2 out of 5 eggsBroke after 3 months

Pros: I loved this laptop at first because it was beautiful and fast, especially because I upgraded the slow 1TB HDD to a much faster 256GB SSD which made it perform like a tablet.

Aesthetics:
- Has a nice metal finish making it feel sturdy
- Has a "Republic of Gamers" logo right above the keyboard (could be a con if you don't like it)
- Rubber feet on the bottom make give it good footing on desks

Tech Specs Pros:
- Great graphics card (GTX 850m plays most games on ultra without stutter)
- Fast processor (Intel i7 4710HQ is more processing power than you need for most tasks)
- 12GB RAM means you don't have to add your own (anything 8GB or above is all you really need unless you use RAMDisk)
- DVD drive is probably unnecessary with everything being downloadable now, but still good for legacy or replacing it with a hard drive adapter bay for a second HDD
- Windows 8.1. A lot of people hate it but I really like this operating system, and I'm a Computer Science undergrad. It's simple to use and offers both a desktop interface exactly like Windows 7 and a tile interface with a great search feature.
- The external subwoofer was nice of them to throw in, but honestly I never use it. I would rather have had it integrated.
- Stay cool, I've never really had a problem with overheating but I also have a cooling pad that this stays on most of the time when gaming.

Cons: - They promised a 178 degree viewing angle IPS display and lied! This comes with a cheap TN display that gives MAYBE a 30 degree viewing angle before showing color distortion. I felt cheated by ASUS for this. (See UPDATE)
- Keyboard back-light only has 3 brightness levels and one color, and sometimes the function key to change the brightness doesn't even work (restarting usually fixes this).
- Pretty bad battery life, but honestly this isn't a problem for me because I keep it plugged in most of the time.
- It's heavy, but again not bad because I don't travel much with it.
- The plate on the bottom that you take off for replacing parts only shows about 30% of the components. All you can upgrade from there is the RAM, hard drive, and (questionably) the wifi chip. I say questionably because there is a piece of plastic just barely blocking the corner screw of the chip from being fully unscrewed, which was very annoying and probably worthy of being it's own con in this list.

The laptop had issues after about 2-3 months of use, and so far I've had to send it in 2 times.
- First time, it would boot up and allow for normal operation for about a full minute, and then just shut itself off with no warning. When I sent it in they returned it a few weeks later fixed saying that the "LED screen was leaking". Really? Maybe you should have provided the better quality IPS screen that was advertised in the specs rather than the cheapo TN display that it came with!
- About a week after I got it back, another problem occurred that was even worse. The laptop wouldn't even turn on. Without the power cord in, nothing would work and the pressing the power button did nothing, not even booting to BIOS. With the power cord in, the power button would light up along with two indicator lights in the front, but still pressing the power button did nothing. I just sent it in again to get this fixed and I'm waiting to get it back.
- I've had nothing but problems with ROG laptops. This is the second I've owned. The first one cost me $2000 and it bricked after I tried a BIOS upgrade, but would also BSOD frequently. I've lost faith in this line of gaming laptops and I likely won't buy another ROG after this one bites the dust, which looks like it might be sooner than later given it's current failure rate and only a 1 year warranty.

Other Thoughts: In the end, I don't think that this laptop was worth getting given the troubles that it's given me and the false advertisement about the display quality.
If I hadn't had these issues, I would have given 4 stars because it is a nice laptop and it's inexpensive for what you get, but they still lied about the screen, and picture quality is important to me. (see update below)
I say buy it if you will mainly use it as a gaming desktop replacement that you may travel with occasionally, but handle it with care because it is not the best quality build.

UPDATE:
I actually see now that Newegg changed the description of the display to be TN, which is accurate. I'm still leaving my rating at 2 stars though because ASUS website still has it with IPS being a main selling point.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat deal

Pros: This laptop had already been on my wish list for weeks and I risked an open box to save a few hundred dollars. It was so worth it. It arrived on time and very, very well packaged excluding the original box but, the components were included.
I spent a few days optimizing windows 8.1 and setting preferences with the drives and I was shocked at the performance I got out of it. 8.1 is a great OS for heavy use or gaming and I've never had the laptop heat up beyond 70°.

I get between 35-45 fps on most new gen games on high-ultra settings and I've experience no lag during online gaming. In terms of performance it easily outperforms all next gen consoles, but even more impressively a desktop at the same price-point.

Cons: Note: My complaints are minor and otherwise it's a great laptop. Most of the drawbacks I was aware of when I bought it and it was a compromise for the price so I'm not gonna leave a bad review because it doesn't perform like a laptop out of this price range.

I had a few issues with the battery not charging which were easily fixed and one blue screen of death for the same reason.

Some times on booting up disk utilization would be between 90-100%. Since it wasn't that was out of the box I feel one of my tweaks might have caused that.

The backlit keyboard, which is great, only lights up past the boot screen so typing you password in a dark room can be a pain. That might have to do with the power profile so it might be revocable.

Using a slower drive haven't proven to be an issue at all and the read and write speed is quite passable for my uses. for users looking for more speed I'd recommend buying an SSD to replace the optical drive.

