4 out of 5 eggsGood laptop but not perfect

Pros: - Good value (was $900 during Black Friday w/ free ASUS tablet.
- Good Intel Core i7 processor.
- SIngle 8GB RAM stick which allows you to buy another 8GB stick in the future to increase the RAM instead of replacing both 4GB sticks.
- 1080p screen resolution.
- Good thickness and weight for the price.
- Good graphics performance for casual gamers.

Cons: - Although the screen is 1080p its a TN panel with a catastrophic viewing angles (bad even by TN standards).
- Display calibration is poor out of the box, but once calibrated it becomes reasonably accurate.
- The GPU is a GeForce GTX 850M which comes with a 2GB DDR3 VRAM, DDR3 memory for the graphics hurts performance a lot on 1080p resolution, The GeForce GTX 860M should have been used as its identical to the 850M with the exception of using GDDR5 memory instead.
- No backlit keyboard.

Other Thoughts: This is not really a Gigabyte product, its made by Clevo (A well known Chinese company that sells laptop barebones).
Model number is Clevo W650SJ.

1 out of 5 eggsReview Update 4/09/2015

Pros: Snappy
Ergonomic
Large amount of storage
good GPU
Runs cool
games run fine

Cons: RMA service sucked
RMA created more issues
Battery drains quickly
Motherboard went bad after only 50 days of purchase
Had to pay for shipping to company for RMA
Took 2 weeks to get full RMA completed
Had to request 4 RMA's

Other Thoughts: I would like to start off by saying that the Laptop itself is phenomenal. It is very snappy and can handle a lot of load. Gameplay is one of the best I have seen on a laptop. I play Battlefield 3 with Ultra settings, and easily get 50 fps. For a laptop, it is great. The laptop is very ergonomic, and fits comfortably on my lap. I mainly use this laptop for school. I bought the laptop because my degree specifically uses CPU/GPU sucking software and needed something that can handle it without a problem, also for gaming on my down time.

Now we’ll get into what is wrong with the company…

After approximately 50 days of owning the laptop, the charging unit on the motherboard did not work anymore, and I had to request an RMA. That was fine, requesting it went smooth. They made me pay for shipping the laptop from Ohio to California. That, I think was wrong because of the fact that the laptop was only 50 days old and it was obviously a manufacturing problem. I paid over $1,000 for the laptop, and they can’t pay for simple shipping to and from? Thats a bit ridiculous. I know when I bought a $300 graphics card from NVIDIA, they paid for super fast shipping both too them and from Ohio. The turnaround time of the RMA was about a week. They did replace the motherboard free of charge. When I received the laptop back, they packaged it wonderfully. It was in the original box I sent it in with a ton of packing. I greatly appreciated that part. But after a couple of days using the laptop after getting it back, I noticed the front of the laptop, on the left side, the casing comes apart, and is not staying together. This causes issues by the trackpad buttons will not work, so I have to fiddle around with it until it reconnects. Also there is a screw missing on the bottom of my laptop. This is on the bottom of the laptop, on the right side. Its not in the box, and its nowhere to be found, I can hear things rattling around inside the laptop if I move it about maybe the screw is inside? All of this is on my brand new Gigabyte laptop I am not a happy customer I will look for someone else to purchase my computer components and systems from in the future!. I would upload pictures of the laptop case not staying together, but NewEgg does not allow links in reviews.

UPDATE! 4/9//2015 After 4 RMA's i have finally given up. After sending the laptop back to get the case fixed I received it with the trackpad and keyboard unresponsive. I proceeded to send it back again received it working BUT inside the case something was loose, upon opening the case I found 4, yes FOUR, screws loose and rolling around in the case. WHO DOES THIS!! Gigabyte says "engineers" are fixing your laptop but they lie! What engineer would leave 4 screws loose. What company would send a customer with 4 RMA's something that would need to be sent back!

I am for certain I will NEVER buy another Gigabyte product.

Hope this review helps someone out,

Regards,
Very Unsatisfied Consumer

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Overall great laptop for the price; I got this during the week of Black Friday for about $800, and it came with a free 7'' tablet. Laptop runs smoothly, and the specs for the price can't be beaten. Also, it is designed well aesthetically, and feels great to handle. The chiclet keys feel fantastic to use, but I think that very much boils down to personal preference; some will love them and some will hate them. The short keystrokes are helpful for gaming though.

