5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I love the dual screens! switching back and forth from the touch and regular screen is easy. The quality of both screens is good and the start up speed is instant.

Cons: I have no cons at this time.

Other Thoughts: I am a college student and this computer is amazing! Perfect size and weight and great for watching movies.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Computer

Pros: Great Keyboard, Screens have great resolution, Fast, and allot of interfaces, SD card, 2 USB, 2 video and it looks good. The price was great.

Cons: needs Touch screen on back and front.

Other Thoughts: I wanted larger hard drive but I am too impatient to wait for it to come out. Make sure you update the drivers (2) before you upgrade to Win 8.1. For 2 screens it runs a while on battery power.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent form factor

Pros: I have been evaluating a number of form factors for my systems at home. The HP Envy Touchsmart, HP Revolve, Dell XPS 18, Surface Pro 3, iPad, etc and have landed on this as the best balance. The use as a laptop and tablet is a great balance. I now have three of them with Windows 8.1 and do not have any issues. Of course, I did update to the latest BIOS and driver versions so that may be contributing to others' problems. As a note, I did remove the McAfee AV since that seemed to interfere with the Windows Update process.

Battery life - very good - about 4 hours of constant use (not gaming)
Presentation mode - I use mine for demos and presentations for my work. Excellent for this use.
Relatively light - not as small or light as a pure tablet, but close.

Cons: The update to Windows 8.1 can pose some issues but is not difficult with all updates and drivers in place. Make sure you have those in place before attempting. I have not seen any of the buggy issues with the display that others have noted. There is also a lock screen button on the side (so it does NOT convert when the lid is closed)

Other Thoughts: I really like the approach that ASUS took with this hybrid laptop. I think they have a winner but it seems to be marred, somewhat, with users reporting update issues.

5 out of 5 eggsSlick

Pros: This is an ideal selection for people who want a tablet formfactor but can't dispense with laptop utility entirely. Works great as a tablet, works great as a laptop and very sturdy construction.

I got this as a replacement for a flimsy Dell laptop that was also windows 8 but without touch and with a traditional laptop screen. I was considering a traditional tablet, but I am glad I selected this instead.

The functionality is intuitive and ability to be flexible with the screens (mirror, tablet only, laptop only, dual screens) is a game-changer. This would be a great machine for presenting to clients one-on-one or to a very small group of clients.

It is redundant, but I cannot applaud Asus enough for their sturdy construction.

Cons: The few issues that I am seeing are that the battery seems a little short, and the heat dissipation vents make it a little touchy. Doesn't work well on my lap as fabric blocks the vents.

When it gets hot it is a bit noisy.

Other Thoughts: THIS is great form factor - I wish there were more choices using this 2-in-1 space. Great Idea using opposing screens rather than the wonky rotating screens and flimsy hinged screens! I don't care if the cost is a little more, I am more comfortable using this knowing that I won't break the screen opening and closing the book. Tablet functionality is phenomenal.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat product ruined by some glitchy BIOS/Software glitches

Pros: Excellent display, Solid build, Good value for money, Instant on, Super light.

Cons: Windows 8.1 ruined it because of lack of compatible BIOS from Asus, Less than decent battery life, External display is not as good as internal.

Other Thoughts: Let me start by saying this. This is probably the best ultrabook you will get for $699. It is a solid build and can go head to head with macbook air/pro. I would even say that this would win.

I bought this ultrabook 2 weeks ago and I have been messing around with it all day all night. I have taken enough time to give my honest and best review possible. So this is not a review that I am doing overnight.

Excellent inside display, and I am afraid that cannot be said about the outer display. You will see the difference once switch back to tablet mode. I will come back to that in a second, but yeah ASUS claims to have 1080p resolution for both screen but difference is rather clear to see. That's the biggest downside of this ultrabook.

Now, switching between laptop and tablet mode will get creep you out once you update to 8.1 and I assume at this point everyone have updated to 8.1. I have seen other reviews in which ASUS tells to update the BIOS to 209, but I already have BIOS 209 out of the box. I even tried the link posted in other reviews and downloaded the BIOS from there. When I tried installing BIOS 209, it says BIOS file is older than current installed version. It will fix the problem once you restart the computer but that will be only for one time. It is such a shame that some minor BIOS compability issue is ruining the whole experience of having a tablet and laptop on a single device.

