1 out of 5 eggsGood Systems, Controversial Design

This review is from: ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 Gaming Laptop 4th Generation Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50 GHz) 16 GB Memory 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3 GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: -Great System for a laptop/desktop.
-Solid Graphic card performance.

Cons: - Integrated battery, you can't replace the laptop battery unless you send to ASUS for replacement.
- Windows key no where to be found unless you use 3rd parity software to get the license key from the OS
-Flimsy touch pad, the touch pad died withing 2 or three month of light use. Paired the laptop with a mouse.
- Hard Drive (HD) needs to be replace with a better HD from WD, Seagate, or Solid State the included HD starts to loose performance withing a month of use.

Other Thoughts: -Customer service is good, but you have to send the laptop off to California or Utah for repairs and it can take at least 10 days before you get it back.
-If you want to get bang for your money get the extended warranty for the laptop, I which I new of the battery before purchasing.

UPDATE: My second G751 that I bought (I bought two before I knew how bad they were) just went bad. The laptop goes to sleep during activities and at unexplained times. After some searching found out that this is a motherboard issue. I have no warranty and know I have a paperweight for a $1400 laptop.
Customer Service is the worse. As I have said before stay away from peripherals from ASUS.

5 out of 5 eggsBeautiful, Solid and Fast!

This review is from: ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 Gaming Laptop 4th Generation Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50 GHz) 16 GB Memory 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3 GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: This laptop was my first major investment/upgrade after using an ASUS X551CA for about 3.5 years. I must say - everything about this laptop is stellar. Beautiful, crisp screen with deep, deep blacks and very white whites. The Windows 10 installation was very easy and I had almost zero bloatware. A lot of people complain about Win10 being intrusive, but you can simply turn off a lot of those types of services by doing the advanced installation when you first setup Win10 and turn off everything you don't want. Very easy to do if one just spends a bit of time looking into it.

Super fast - I can start up (be at login screen) from a complete shutdown in about 6-8 seconds.
Image quality - a tad bit warm, but not much of a bother for me since I bought an LG 25" ultrawide IPS monitor for serious work. For gaming, I don't mind it.

Build - this laptop is SOLID. Feels like a tank, and has a nice matte finish across the entire laptop.

Cons: One of the few things I don't like about some laptops is that they have the headphone, mic and other inputs on the mouse side and sometimes I bump into it while gaming. This one has that setup, and I'd prefer it on the other side, but it's definitely not a major issue.

On occasion, I'd accidentally touch the CD drive button and open it; be careful you don't do this by accident and damage the open drive when putting it away.

Other Thoughts: I would definitely recommend this laptop as it is a perfect "bridge" device between lower-end machines and high-end machines. The specs are more than enough for the serious gamer on a budget. It is heavy, but that is something to expect from a laptop of this caliber.

2 out of 5 eggsOne year life cycle!

This review is from: ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 Gaming Laptop 4th Generation Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50 GHz) 16 GB Memory 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3 GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Great performing gaming laptop for 1 year.

Cons: Dead at 13 months, will not boot on battery or on AC power. A local computer technician with over 30 years experience couldn't get it running. He thinks the non-removable battery is dead, but could NOT check it without disassembling the whole thing. I have heard there are reports of similar problems.

Other Thoughts: I would not have bought if I knew the battery can't be removed. I have been a loyal ROG Maximus Hero mb in a water cooled rig.

3 out of 5 eggsPretty good

This review is from: ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 Gaming Laptop 4th Generation Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50 GHz) 16 GB Memory 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3 GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: -Powerful and Fast for the price
-Excellent cooling
-Plenty of I/O
-OK battery(my joke is its more like a mobile desktop than a laptop)
-Easy to swap out some components (installed a SSD in primary slot, still have the factory 1TB in secondary)
-Keyboard and touch pad are pretty good for a laptop
-Durable
-IPS Screen looks great

Cons: -I'm having the same problem as what another user said. The sound quality is flawed. It sounds like it has a blown or loose speaker and is very raspy and virbates even at half volume and has been like this since I first opened it.
-The disk drive button is placed in the worst possible spot. I accidentally have opened the tray while moving it 1000's of times in the last 8 months
-Finger print magnet
-The shadowplay key above the ESC key is just stupid. Not only is it a feature I'll never use, I press it accidentally all the time when reaching for ESC and it disturbs gameplay

Other Thoughts: I don't regret the purchase, it has served me very well so far. I just wish the quality control would have been better because of the speaker and the layout for the shadowplay key and disk drive thought out a bit more.
I have been meaning to send it in to fix the blown/loose speaker but cannot be without my laptop for over a month. I am constantly traveling for work and bring it everywhere. Maybe I'll try to do it right before my warranty expires.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Mike,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, we are sorry to hear your experience with the ASUS laptop. I understand that you are disappointed with the unit's speaker. Please allow me to assist you. First can I have the unit's serial number for me to check the units warranty and in case I need to process an RMA. When you first received the unit how is the speaker? when did you experience the speaker problem? have you tried calibrating the the speaker settings to try to fix the issue?