1 out of 5 eggsGot a defective system

Pros: appearance
performance(when its working)

Cons: after 1 week of use got blue screen restart loop

Other Thoughts: Bought this laptop to be used for college/gaming while on the go, after two weeks of use I start getting the Blue screen restart loop so I rebooted the operating system multiple times. Eventually I got fed up and decided to send it in to Asus service after stating that I have already reloaded the operating system and suggest it should be a hard drive issue. They send it back one week later stating that they reloaded the operating system, as soon as I start using it again I am faced with the same issue lets hope sending it back a second time will actually get the problem fixed.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for the positive comment. I apologize if you are experiencing a blue screen of death. If this is occuring after a WINDOWS Update, please run System Restore and after a successful System Restore, please install all recommended WINDOWS Updates manually in the Control Panel, Windows Update before using the system. We recommend using a LAN connection to speed up the update process. If you need further technical assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N141086185 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

4 out of 5 eggsvery satisfied

Pros: *doesn't overheat a lot
*quiet
*plays my steam videos games pretty well (assassins creed, portal, etc, haven't played any mmo's yet though)
*sleek
*audio is pretty decent

Cons: *fingerprint magnet, clean often (not important)
*audio sometimes makes a weird robotic noise (not often)
*graphics are decent but no where near mac pro, hard to get used to at first but now i don't notice
*windows 8.1 (maybe can be changed? i haven't tried yet, frankly im now used to windows 8.1)
*tiny bit of bloatware (can be changed)

Other Thoughts: Great step up from my macbook pro (circa 2007). The graphics are still no where nears macs, i even put them side by side and was tripped up but now i don't notice. Plays games very well with short wait time and the computer gets warm at most, the fan only got going a few times. Fast, reliable and the only real problem is windows 8.1! I definitely recommend this for the majority of gamers out there! :)

5 out of 5 eggsLightning Fast Gaming & Work Laptop

Pros: Sleek, fast, intuitive. not too much bloatware installed. the Nvidia driver is great. I've used it for both gaming and work and it boots up in seconds. expensive but worth the cost. battery life is also solid, lasting for 5 hours as advertised, though only when not gaming and on battery saver mode. otherwise it still lasts 2-4 hours which is great.

Cons: only complaint I have is that the battery, as good as it is, is not always accurately displayed. sometimes when it's plugged in/just been unplugged but at full charge, it says it will run for 10 hours. It does not run for 10 hours...

sometimes when it's on low charge the battery says 20 minutes, and may last 30-40. It's likely no fault of the product itself, but moreso a design flaw in the Windows 8/ general windows software.

Other Thoughts: The style and backlit keyboard on this are absolutely fantastic. i'm about a month or two into using the computer and so far the battery life hasnt diminished, which was an issue i had with my last Asus. The hinges seem okay but we'll see if they last...

anyways, great product. worth the 1,000 i put down for it, easily. Looks radical and has a great feeling keyboard (backlit!!). Thanks NewEgg!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat machine with some flaws

Pros: Keyboard feels pretty good. The metal coating also looks great. The weight is not as heavy as most people think. Overall quality is excellent.

Cons: screen is ok when reading western characters. But when it comes to other languages such as chinese it becomes awful. Asus please change the screen to a better one!

Other Thoughts: Things like tiny subwoofer is just silly. The battery could use some upgrade.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap price for nice Specs. Its fast and pretty light compared to my previous 15.6" asus laptop.

Cons: My 3 biggest issues with this system and what ultimately led to me returning it was that is didn't support windows 7 at all despite the well known dislike of windows 8. There are ways to deal with this but considering its a grand for the system they should support windows 7 still. The second is fact that there was only a single HDD bay. If the description had been better and explained the 1 bay( I checked ASUS site and it didn't say 1 bay either but I noticed later that others said dual HDD support) i would have bought a bigger SSD to use with it. The third which I didn't care enough at that point to try and resolve was that even when it was plugged in with full battery some games like FF14 would only recognize the intel graphics and not the vid card. Not sure if that was a laptop functionality issue or a software issue though

Other Thoughts: If they had listed the description better I probably would have learned to deal with windows 8 and just bought a bigger SSD.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Machine But,

Pros: Many
CPU, GPU, # of RAM...

Cons: DISPLAY

Other Thoughts: Display is not IPS as what is stated in ASUS page (http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/G56JK/) and a sticker tab found after open the lid upon receiving and opening the box (saying a 178 degree FHD full HD IPS display) . The display is a TN and HWiNFO32 indicated the display is AUO B156HTN03.6. by AU Optronics.
The display's performance is far from what is stated on this alternative page (http://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/Gaming_Products/), saying
“View every detail from any angle in Full HD”. (without mentioning IPS). The acceptable view is not 178 degree, definitely not "any angle". It is about 45 degrees to the left and right, even narrower up and down.

Wondering is ASUS offering resolution regarding this conflicts between their statements on the web pages plus the sticker came with the machine and what is really in the hands of the customers.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Value

Pros: Excellent Graphics in game
Really cheap for the components inside
FAST AS ****
Excellent Screen
Operates relatively cool
Excellent appearance
Great light-up keyboard
Tons of storage
More RAM than you'll ever need
Webcam low megapixel, but very nice image

Cons: HEAVY
Not so portable
Preloaded with tons of useless garbage
No SSD (resulting in common max usage of loud hard drive)

Other Thoughts: Replacing the hard drive in this laptop with an SSD is an upgrade that will make this device run like laptops well beyond this price range.
I have no idea how to practically carry this thing. At 6 pounds it's a monster, but it runs better than anything that was made to be portable. If you're buying this, consider investing in a laptop bag or backpack because you'll want to keep it safe.
I think the parameters for running the fan speed should be adjusted. Depending on work load, it will shoot up for no reason because the idle speed is too low (but at that point it's dead silent)
This gets 4 eggs simply for portability issues. If you don't care about that, or you're willing to work around it, then buy this.