Now I like this product, and I am not gonna return it. But that does not mean that ASUS shouldn't fix this issue. It is kinda irritating that whenever I want, the tablet mode won't work.

Please Please ASUS fix this issue, I am literally begging.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for considering the Taichi31 the best UltraBook that you will get at a reasonable price. I certainly understand your issue with the switching mode after upgrading to WINDOWS 8.1. Besides updating to BIOS version 209, the old VGA driver needs to be uninstalled in the Device Manager and install VGA driver version V10.18.10.3412. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N140921715 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

2 out of 5 eggslots of issues

Pros: -Decent specs for the money
-sturdy built

Cons: This thing have given me a lot of problems and i can never seem to get it to work right. I tried updating some of the drivers so windows 8 apps would work but for some reason i cant get it to function as a tablet or switch screens easily (maybe i didn't download them correctly?). When I am using it as a tablet the auto-rotate doesn't work. Also the laptop screen not being touch screen really kills the vibe especially since its has windows 8.

Other Thoughts: Has potential to be a really good ultra book if it didn't have so many issues. I cant say I would recommend it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize if you are experiencing stability issues with the laptop. In order to improve system stability and performance, please install all recommended WINDOWS Updates manually before upgrading to WINDOWS 8.1 before using the system. We recommend using a LAN connection to speed up the update process. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N140905636 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggsThe upgrade to Windows 8.1 WILL break it

Pros: Excellent build, durable, fast, responsive, great battery life, feels solid when you hold it, both screens looks great.

Cons: Windows 8.1 will break the function of using the touch screen. Yaay Windows you had one job to do.

Other Thoughts: I work in IT for a nonprofit agency and we have about 20 of these deployed to our users.

If you installed the 8.1 upgrade you don't have to spend more money to fix it. Simply save all important docs, pics, music etc to a thumb drive and then do a system restore to the earliest date possible. I can't remember the exact restore setting I choose but I believe it was one that kept all the softer and files untouched. (but I saved all important items first just in case) That should fix the issue.

This happened to me and once I did that I was back on Win 8 and had full touch screen capabilities again.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for posting a review on the Taichi 31. The Taichi’s touchscreen should work fine on after the update to 8.1 if you update the BIOS and the VGA driver. Both of these files can be found at our support site here:

http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=3&m=TAICHI31&hashedid=fiVe3p07zwAjDwV9

If you happen to already have a unit with the latest BIOS, all you would have to do is uninstall the old VGA driver and update to version V10.18.10.3412. Also, make sure all your other drivers are up to date as well. Again, detailed instructions can be found at our support site. Or if you are still having difficulties updating, please feel free to shoot me an e-mail at cl-tien@asus.com. My support team will be more than happy to help.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Decent build quality
Backlight keys

Cons: 8.1 update ruins computer
Screen switching becomes glitchy

Other Thoughts: So I bought this computer for college about 2 weeks ago. It came with windows 8 but I needed to update to 8.1 for half the apps to be compatible. After the update, the back touchscreen became hopelessly glitchy or didn't work at all. I spent $60 at my local computer retailer to have them flash BIOS 209 which fixed the issue for a good four hours. After helpful customer service, I sent it back to Newegg for a refund. The package is still in shipping so we'll see if I do get the refund. It really is a shame. The computer is really well built and its a great concept, but the update ruins it. Wouldn't buy again! Hopefully this helps!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

The Taichi’s touchscreen should work fine on after the update to 8.1 if you update both the BIOS and the VGA driver. Both of these files can be found at our support site here:

http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=3&m=TAICHI31&hashedid=fiVe3p07zwAjDwV9

Your BIOS version is correct, but I would check to see if you have the right VGA driver version. The version you are looking for should be version V10.18.10.3412. If you are still having difficulties updating, please feel free to shoot me an e-mail at cl-tien@asus.com. Our support team will be more than happy to help.