For further technical assistance or if you want to discuss this matter with me, please email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and put case #N151100909 in the subject line for a reference. I'm here to help you and all others with these issues, as our customer loyalty department dedicated to bringing a resolution to all issues related to our products.

3 out of 5 eggsNot completely satisfied

This review is from: ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 Gaming Laptop 4th Generation Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50 GHz) 16 GB Memory 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3 GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Great video quality, love the keyboard layout, everything seems to run smooth

Cons: I don't think they put much effort into the sound quality. It's absolutely terrible, Whenever you play something above 50% volume it sounds very raspy, like a blown speaker and your computer vibrates. Also the left click button on the touchpad went out in just a few months, build quality seems rushed.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Paul,
We appreciate you sharing your experience with the G751JT. Please accept our sincerest apologies regarding the audio failing. I would be happy to process a RMA for a proper assessment. Provide me with a detailed description of your issue including your name, address, phone number, model and serial of your device and we can explore your options. 5 out of 5 eggsBeast of a Laptop

This review is from: ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 Gaming Laptop 4th Generation Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50 GHz) 16 GB Memory 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3 GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Powerful and Fast
Excellent cooling
Plenty of I/O
Decent battery
Easy to swap out some components
Backlit keyboard
Keyboard and touchpad are pretty good for a laptop
Durable
IPS Screen looks great

Cons: A little bit of bloatware in default install
No USB 2 (not an issue for everyone)
A bit big/bulky compared to some laptops

Other Thoughts: This thing is a beast of a laptop, in every sense of the word. It's big fir sure, but it feels durable as well. It's as powerful as most people would ever need and still manages to have great temps. In fact, the cooling is so good that you could actually overclock this laptop, which is all but unheard of.

It's got all the bells and whistles that one would expect from a high-tier gaming laptop, but does skip on a few things that may matter to some people (USB 2, namely, and only because I have a couple things that don't like USB 3), but otherwise, I couldn't ask for more

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Quality Components/Build

This review is from: ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 Gaming Laptop 4th Generation Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50 GHz) 16 GB Memory 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3 GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Very fast for the price. Ran great until it didn't, I purchased the laptop in February, it's been nothing but problems since August.

Cons: Fans are inaccessible to clean without tearing the entire laptop apart, including lifting the keyboard off of the motherboard. The cable's connecting the keyboard to the motherboard are ultra-fragile and aren't meant to be disconnected. Persistent loud noise and back left fan (GPU fan) issues. Attempts to fix resulted in the motherboard connector to the trackpad and backlit LED's snapping off. It's really cheaply made, and taking it apart without destroying it is quite difficult as a result.

I wouldn't recommend this laptop to anyone. Go with another brand. I've been an Asus loyalist since I began putting my own desktop machines together in the late 90's. After writing off problems with my previous Asus gaming laptop as a fluke, and then experiencing different but equally frustrating build quality issues with this one, I'm done.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Travis,

Thank you for the positive comment that you have provided on the laptop. The laptop is actually easy to disassemble if you are familiar on how to do it or if you have an instruction manual available. The build quality of the unit is decent. All materials that were used are within the industry's quality standard. If you need further assistance with the laptop, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N151013658 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

4 out of 5 eggsBeefy Machine, Minor Problems

This review is from: ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 Gaming Laptop 4th Generation Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50 GHz) 16 GB Memory 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3 GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: The system performs incredibly well for a laptop; it's apparent that you get what you pay for. The video card and the ability to extend up to 32GiB of RAM are a nice feature; however, my biggest surprise was that I could play KSP (a CPU-bound game) in 1080p mode without any stutter while I was recording. For the most part, I felt like I got my money's worth with this system and I wouldn't have a problem recommending it to others in the future.

The keyboard is notably comfortable. I am used to scissor-switch keyboards on laptops and I find that most chiclet keyboards do not have keys that travel far enough; this is an exception, however. If you're worried about the keyboard quality, I can assure you that the keyboard is not an issue on this machine.

The screen is crisp and bright; in fact, my only issue with the screen is that the lowest brightness setting is still quite... bright. It's not really a problem unless you're using it while you're trying to sleep; if you are, shame on you, and shame on me, because I use this thing in bed all the time.

Cons: The macro keys are placed in what turns out to be an annoying place if you're a gamer. I've hit the "record" key too often when I was trying to hit escape, which has a nasty habit of interrupting gameplay. Furthermore, the "keys" don't send any scancodes through the keyboard driver; it appears to be separate device. This means that I cannot easily map those keys in my games or recording software, and actually remapping the Steam and Record keys requires a registry hack. It would be excellent if ASUS updated their macro tool to allow for this, because I hate big picture mode in Steam and I use OpenBroadcaster to record.

