much more than I want to so I usually end up dragging a lot of things around. I ended up just temporarily disabling the touchpad in Ubuntu, and it worked out well.

The laptop isn't the lightest, but that's to be expected for the hardware it has. You will just definately notice it is in your bag. I'm fine though with walking a mile across campus with this and all my books.

Other Thoughts: First of all make sure to get a mouse with this. You can not do everything with the touchpad, and the mouse makes your life so much easier. For the hard drive, I am planning to soon get a solid state drive, and put the hdd where the dvd drive goes to get both the storage and speed, so I may make an update about that soon.

The white keyboard backlighting on silver keys is odd, but isn't that bad. I just turn off the backlight so all the letters are then black, and it's totally fine.

The cooling vent is located inside the screen hinge, so about half of the vented air goes straight out, and the other half gets blown on the screen. I haven't had an issue with this; just don't do something dumb like run your CPU 170F for 24 hours. Ther have been issues with the glossy screen. This is only an issue in bright light, and if it annoys you just get a matte screen cover.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop, had defective and got it wiped[Other Thoughts]

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Laptop is as fast as I'd like, for it's price.
GTX 850m can play Battlefield 4 and League for play,
i7 helps with Autocad and Matlab an other programs for school/work.
I definitely like the fact that it can run for about 3 hours without being plugged in to a wall, sometimes 3 hours, (hated my old netbook for dying within an hour, seriously slow and I'm a power user, most of the time heh)
I find this model is definitely the best bang for the buck at this price point.

Cons: Can feel bulky but I don't personally mind[Other Thoughts]

My watch likes to hit the palm rest since it's so lengthy(but I can just loosen my watch with the scuba expansion thingy and it's out of the way.[not really a con but you might find it annoying to open up your watch every time]

Other Thoughts: [Skip this if you want to read the defective portion below]

I'm 6'0" 220 lb male and I usually don't like little laptops just because they seem slow to me, I like my Desktop performance since again as stated before, I'm a power user.
My parents think I'm crazy though for bringing it to school everyday( I commute via subway to school in the city NYC) *Crossing my fingers It doesn't get stolen*
It would be a pain for most but considering my college is public and cheap, it's over booked with students and staff and It's always hard to find a computer, and not only that the computers seem overused to me and I would have brought my own keyboard and mouse.

Anyways about the defective portion:
I have been using the laptop mostly on weekends when I'm not home on my desktop and I've also been using the laptop sometimes as an extra screen( I really should get a third monitor) while at home and It's been working fine and has a great IPS touch panel. but what could be the problem? a few months in, almost 6 months in and the screen just stops working, as in it doesn't even turn on. I checked to see if the GPU died, but it still created a regular image out to an external monitor, and get this, the touch screen still worked, it's just the panel itself did not turn on. Windows booted, everything was fine(well except the panel) I sent it in to ASUS (had to pay almost 30$ just for shipping which was such a hassle, I don't understand why I should have to pay for shipping if it's their defect. It took about 2-3 weeks before I got it back and was very annoying that I didn't have a laptop to use during part of this semester(DURING MIDTERMS). I should stop ranting about myself and talk more about the laptop. I got it back with a wiped hard drive and they told me that the problem was fixed by reloading the OS. I did back up my files knowing that there would be a chance that they'd reload the whole laptop but It also set me back again with their support, now I had to reinstall everything which took another week, considering my busy schedule. Anyways I think that the laptop is great, I was just annoyed with the set back Asus put me through(I know it was unintentional) but would it have killed them to place first class priority mail provided both ways so that I could have my repair rushed since I was in a time crunch?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Mr. Chris P,

Thank you for the great comment you have provided to the laptop. I apologize for the inconvenience if you have to reload all your applications and files back to the system to have you back up and running. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N141210132 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

3 out of 5 eggsNice hardware, but out of the box problems

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Beautiful screen, good sound, nice hardware (cpu & gpu), touch screen and key pad were responsive.

Cons: Unit returned on 1st day due to keyboard not working out of the box. Specific keys in the middle of the keyboard (5,t,h,n,m,j,y,6) and 1,2,3 on the keypad did not register key presses at all.

Touch pad is stiff but functional. The DVD drive door did not sit fully flush one side. Very low contrast on keys when backlihgting is turned on. Look great with back lighting off, but very washed out and hard to read with backlight turned on. It needs darker keys or a non-white backlight. Slightly offset right arrow key (grouped with 10 key) a bit distracting, but functinoal.

Other Thoughts: Still shopping for a $1000 gaming laptop with a 1080 touch screen and discrete GPU.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: I have been using this laptop for months.. I'm really happy with it. You need to format the whole system again because it comes with so many junk programs. You definitely put a SSD.
The audio quality seems okey. I'm not expecting something powerful anyway.

What surprise me on this laptop is that They finally change the location of fan and they work very well(I have been using Asus laptops for decades)

The metal finish looks just amazing if you check the other laptops around this price range... It is hard to find this full body metal case and screen.

Cons: As I said Need a SSD and reinstall the Windows 8.1

2 out of 5 eggsSeems nice if you get a good one

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: The left half of the trackpad is permanently depressed and is extremely difficult to get it to click and register. For $1,200, something as simple as the trackpad should work well.

Other Thoughts: Seems like a great laptop if the hardware would hold up.

2 out of 5 eggsScreen Issues

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Touchscreen
Great graphics

Cons: Screen stopped working after a few hours... The screen would go completely gray and then start flashing. Update every driver I could think of and it still occurred. Might have been just a defective laptop. May or may not purchase this same one and give it another try.

Other Thoughts: I loved this computer until the screen stopped working properly. It has been sent back to newegg for a full refund.

5 out of 5 eggsASUS N550JK-DS71T

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: CPU is quad core and fast
Single 8GB DIMM - easy upgrade to 16GB
Large storage
Excellent screen
Great sound
Superb build quality

Cons: 5400rpm spindle disk
Crazy BIOS - need to think outside the warehouse never mind the box!
Insane default disk partitions

Other Thoughts: Researched laptops for weeks before deciding on this after seeing one in the flesh and playing with it for a while. Like the design and quality, the screen is superb (people complaining about the screen clearly got faulty ones) and the quad speakers plus external sub live up to the B&O reputation. The cons I listed did not make me even consider giving less than 5 stars, the disk is easy to replace with SSD, the BIOS is the latest American Megatrends and does not give options to boot to anything but hard drive unless you know how to change it. ASUS tech support live chat got me in and changing it within 30 seconds. The way ASUS carve up the hard drive reduces the available space to under 800GB. As I always do with a new laptop, I have wiped it, repartitioned and rebuilt using Windows 8.1 which has now made it meet all my expectations. Excellent laptop for the price.
I am a computer engineer/server admin so I know what I'm doing with computers, and this one is the same quality build as Apple devices, which is no surprise.
