3 out of 5 eggsDisk Tray Won't Eject

Pros: Can handle streaming video games

Cons: Mic and headset is one port, so you might have to buy an adapter.
Disk tray wont eject after being used only a handful of times.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: Speed, Linux / Ubuntu compatability, optical drive, Intel i5, discrete graphics card, 64bit, lots of RAM, USB 3.0 port

Cons: Wireless card, battery life

Other Thoughts: I've owned this since August 2014 (about 10 months now). I immediately installed Xubuntu 14.04 as a dual boot with Windows 8.1. I've only booted to Windows a few times since I've owned this. My only complaint with this laptop is the Broadcomm wireless card that comes installed is not Linux friendly. It caused intermittent connection problems when I was running Xubuntu. I quickly found that there was an Intel wireless card (7260) that had much better Linux compatibility. Unfortunately at the time NewEgg was out of stock so I had to purchase elsewhere. Watch a YouTube video of what screws to remove to gain access under the keyboard to replace this and now my connection is solid. I don't think this minor problem is worth subtracting an egg for.

This laptop does not have a huge battery. I use this as my primary computer while sitting on the couch or chair where I'm right next to an outlet so battery life doesn't mean much to me. About 3-4 hours of programming, web browsing, spreadsheets and the battery low indicator comes up.

Definitely would buy this laptop again, and definitely will consider ASUS on my next purchase, which I hope isn't for another 4 years or so.

2 out of 5 eggsTrackpad Broke Within 6 Months

Pros: The video card and audio are nice. The keyboard feels good to type on as well.

Cons: The trackpad stopped functioning after 6 months. I know it's a hardware problem, not a software problem, because if I press down really hard on the pad, there's some very limited movement, but if I were to try using it like you would with a normal trackpad, there is no response. I tried updating all my mouse drivers and everything, but still nothing. Pretty disappointed with that because I have to carry around a corded mouse everywhere now. Worked well for the first 6 months though.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Andy,

I'm glad to know that you are satisfied with the video and audio quality of the laptop. I certainly understand your concern regarding the touchpad failing to work after 6 months. If you think this is a hardware, rather than a software related, issue and need further assistance fixing it, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150328982 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

2 out of 5 eggsFrustrating Issues with Basic Usage

Pros: Most of the hardware is solid, and the default power settings are actually solid: if I run in Power Saver mode, I can get five or six hours of unplugged use out of the system (with a noticeable drop in performance), and if I run on High Performance mode there's no noticeable drop, and the battery still has an impressive lifespan. It's also a nice, light machine, easily transportable, and surprisingly durable (usually - I've encountered some issues that proved this machine to be EXTREMELY moisture sensitive). As a portable screen for watching TV or browsing the web, this is a solid machine.

Cons: Unfortunately I've had some terrible experiences with most of the attached input devices. I had issues with the keyboard losing keystrokes from day one, with about one in every fifteen keystrokes missing - I think it might be an issue with the design of the membrane under the keys themselves, since certain keys are more sensitive than others. I thought it might've just been an issue with the particular machine I received, but when I sent it in for repairs (thanks to the event that taught me just how sensitive this machine was to water - I spilled a few drops of water on the screen, didn't clean it completely, and found that large sections of the keyboard had failed the next day) I received a repaired product with identical issues to the ones I first encountered. Since I use this computer for work, and I type constantly for work, this is a HUGE problem - tasks that should take an hour or two end up taking three or four as I find myself constantly reviewing for missed keystrokes.

I can use an external keyboard to address the issue, but that makes using the computer as a mobile office platform untenable. I've also recently had major issues with the touchpad. After about four months of trouble-free pointing, the touchpad started failing about a minute into each boot. I corrected the issue by uninstalling ASUS' "SmartTouch" software, and it seems to be working again, but this is definitely a concern for novice users.

Paired with the keyboard issues I've experienced, establishes a pattern of unreliable input devices that make me regret this purchase.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a light desktop replacement that you can use with an external keyboard and mouse, this is a great machine. All of the under-the-hood hardware bits work fine, and I've been able to run some fairly demanding games on this machine without issue (when it's in Performance mode, of course). But if you're looking for a machine that you can reliably use on the go, or a laptop that you can just sit down and type with wherever, I would not recommend this machine.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
It's great to know that you are satisfied with the performance and battery life of the laptop. I certainly understand your concern regarding the issue with the keyboard and touchpad, these are isolated cases. Please allow some time to get use to the feel of the keys on the keyboard and the multi-touch function of the pad. In order to improve the touchpad responsiveness and stability, please install all recommended WINDOWS Update. Also, try updating the ASUS Smart Gesture utility and try to configure the touchpad within the application. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150177913 on the subject line.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Everything has worked great so far, no hardware issues. Upon receiving it I installed a Samsung 840 EVO 250g SSD and reinstalled Windows 8.1. For me, all of the drivers were easy to find on the Asus website and everything now works as intended. I am a college student and light to mid gamer, and Battlefield 4 works perfectly smooth on high settings with the GT840m. I would definitely suggest installing an SSD, as they are currently both affordable and made a HUGE difference in speed for me from the 5400 rpm 750g hard drive.

