3 out of 5 eggsThe touchpad and keyboard is disappointing

Pros: Good screen, Graphics card is plenty powerful. CPU nothing to complain about. 8GB of RAM is plenty even if 4GB of it is stuck to the mainboard.

Cons: Battery life is shoddy, The touchpad is unresponsive and the smart gesture software doesn't help, unlike other ASUS laptops I have had in which the touch-pad was the best thing about the machine. After about 2 weeks the C, 1 ,2, 3 , and Enter keys stopped functioning, In which point I contacted ASUS, they were helpful. I could not be bothered to pay the $20 dollars to send it from Alabama to California. So I am getting a return.

In short:
It would of been a good laptop if it were not for the broken keys (which was a complete dealbreaker) and the shoddy touchpad.

Other Thoughts: I really wanted to like it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I certainly understand your concern regarding the issue with the touchpad. Please allow some time to get use to the multi-touch function of the pad. In order to improve the touchpad responsiveness and stability, please install all recommended WINDOWS Update manually in the Control Panel, Windows Update before using the system. Also, try updating the ASUS Smart Gesture utility and try to configure the touchpad within the application. ASUS provides warranty for the laptop in order to fix or repair any hardware defect. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N140935248 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

4 out of 5 eggsGood product, Unlucky though.

Pros: Good features
Price is fantastic for the specs
Decent battery life

Cons: Fuzzy resolution even though rated for 1080p
8 gig memory not expandable

Other Thoughts: Recieved a product with a defective fan, the fan was essentially purring whenever it ran. Very distracting.
Submitted RMA, had to pay for $50 shipping on a 4 day old laptop to get it repaired. That is the biggest disappointment.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize if you were dissatisfied with some features of the laptop and the fan being defective upon arrival. All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections, this is an isolated case. ASUS provides a 90-day warranty coverage for the laptop in order to fix or repair any isolated factory escape defect. If you need further assistance sending it in for warranty service, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N140928317 on the subject line.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat budget laptop

Pros: - Great Price for the specs
- Dedicated Graphics; can play many games on high settings
- Pretty Thin
- Has a numpad and DVD Drive
- Comes with 2 partitioned drives; 1 with the OS and the other is empty.

Cons: - Screen is pretty flimsy
- 1 Combined Speaker/Mic jack
- 5400 RPM HDD

Other Thoughts: Someone mentioned before there is no LED for the Caps Lock and Num Lock key. This is not the case. There are on the bottom left with the Power, Battery, etc. LEDs. I don't like where the power button is; when I try to press the esc, I sometimes press power. I am going to replace the HDD sometime down the road; 5400 is just a bit too slow for me. This laptop is great for me because I play games and go to school. Also dislike the 1 combined jack for the speakers/mic. Had to buy an adapter to use my headset. This is a great budget laptop if you're someone who needs a laptop and also plays games.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: Price, discrete video card, 8GB RAM, Intel i5

Cons: Windows 8

Other Thoughts: I really like this laptop. I've managed to re-partition the hard drive to allow for a dual boot of Xubuntu 14.04 x64 next to Windows 8. Now I boot almost all the time to Xubutnu. Very fast for everything I've tried so far including some light duty 3D modeling (FreeCAD).

5 out of 5 eggsLots of Power for the Price

Pros: Great finish
Cool to the touch while running
Offers a good mid range GPU and mid range CPU
Has a DVD drive...which is sadly disappearing from new laptops in order to reduce weight.

Cons: You have 8 GB. 4 GB is soldered to the motherboard. 4 GB on a DIMM slot. This really kills future upgrades for the RAM since it's not a great idea to mix the stock RAM with a separate higher speed 4 GB DIMM.

As usual, bloatware on the laptop.

Other Thoughts: I turned on the laptop to make sure it worked for about 10 min. Then I used a tool to get the Windows 8.1 key out of it. Using my PC, I formatted the drive and deleted the recovery partition. I installed a clean Windows 8 OEM copy, and used the OEM key to install Windows legally. It runs a lot faster running on a clean Windows.

However, since this was a friend's laptop (I just did the set up for them), I could not install an SSD (Out of their budget). Ideally, I would say getting a 240 GB SDD on this would really unlock more power. It was taking around 30 sec to a min to boot up to a workable state after 5 or so passes with Defraggler.

My one year old Acer laptop runs circles around this simply because of the 240 GB M500 SSD in it.

To me, your only real upgrade path is to just get an SSD and swap it into this. You can't really up the speed on that single RAM DIMM without causing some sort of instability since the pair of RAM would not match.

