1 out of 5 eggsGuy

Pros: Decent laptop

Cons: The hinge connecting the keyboard to the monitor snapped under general usage within a year. When I had to deal with the Support Services of ASUS they told me to send in my computer as it was under warranty and they'd pay for the repair costs. I obliged because I trusted them, but a week later I was slapped with a $500 bill. I was told if I didn't pay the bill within 1 week then they would claim ownership of my laptop. Later I found out that Theres a program called ADP which will cover the cost of 1 repair in the first year of the laptop. Turns out that the first representative I talked to opted me out of the ADP program with out me knowing and now I cannot use the program for my repair. ASUS scammed me $500. Don't let it happen to you.

1 out of 5 eggsdon't risk buying it no refunds

Pros: Not bad notebook in general it is slim and has a professional look for a gaming PC

Cons: The build quality of the Notebook I received is terrible. The headphone jack on the laptop isn't aligned with the cut out hole in the aluminum chase. I couldn't get the headphone jack in but when i manged to get it in the the headphone jack is completely dead no sound it can even read that the audio device is headphones. And not being able to use headphones is not something i can deal with. Also the external sub woofer that came with the PC doesn't wok i don't know if its the sub woofer it's self or if the sub woofer audio jack is also broken. One big thing that is badly build is the attachment of the monitor to the Laptop its self. the little bracket that is attached to the monitor and the second bottom part of the laptop is loose and feels like it will just come off when you open and shut the laptop one side of the bracket has a gap big enough to look through it the other side is so tight that is grinds when you open and shut the monitor. and the matte black plastic trim that goes around the edge of the monitor it not clamped properly. the bottom right side is popping out and it is not flush. I think when the were putting on the trim they broke of one of the clamps and it wont clamp in when i try to clamp it back in it pops right out and leaves a little bump. For a Notebook in this price line you do not want it to have unnecessary problems like those you want it to look and feel professional and the DVD reader and writer is cheap and flimsy my old $600 laptop had a more sold DVD reader writer.

Other Thoughts: what sucks the most is that newegg wont give me a refund so before purchasing this item think twice if you want to risk it. i watched videos of this item and i know that mine wasn't build properly. very disappointing from ASUS.

1 out of 5 eggsDecent build but hard to upgrade. Lasted 3 weeks.

Pros: Has a nice build to it. Feels solid and isn't too big for a gaming laptop.

Cons: Windows 8. From the start it felt like this laptop ran much more sluggish than a $1000 laptop should. I tried to remedy this by cloning the HDD onto an SSD (swapped out the dvd drive for the hdd and put the SSD in the main SATA 3 slot), but for some reason the SSD just did not want to be the main boot drive. Every time I changed the boot drive to the SSD it in the bios it would revert back to the HHD. Worst part about it, though, was that after 3 weeks of this I tried turning it on one time and nothing. The little LED on the side would glow but the conputer would not do anything else. Fans wiuld not turn on, nothing on the screen, keyboard lights wouldn't turn on, etc. Put the hardware back to the original setup and no change either. Called ASUS customer service and after some troubleshooting the rep told me I will have to RMA it. Dead after 3 weeks.

Other Thoughts: I am not sure if anyone else has had the trouble with upgrading the HDD on this, but my experience with it was atrocious. That is not including the fact that it now won't even start. Now I have to send it in for repairs which will leave me several weeks without a computer, all on the start of a 4 day weekend that I had hoped to use playing my favorite games. I heard ASUS has good products so I decided to give this a try, but the hassle it has caused me it is NOT a good start. Severely disappointed with ASUS.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize if the system failed to bootup after trying to upgrade or replacing the hardrive. Replacing or upgrading the hardrive is not a problem but opening the bottom cove will void warranty coverage. Installing all recommended WINDOWS Update will signiicanlty improve system performance and stability. Should you need further assistance, please email me at and write down service# N140935625 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggsStellar laptop

Pros: I bought this laptop to use for college, both for school and gaming. I'm not in engineering, but I am possibly going into the field of Computer Science so I'll be using this laptop for programming as well as writing papers and taking notes, etc.

I'm loving almost everything about this laptop - great build, sleek / professional look, red backlit keyboard (the RoG logo on the back of the display lights up red too!), stunning screen, controlled temp, etc.

The laptop feels very nice and solid. The keyboard is awesome to type on. The numlock keys are smaller than I am used to but it's nothing to worry about.

The camera is decent. Could be better, but it doesn't matter that much.

Speed is great. Startup is about 30secs. Maybe I'll look into getting an SSD for faster startup. I usually just keep it on sleep so when the laptop starts up right away when I need it.

Even Windows 8 is growing on to me. I used to hate it, but after I restored the old start menu with Classic Shell, I have to say the apps are actually pretty cool.

I haven't tried gaming yet, but I'll update this review as I get more used to this laptop.

Cons: The only real con with the g550jk is the battery life. Normal usage for the new laptop is about 3.5 hours but I expect it will decrease as time goes on so I might look into getting a backup battery. You only need to open the bottom case to reach the 4-cell Li-ion battery.