Speakers are good sounding for a laptop, i thought.

A lot of people commented on accidentally clicking the power button when trying to hit escape, I have yet to have that problem, knock on wood.

Love the keyboard.

All in all, I have VERY few complaints about this machine, I would highly suggest it.

Battery life is about 6 hours I would say?

Cons: Some other points however, are various things that, though advertised, I found kind of disappointed or lack-luster:

It does pick up fingerprints pretty easily, especially the top with the circular design. Also, the dots design above the keyboard may not be that visible in the pictures but they don't exactly look great to me.

Track pad does get in the way when typing/other things. When I play video games I tend to turn it off so I don't accidentally hit it with my finger. Hardly a con.

Webcam is terrible, but I'm not that worried about that.

Other Thoughts: Great machine, would definitely recommend it (with an SSD) to any others.

2 out of 5 eggs3 Months Later

Pros: -Lightweight
-Good external ports for my uses
-touchpad with Asus's smart-gesture is one of the best touchpads ive used.

Cons: -Worst laptop keyboard I have ever had the displeasure to use, keys are not responsive, my F12 key broke off after only 3 months of use, and the keys shine extremely fast.
- The 1080p display has horrible color reproduction, and display scaling on this 15 inch screen is awful. Turning the Gamma to its lowest setting in windows makes the display almost too dark, and at normal levels washes out all colors.
-Even with a mobile i5, and 8GB ram, the system is often laggy and unresponsive, but this is expected of a low end mobile CPU.

Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop for use at college, and I have to do a lot of typing, so the quality of the keyboard and display are what earned this 2 eggs from me. It does serve its function, but is a pain to use. If you are considering this laptop for work/school, or other things that require a good bit of writing, I would consider another laptop.
I will RMA this for a warrenty repair of the keyboard when I get the chance...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Chris,

Thank you for the positive comment. I apologize if you were dissatisfied with the laptop's keyboard and display or video quality. Please ensure all recommended WINDOWS update were installed in order to improve the keyboard's responsiveness. Please avoid using the keyboard while WINDOWS Update or an antivirus software is running in the background. These utility program utilize lots of system resources that will cause temporary unresponsiveness to the keyboard. In regards to the dispaly quality, please try updating the video driver and adjust the settings using ASUS Spendid utility. Should you need further technical assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N141156594 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome Laptop

Pros: This laptop is an awesome buy. I decided to get this laptop for mainly school work, but I also wanted the ability to play some games. This laptop definitely won't be running anything on max but I play most games just fine: BF4, AC3, Counter Strike: GO, Alan Wake, Diablo III, Tomb Raider, etc. For the price this laptop can't be beat sure it's not perfect or the most powerful but I was on a budget and this thing has been a beast so far. I would definitely recommend this to someone who's looking for something that can basically do it all but can't spend $1,000 plus on a laptop.

Cons: The only cons I currently have with this laptop is that the screen is definitely not the best and could definitely be better. It doesn't have but one good viewing angle and the resolution could use some work but if your like me you probably have a TV or spare monitor you could plug it into, but really I've gotten used to the screen and it's not a big issue. Also it's awesome that it has a number pad but it is really crammed together in order to fit; the rest of the keyboard is spaced just fine. Would prefer it to have an SSD but for the price the 750 gb HDD does just fine and the SSD is something that can upgraded. The pros definitely out way the cons.

Other Thoughts: Overall I would say don't hesitate one bit and buy this laptop;
Asus is a great brand. A lot of reviews have been complaining about the power key being right above the esc key, but I have yet to accidentally hit the power key instead of esc.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Laptop!

Pros: -Very quiet
-Great performance thanks to the i5,840m,8gb ram, its a solid laptop.
-1080p screen
-Full number pad
-Got a great price, $630

Cons: -The Track pad's left and right button are part of the pad, didn't care for this design.
-The converter was at the end of the cord where the plug to the wall is, i fine the ones with the converter brick in the middle better, because mine gets unplugged very easily.
-No back lite keyboard, if it did it would be perfect.

Other Thoughts: Was the cheapest 1080p screen+ dedicated graphics card laptop at the time but its well worth it. It can run BF3 at 1080 on medium settings at around 60 fps! Deadspace 3 at max settings/1080p it kept 60 the whole time. Not bad for only paying 630 for a entry level gaming laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop, cheap build

Pros: First off got this laptop for school and for moderate gaming on the go. Specs are great and its decent bang for your buck laptop. I play older mmorpg games like DDO on very high settings with 70-90 fps and more modern games like Titanfall on med/high settings with 0 lag. It is very thin (thinner than I thought) and is pretty light.

Cons: The stuff this laptop is made off feels pretty cheap. The screen itself bends with ease and sometimes makes me nervous if I close it to quickly. Also this laptop came with a lot of bloatware. After running a few maleware scans it seemed to go away.
