3 out of 5 eggsBe prepared to deal with screen defects

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: - Masterful build quality with great materials
- Keyboard is pleasant to use
- Excellent performance
- Good sound when subwoofer is plugged in and placed on a flat surface
- Screen has great color reproduction and viewing angles
- Despite high temps, does not thermal throttle

Cons: - Screen is likely to be defective in some way (see Other thoughts)
- Sub-par sound when optimal conditions are not met (see Pros)
- Gets very hot when running CPU+GPU intense applications, I've seen as high as 95c CPU temps
- Touchpad has issues, for instance you cannot hold down spacebar and use the left click button. This makes using some programs (like Photoshop) which use that combination more of a hassle. In addition, while the touchpad offers a slick surface for longer strokes, small precise ones are met with quite a bit of friction.

Other Thoughts: Battery life is okay, you can expect around 3.5-4 hours of normal use out of it. Not horrible but not great either.

What's horrible are the rampant screen defects. If you're expecting a great screen without major issues, look elsewhere. The first machine I recieved had a multitude of issues, from an uneven backlight (producing a dark, shadowy blob on the bottom middle) to a strange burnt in checkered pattern which I can only assume was some diagnostic tool left on for way too long. My replacement didn't suffer from these issues but did have three small pressure points which produce bright spots, mostly visible on light solid colors. These points are permanent damage to the backlight and usually happen during a faulty installation, though I do wonder if they occurred during shipment. I'm reluctantly learning to live with them - at least it wasn't as bad as the first one.

This experience has damaged my brand loyalty with Asus who used to be my preferred manufacturer for notebooks and motherboards. I will definitely be more cautious when approaching Asus products from now on.

Newegg, on the other hand, provided incredible service throughout this process and always met my requests without resistance. They've earned a new premiere customer.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective Right Out Of The Box

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: None it didn't work

Cons: Defective screen right out of the box, had to call ASUS since Newegg customer service closes so early. Paid $75 for next day ship and now I have to pay to have it shipped to ASUS to fix and wait about 10 days to get it back.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: I mainly use my desktop and bought this ASUS N550JK-DS71T laptop for the portability. I haven't used it much, so I can't comment on battery usage. A couple(?) years ago, I helped a friend narrow their computer choice to an Asus N Series (an Asus N56 for work & multimedia; it was the most bang for the buck in her price range). And I really liked, too. I've been wanting an Asus N series for a while now, but wasn't thrilled with what was available until now... The N550JK is like the N56 with a faster processor, 3 USB3 ports, the latest/fastest Wireless LAN, a couple extra speakers, etc. It has 1 disadvantage that I can live with (only space for 1 hard drive) and one real advantage if you're upgrading memory from 8 to 16 GB... I haven’t opened it to verify, but it is reported to have 2 memory slots with only one slot filled with 8 GB RAM. So to max it out to 16 GB RAM, you only need to purchase one more 8 GB DIMM. That's nice! Most PCs come with both slots filled with less than the maximum RAM, so you have to buy 2 new ones and throw away what you have. Thanks Asus!

The N550JK has dual fan intakes on the bottom and blows the heat out along the back edge (slightly hidden across from where the monitor is attached)... so most of the heat likely goes up in front of the screen (and possibly down?). I haven't loaded any games as yet, so I haven't really heated it up much to really notice much heat rising up from in front of the screen. Seems like this intake position could be a problem if the PC is in your lap or on the couch and the intakes are blocked off. But then this different from other laptops, which mostly also have their cooling system open to the bottom.

I have an SSD on my desktop and am used to a FAST startup. I'd forgotten how slow startup is without an SSD. But, for the N550JK's price, I can live with it. Asus says it has a 2 second "Instant On" feature, but I haven't located it yet. I love the backlit keyboard. And while I think it may have looked better with black keys, I really like the silver tone keys... but only because it is easier to see dirt and keep them clean (I have an old, old white MS keyboard on my desktop for the same reason). Also like the trackpad and haven't had problems except the occasional unintended tap when I'm typing, which moves my typing to another spot on the page (but I don't do that too often).

Cons: Not sure if I may have gotten a faulty DVD player (problem staying closed)... Sometimes it will close and lock shut on 1st attempt, but occasionally it takes multiple trys. The problem occurs When I slide the DVD player back into the computer and the outside edge stops even with the PC edge. It won't go any further and will not lock shut. It will lock closed only when I am able to push it in just slightly inside the edge of the computer and then it will come back to the edge of the computer and stay locked. It sometimes takes a couple, 3, 4 attempts before I can get it to stay shut! I was tempted to knock off a star for this, but hopefully it's a fluke (just my PC) and won't get stuck open!

Really wish this great PC was available with Windows 7!!! I was a Windows 8 hater. But the latest version of Windows 8.1 is not TOO horrible. OK, it's really not THAT bad. But then I'm fairly good with computers (my friends seek me out for tech questions/computer help), so I've been able to find what I need without much difficultly. I absolutely hate that Microsoft takes what you already know (and where it's located) and moves it somewhere else FOR NO LOGICAL REASON! It would be OK if that new location made more sense, but in most cases, with Windows 8, it doesn't (same with those idiotic 'Ribbons' in MS Office - another MS stupid idea/disaster). So basically you just have to learn where a lot of things are all over again; for no apparent reason (except that MS wants to make it look different [when things are just moved around] or want save a few dollars to have 1 OS for computers, tablets and phones - Stupid move MS!). Sorry for the rant!