Other cons are minor
- The trackpad requires a little more effort to press down on the buttons. It doesn't matter much to me because I just tap for left-click and double tap for right-click. Although, sometimes the double tap doesn't register. Not sure if that's due to a slight sensitivity issue or I just didn't tap two fingers simultaneously correctly...
- Finger magnet. It's not bad really. I don't mind it at all
- Bloatware. Like all laptops, this one comes with some unwanted programs. Some people like to start with a fresh install. I just uninstalled all the programs I didn't need. Didn't take very long.
- Single drive partitioned into two (OS and Data) C:\ drive has 279GB and D:\ drive has 398GB. I'm just keeping all my files on C:\ for now to make things simpler. I don't think I'll use D:\ unless I need to

Other Thoughts: The display is 1920x1080, but the text in the program windows look a little blurry. Fix this by going to Screen Resolution -> Make text and other items larger or smaller -> and select Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Computer

Pros: Great, sturdy build. Good hardware. Good screen. It looks amazing, very classy design. Metal casing, not plastic. The external subwoofer really kicks (for laptop speakers, at least). Really impressive sound,

Cons: Like others have said, the casing is like a fingerprint magnet, and they don't wipe off easily. But that is a small price to pay for such a solid machine for the price.

Other Thoughts: I am ordering more RAM because i need at least 12 for what i am doing, But i really love the computer. No complaints.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat laptop

Pros: I seriously have no complaints about how this laptop performs. Handles every game I throw at it, the display is nice. I use visual studio a lot to compile all sorts of code which would give my old laptop a hard time, but this laptop runs all code super quick and never crashes like my old laptop. Definitely happy I decided to upgrade.

Cons: The casing attracts fingerprints like no other, but that's cosmetic, and the only complaint I have. As far as how the machine performs no complaints whatsoever

5 out of 5 eggsNot to thin not to thick

Pros: Great screen, beautiful body and feels super solid. the software is not super intrusive and its not filled with tons of bloat ware (like my friends lenovo.) sounds really good with the sub in. nice size not the thinnest but it carry's its size well. my Leopold TKL fits perfectly on it.

Cons: Fingerprint magnet. honestly I preferred the body of the n550jk but wanted the better HDD,CPU & different screen that this one had. I had some problems with the keyboard couldn't control lighting using FN, the software to control it was missing I think, downloaded ATK and rebooted and it was good. Had major issues with the Woofer at first. there was some sizing issues so putting in the jack was super tough, thought I was going to break it, and getting it out I almost pulled it off my desk, Iike it was glued in there. I put it in and out a couple times and it goes in fairly okay now. last is the hard drive partitions. why spilt a single drive into two partitions. OS and Data? why! just give me one partition! not to mention those are only the usable ones. there's 5 partitions!!!!! that's just crazy.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, but some issues.

Pros: Good build quality and hardware, weight is acceptable for the size. Performance is better than of a compatible Dell XPS 15. 7200 rpm HDD performs quite well, screen is bright and ASUS splendid utility makes games and videos look great.

Cons: Red back lit keyboard is irritating, back light is not available during account sing up screen. Why? There is no option to switch from Function Keys to Multimedia in BIOS or Mobility Center, one needs to hold fn key for multimedia controls. Screen has some bleeding along the bottom edge, however it's only noticeable on black background. ASUS support website is just fair. But my main complaint is the touchpad, two finger tap doesn't always registers as right click, there's no option to adjust sensitivity in ASUS utility.

Other Thoughts: Overall it's a solid machine and if and when ASUS improves its support and software it will be a very good one.

5 out of 5 eggsBeautiful Machine

Pros: Superb build design with the customer in mind.
The backlit keyboard feels great and took no time to get used to.
A very delightful display doesn't leave me wanting to use a monitor.
8GB of memory compliments the 4710HQ i7 for exceptional performance and multitasking. And the 850M GTX definitely deserves some credit for its assistance.
The ability to tweak settings for performance and quality versus battery use is a great feature and easy to use.
Sound quality is really impressive, especially with the external speaker.
I have yet to have any issues with overheating or the unit getting too hot.
There isn't a lack of ports to my liking, and bluetooth compliments this PC's overall connectivity potential. AND it has a DVD drive.
This Laptop, although it took a few hours to setup and get running up to par, now starts up faster than I had ever anticipated thanks to the 7200RPM HDD.
The overall graphics and performance for video games didn't leave me in awe but I definitely wasn't disappointed either. After all, I purchased this Laptop for general use and save gaming for my PS4.
Ultimately this is a wonderful machine and the value was well worth it. I HIGHLY recommend this unit for anyone who has a love for computers, is a first time Laptop buyer (like myself), is looking for a very sleek design and performance, etc...
I'm sure I'm leaving out some key positives.

Cons: Windows 8.1 took me a while to get used to and the lack of the old stock Start Menu is a bit disappointing. It also isn't as easy as it used to be getting shortcuts onto the desktop. May still install Windows 7 Ultimate.
The 850M GTX isn't utilized when hooking up an HDMI display. I struggle to understand why this is the case. Maybe a stability issue?
Expected fingerprint magnet.
Noticed some trouble with the touch-pad every now and then but it seems to be getting better. Maybe it just needs time to calibrate?
Nothing major.

5 out of 5 eggsWell worth the price.

Pros: I have had this laptop for five days now. I really like it's performance and looks.

- Powerful dedicated graphics card and quad core processor plays League of Legends on max graphics with 88 FPS and higher.

- Red back-lit keyboard. The logo on the backside of the display also lights up red.

- Laptop starts-up quickly when turned on.

- Windows 8.1 works very nicely.

- There is two fans inside this laptop. One is over the processor and the other is over the dedicated graphics card. The heat is vented out in front of the display where the hinge is. Stays cool when gaming for long periods of time.

- The laptop does not feel as heavy as it looks. It's actually lightweight for it's size.

- The 15.6" IPS display with 1920x1080 resolution looks very nice. The display is also anti-glare.

- Minimum bloatware. I uninstalled McAfee and installed my personal choice of antivirus.

Cons: - The display is too flimsy.

- No SSD.

- Short battery life. Battery drained quickly when unplugged.

- Touchpad is not the most accurate.

Other Thoughts: Overall this laptop was a great purchase.