The HDD on this laptop is a 750 GB 5400 RPM Seagate Momentus (At least on this laptop I got). It runs at a decent speed, but after being spoiled by SSDs on my own desktop / laptop, it does start to feel a tad slow. However, once the laptop has Windows fully loaded, the laptop is very quick.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty good for the price

Pros: Has a dedicated GPU that gets the job done. Don't expect to max any games out, but the amount of RAM and CPU are more than adequate for most applications. Games are playable, and perform pretty decent, just not at max settings, like I stated above. Perfect for school, and some gaming. (I'm going into the IT field)

Cons: The actual material that this thing is made out of seems a bit on the cheap side, especially evident on the LCD screen. Just seems to flimsy to me, so I would recommend getting a protective case to put it in. Overall, my biggest complaint about this laptop is the charger. It is basically an ugly square box with a cord attached to it that does not stay plugged in to the wall well, and falls out of most sockets. I hope Asus doesn't continue to use that design because it sucks. and I will most likley be looking for an after market one that can stay plugged in.

Other Thoughts: Overall I would say that this thing has good features for the price, and would recommend, no problems so far with bad pixels or anything. Also, Make sure to uninstall all the crapware that comes bundled with it, and you should be good.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

4 out of 5 eggsGood Buy

Pros: Several people have mentioned the build quality as lacking, but maybe it was just luck of the draw because mine is built quite well; no loose panels or parts, screen is secured and all the keys work beautifully (no sticking as one user mentioned).

The laptop itself is sleek, a bit heavy but to me that's reassuring. It's a nice size too; I bumped down from a seventeen inch laptop (same brand) because it was just a bit too bulky. This one is fairly compact without sacrificing picture quality (in fact it's better than my seventeen incher).

The specs speak for themselves; the i5 is decent, fast enough for the everyday user and occasional gamer. The RAM is what sold me on this, it isn't tied to the system! The laptop has it's own dedicated card which means the 8GB of DDR3 is all for the system.

Layout of the keys is nice, not too squished together but not spaced far apart (as in again, my seventeen incher). Also having three USB ports, two of which are 3.0, is very nice.

Cons: Nothing worth noting as a 'con' per say.

Other Thoughts: The display is a matte display, which if ya didn't what that was (I didn't until Google), it's apparently one of two ways laptops choose to use in their displays. The other is 'glossy'...it could be debated all day which one is superior, but so far I'm not minding the matte at all. Some have complained about colors being warped towards the edges, but I haven't noticed those at all. Perhaps ya just need a keen eye for that sort of thing or I just got lucky.

The HDD drive is a bit on the slow side, clocking in at 5400 RPM. I'm pretty patient so it isn't a true con for me, but it does whine a bit when it hasn't been accessed in a while. Other than that, quiet as a mouse.

There is no LED for the power button (to tell you it's on), nor for things like the caps lock or num pad. A little thing but annoying nonetheless. Win8 has a helpful checkbox that plays a tone when you hit aforementioned buttons by the way.

The bloatware is quite extensive, I'd recommend wiping it and starting from scratch. If you're like me and would prefer Win7, don't do a full wipe/reload. Shrink the Win8 partition to a small size, say 20 or 30GB, and installing Win7 on the rest. ASUS, like everyone else, doesn't want you to have Win7 anymore so good luck finding drivers.

Overall it's a well built machine. Not the fastest, but far from the slowest. A good mid range PC that should be balanced enough for just about anyone.

1 out of 5 eggsThe computer had problems right out the box!

Pros: The CPU and video card is awesome! plays modern games on a decent resolution.

Cons: The screen blinks when moved, randomly goes into sleep mode and shuts off. Have to wake it back up. AND When plugged up to the power the screen repetitively starts blinking in the lowest screen brightness until I unplug it from the computer. The quality of the screen is horrible!

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop for the Price!

Pros: I bought this laptop as a low-medium budget alternative to the higher-end gaming laptops out there.

From my experience, it didn't feel right to drop $1000+ for a laptop capable of cranking out the games I play at the highest resolutions and 200+ FPS, so I went with this more economical option with the GT 840M.

I was blown away with how fast the laptop was at its price point. If you're looking for a good value entertainment laptop, you can't go wrong with this!

Cons: One of the major cons I found with this laptop is actually its initially aesthetically pleasing top. However, it is very prone to picking up fingerprints and such from oily or dirty fingers (which shouldn't necessarily be a problem if everyone washed their hands before using the computer...)

Aside from that, it came packed with bloatware.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Specs for Great Price!

Pros: - Specs
- Design
- Price
- Speed

Cons: - Touchpad (Not a deal-breaker since I use a wireless mouse, at least it is multi-touch and is big)
- Keyboard (Not too bad, but not as good as Lenovo or Thinkpad keyboards)

Other Thoughts: Great specs for the price! But the model is a budget model, so there are some slight drawbacks in build quality and mid-high range features. However, the plastic used for the lid and palm rests are really sturdy and not glossy to prevent finger prints. Build quality is poor on touchpad and keyboard, but otherwise it's a great laptop!