The battery either has hysteresis issues or the included wall wart cannot keep up with the power draw. I've seen the reported charge go down as far as 95% within the first couple of days (even though it was plugged in).

Make sure that you have a spare USB key to acquire a backup installation if you want to do a clean install and want some of the OEM software. The vendor doesn't supply any media, and not all of the software supplied by the OEM appears to be available on their website.

Other Thoughts: I was looking to replace my Thinkpad T510 a while back, and this seemed like the best choice (albeit with some uncertainty at the time). My former machine lasted about 6 years and I think I should be able to meet that goal with this system. I like that there's a clear upgrade path as with my Thinkpad.

The machine's weight is surprisingly not a problem. You might think that 8.4lbs is pretty heavy, and it can take you by surprise if you're not careful; however, even though it's a full 2 pounds heavier than the machine that preceded it, I found that it wasn't a problem to throw it into a shoulder bag and carry it around. If you are a petite sort of thing, it may be a problem. I am definitely out of shape and still did not find the weight of my new machine to be a burden.

1 out of 5 eggsWas good until it was not

This review is from: ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 Gaming Laptop 4th Generation Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50 GHz) 16 GB Memory 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3 GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Powerful, affordable, very quiet., quality components.

Cons: Requires tweaking out of the box, IPS screen with some black crush, drive bay 1 has no m.2 socket although the circuitry is there, heavy, bulky, no G-sync although the video card supports it (licensing issue), built in battery, inaccessible RAM modules, slow unhelpful customer service.

Other Thoughts: So my affair with this machine was short lived, too short lived! Out of the box I had to mess with it a lot to fix some the IPS monitor black crush issues and some well known sound issues. But after all the initial hassle it felt like it was well worth it. I enjoyed using it everyday and I was impressed by how well it handled anything I threw at it.

Albeit, two moths later I decided it was time to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD, I bought a nice quality drive from here and went about the installation adventure. I did not like how I could not cut power from the laptop. But if Asus left the battery integrated, they must know what they are doing and my board does not have power running through it, right?

The installation didn't go too smoothly, the cloning did not copy the recovery partition correctly so I needed to go back and create a recovery thumb-drive, this takes 1 hour to create a 13GB file (lol). Anyhow, I removed the old HDD, install shiny ssd, recovered from thumb-drive (another hour!) and then voila! booted into fresh windows in 10 seconds! everything is working perfect. I was all happy. I go back to install my 1TB HDD in the 2nd bay, I screw back the latch flip it back over and to my demise after all that the laptop would not turn on.
Ok, back to square 1, remove SSD, back to the old HDD... Still no life (arghhhh)! OK remove all drives try to get to bios.... all blackness. My heart sank. I called Asus up, RMA they tell me. So, reluctantly. I do.

Now after 7 days on the fedex truck, they got my laptop and been holding it for 7 days more. I check their support website often, most of the time it is down but when it's up it says repair in progress... I contacted support to ask how long and if I can upgrade the return from 7 days ground to 2nd air (I'm willing to pay). They tell me the best people are working on your laptop and tell me nothing more. Disregarding my request.

I'm a tech person myself, I get it, things get broken, but to pay this much and get this low quality customer support is not something I can accept. This would be my last Asus product.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Tomer,

I apologize for the inconvenience the delay in service may have caused you. If you still didn't receive your laptop back from warranty service, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N151013682 on the subject line.

2 out of 5 eggsAwesome but issues

This review is from: ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 Gaming Laptop 4th Generation Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50 GHz) 16 GB Memory 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3 GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Powerful
Fast
Gaming beast
This laptop fills the bill for gaming.

Cons: Monitor-Black screen 30%-50% on cold boot
Battery-not great and not replaceable
finger print magnet
I kept this laptop for 1 month hoping to figure out how to fix the black screen issue, but could not. Called asus and we tried everything we could and had no success finally they wanted me to send it in for repair. But then I would have a refurbished laptop, but this is new. Not an option. I am sending it back for a refund and newegg was great about it. The battery should last longer this is a laptop meant to be mobile, right. Oh and it is not replaceable by non technical people they say. As for finger prints it is a magnet but it does easily clean up, it is just that you need to do it very often.

Other Thoughts: On the whole this is a great laptop. I am going to try again as it did everything I needed and more. The computer is a beast and I have not found anything that compares at this time, even though it has issues. The finger print problem is annoying but not a deal breaker. The battery should last longer but it did make around two hours. As for the black screen problem, I believe it is a timing issue on cold boot for most of these laptops. And Asus should look into fixing the issue. I am very disappointed in Asus as this problem has been around for quite a while. I will update this post when I get another one and let you know what happens.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Terry,

I certainly understand your concern regarding the black screen issue on the laptop. Please try to update the chipset and video driver and the BIOS, if one of these are outdated. If the problem persists after installing all recommended WINDOWS update and system update, I recommend sending it in for service. If you need help sending it in, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N151013710 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.
