Question 1

There is much confusion over the M.2 slot specifications for this laptop - whether it is PCIe or SATA, and if NVMe is supported or only AHCI. I haven't seen anyone successfully use a Samsung 950 Pro NVMe PCIe drive. A few have stated a Samsung SM951 AHCI PCIe drive worked. Most say that a SATA drive, typically Crucial or Samsung, worked.

If you have added your own M.2 SSD to this GL552VW-DH71 laptop that did not come with one, which specific model did you install and were there any issues? Did you try any drives that did NOT work, and if so, which ones? If you ordered a version of this model laptop that did come with an M.2 SSD, what specific model drive was installed?

Please note this question does NOT refer to replacing the 2.5" HDD with a SSD of that formfactor - it is specific to the M.2 slot.

I recently purchased this laptop and immediately installed the following SSD:

Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB M.2 3.5-Inch SSD (MZ-N5E500BW)

I works perfectly. The biggest problem I encountered was getting the computer to recognize it as the boot drive. After lot of research, I found the answer. It will require you to change settings in the BIOS to reconfigure boot configuration.

Is the battery internal or removable?

Removable. Just in case you didn't know don't remove it while it's on even if it's connected to the charger, make sure it's shut down.

How is the state of this laptop, there was quite a few ppl complaining that they had defective laptops, I am currently in the process of returning the previous version of this laptop, the gl551 version(because of defective), and was wondering how hot does this get while browsing for 5 hours, and does this computer often shutdown from closing the lid? (i had that happen constantly on the the previous laptop) And is there ever an error trying to download microsoft visual studios updates?(also another error i had).

Yes I have had a few problems with it. When I close the screen and then sign back in it gives an error that says something like 008002xd error or to that affect and says 'restarting may solve issue'. The simplest fix i have found was running a registry fix on something like ccleaner and it seems to resolve it for the most part. I do get the visual issue as well. Nothing that was too bothersome to me though. Maybe it is a big issue, but I never really noticed much of a difference. Possible because I don't actually use the laptop to game as much as I thought I would. As far as the heat goes, I don't think it gets overly hot. The fan works well and often the side of the laptop where it is blowing gets hot (like on the table) but the laptop itself not too often. Sometimes it does randomly shut down (only once or twice). Again I run diagnostic test to see what is up. Often I blame most issues on Microsoft 10 because why not. I then trouble shoot from there. I watch movies on netflix for long periods and it seems to run fine. Ill look up and see if there is a large problem of sorts and see if I can return for a fix. But ultimately it does what I need it to do.

Can I replace the HHD to SSD?

You can either replace the HDD or add an SSD which is what I did.
There is an empty m.2 slot for an SSD in the compartment.  Pretty painless installation.
This thing flies with the SSD as the primary and the 1G HDD as bulk storage.

Is this the model with black lid and silver overlay or the pure silver lid?

I generally like the machine.  I read some of the reviews that said the lid/screen was flimsy.  I'm not a kid & haven't thrown the laptop of the desk, just opened and closed like it was meant to be used.  No problem there.

I was going to dual boot Linux but got busy and haven't worked around the Secure Boot system.  I hate Microsoft.  The system (Win 10) can't be secured or stopped from phoning home.  That's probably just me & a few million others but not the majority.

The video driver crashes & recovers immediately and has since new.  I think it may be related to Java but haven't found a solution.  The recovery is fast enough so that no work is interrupted.

I installed an 500 GB SSD and it boots fast.  The machine has 2 extra RAM slots & the MB will hold 64 GB RAM but you void the warranty getting to the extra slots.  I will if/when I need to.

Like always, buy this machine if you can't find a better deal.  Don't be tied to a manufacturer.  Is there a comparable MSI or other machine for less?  If so, grab it.  If not this will work fine.

How does one tell if the casing is metal or plastic?

The top is aluminum and the bottom is plastic. I like how mine is doesn't feel cheesy but it also doesn't feel over built

What is the average battery life?

I keep it plugged into the charger while I am using it because if I don't the battery doesn't seem to last long.  But from what my friends whom do a lot of "PC gaming" tell me, that is a common problem with gaming laptops

Does your laptop get very warm under the left palm rest?

I'm finding it very uncomfortable and am considering RMA'ing the machine because of it

The laptop does get warm on the left side. With the processor seeming to be there I am not at all surprised.  I typically use a cooler under that area of my laptops  however I have not bought one for this machine yet. I hope it works out for you.

My only beef with it is the Win 10. This is my first running it and the updates and forced software are continuously slowing the wireless down. My Win 7 let me choose when and where. Probably just have to learn how to set it. This i7 doesn't seem much better than my i5 but again I haven't figured out how to shut off the constant update and software reminders.