Other Thoughts: Quad speakers along the front edge. The sound is good. And as far as laptops go, the sound is pretty great. And it sounds even better with the external subwoofer. While the subwoofer speaker is OK (it's very, very light in weight), I kind of wish Asus had put a slightly heavier/better subwoofer speaker/magnet in there... Although, that may likely run down the battery faster(?), which would be bad. And if your hands are on the laptop working while listening to music (slightly blocking those front facing speakers), I noticed the sound can be a bit muffled. If you’re watching movies (and not typing), it isn't a problem.

Since it has a 1080 screen, I kind of wish it came with a Blu-ray player (as I buy Blu-ray disks and not DVDs anymore). Although, I put a DVD movie in and it did look great! Wonder how good it would look with a 1080p Blu-ray disk. The screen doesn't lock shut like my old Dell laptop did. But the hinge is stiff enough that it doesn't come open, so it's not a problem.

Aside from the DVD locking issue (and Windows 8.1), I really am enjoying thi laptop and am very happy with my purchase.

Newegg doesn't allow links, or I'd put one in. But if you go the the asus website and type N550JK in the search bar, they provide some helpful information. Be aware that that info is on the various iterations of the N550JK laptops, so not all of it applies to this N550JK-DS71T model.

5 out of 5 eggshardcore gamers!

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Amazing gpu it plays everything I throw at it on the highest settings. The touch screen is very response. It weights like nothing and I am a hardcore gamer elder scrolls online on the highest settings and it's like nothing to this machine it doesn't even get hot because it has 2 fans and blows the hot air down instead of from the left. The keybroad is nice and the back lit is amazing. there's a button on the left you can a make a shortcut to any app. The 8gb of ram is a ddrl so it uses less volts I think it uses 1.25 instead of 1.35 plus it's easy to up grade to 16gb because it's only using one slot. You need a T5 screwdriver to open it for upgrades. This thing on the highest settings game will play for about 3ish hours. people say they hate the trackpad because you have to click in the middle of it to click but it's designed like our phones you tap to click and tap with 2 fingers to right click I like it and use a mouse most of the time anyways.

Cons: The screen feels cheap and if you open it fast the screen will flicker, if you put it so closing the laptop does nothing it will disable the touch screen and it scared me. The laptop starts with flicker keys on so you have to hold the keys to type but take off flicker key in assess and it fixes it. The hhd is slow as dirt I'm upgrading to a sata lll ssd. The only way to upgrade to 2 hard drives is to take out the cd drive. I don't really listen to loud music but on 30 the sound is amazing and loud but for loud music you have to use the sub it sucks but it helps but all together the little thing is loud as hell.

Other Thoughts: windows 8.1 and geforce experience is installed and once you get used to it you'll like it mostly because I loved windows 7 and said windows 8 was poop but it's a lot easier to get used to with a touch screen. I wish the keybroad was black because it'd look cooler but the white it good and if you really wanted you could just replace it for 20 buck on Newegg. Overall it don't look like a gaming laptop but it'll do what a alianware 13 will do and more but less money and on this machine you can upgrade the gpu if you wanted you can just upgrade over the years to 880 or future gpu if you don't get this laptop make sure you get geforce gtx not gt. GT 750 and anything gt wise is not a gaming gpu it's made for animation and modeling. gtx can do both so you get 50 or 60 fps on gtx and 30 to 49 at best medium graphics. so good luck

5 out of 5 eggsAsus Laptop

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Great processor with dedicated video card. Responsive touch screen, very solid case, nice back lit keyboard, great sound that seems to come from a much larger machine.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I was looking at Lenovos for my grandson who is just entering high school but this caught my eye. I trust Asus components so I hope their quality goes along with their machines.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Desktop Replacement

This review is from: ASUS N550JK-DS71T Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3 15.6" Touchscreen Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Capable of running the latest and greatest games at ultra high settings.

Hasn't had any heating issues on a tabletop environment, probably not the same on a lap.

Good Sound when Sub is plugged in.

I like the capability of a touchscreen, although its not an all the time thing.

8 gig of memory is on one stick for easy upgrade to 16.

Cons: The great sound only happens when you plug in the external included sub-woofer. There is a dedicated port for it so don't worry about it taking up a USB port or your headphone jack or anything.

No second hard-drive bay. Although a lot of people replace the main hd with a ssd and replace the cd drive with a sata hd drive adapter.

Also just a pet peeve for me but the screen has a delicate feeling to me, most of my other laptops I am not afraid for it to get a little tough love. I don't get that warm fuzzy from this device, particularly because of the thin screen.

Other Thoughts: This really is a tough little machine, it has run all of my virtual machines with little trouble and handled every game I have tried. The sound is great but the sub woofer should have been built in. The four speaker setup is probably only noticed on a tabletop, which is where i use it 98% of the time.

The touchscreen is there for those who take advantage of it it, i was used to it from the small Asus T100 which has been my daily driver since last holidays so I got used to the gestures.

I would rate it a 4.5/5.