I would also note that it runs fairly quietly compared to other, similar laptops I have used, even while gaming. Certainly not silent, but quieter than the average. I personally have not had heating issues, even while gaming for multiple hours.

Cons: 1 primary reason for the 2 star rating; I will go through the minor cons first. The lack of backlit keyboard is a bit disappointing, and the computer sometimes has some issues with turning the screen back on if the screen is fully closed then quickly opened. Battery life is a bit poor.

Most importantly though, the computer I have will no longer charge the battery. This issue occurred about a month after receiving the computer. It recognizes that a battery is in, and states that it is charging, but will not charge past 0% and immediately turns off if disconnected. Troubleshooting from information I have found online has not fixed this.

Other Thoughts: I am going to attempt to have this issue resolved, and will update the review pending the customer service I receive. If everything goes smoothly, I would anticipate giving this up to 4 stars, but currently 2 stars is appropriate.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Value

Pros: Too numerous to list. It is a excellent laptop for the price that your pay.

Handles World of Tanks and Assassins Creed III like a champ.

Cons: You are practically forced by Intel and Microsoft to accept Windows 8 as your OS. I have installed numerous OS in the past, but never with Windows 8 preinstalled. The system would not let me install Win7 as a duel OS with Win 8.1 because the Recovery partition was on the same drive. Perhaps I am not that tech savvy. I eventually went with Start8 to give me the Windows 7 OS feel while dealing little as possible with the Win 8.1 OS.
During intense gaming, the surface does get hot, which is expected with most gaming laptops.

Other Thoughts: If you are not tech savvy and despise Windows 8, you can choose another laptop that has Win7 preinstalled, have someone who is tech Savvy install Win7 for you, or you can get Start8.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Value

Pros: Unassuming good looks, great bang for your buck, good size and weight, battery time (100%-20% 3 hours of browsing usage)

Cons: Keyboard is a bit spread out for a laptop (getting used to it), Windows 8.1 is not so friendly, sound is ok, control tools are lacking (mainly laptop power control).

Other Thoughts: First battery test I ran it from fully charged to 20% and it lasted three hours with normal browsing usage. It could probably do 3.5 hours until it automatically hibernates in last 5%.

3 out of 5 eggsGIGABYTE

Pros: It is very fast, seems to be work with out any heat problems.

Cons: The touchpad goes unresponsive. I have tried updating drivers with no luck. Sometimes it will work for few minutes and then will spaz out and becomes unusable. Could be the laptop is a lemon, but this is off my experience and will change once I return it and receive a new one.

5 out of 5 eggsAn excellent laptop, just what I needed

Pros: - Amazing processor
-Excellent graphics chip
-Very large and snappy hard drive (HGST brand 1TB, 32MB cache,7200RPM)
-Speedy memory (1600mhz)
- Nice keyboard (clicky chiclet style, personal preference)
-Cooling is better than expected, and stellar with a large cooling pad)
-Battery life is good for this sort of laptop (see other thoughts for more info)
-Durable, plastic finish
-lots of internal upgrade ability
-Windows 8.1 is snappy and responsive, better than Windows 8 that I used last
-Quite light for the amount of hardware in it
-VERY little bloatware, happily surprised
-Touchpad is simple and nice, with smooth scrolling
-Simplistic and elegant design (personal preference)

Cons: -Screen is matte and a TN type panel, thus giving a good picture but poor color accuracy for professionals
-Graphics card is placed right under where your palm rests during gaming, thus heating up your palm slightly
-Windows 8.1, while I find good, is much harder to get to certain tweaking options that I find easily accessibly in windows 8
-Battery life is fair, but could be better

Other Thoughts: I purchased this laptop because I have heard good things about gigabyte and this was the best for the dollar for what I wanted as of the time i'm writing this. The intel processor is snappy and responsive, while staying cool and quiet. The GTX 850m plays games well ( I can max out Warframe easily at 1080P with all ultra settings besides nvidia physx turned off). The screen, while not perfect or as nice as my HP 25llx on my desktop, is still great and I have no complains for my uses as gaming and web browsing is not affected by some slightly off colors. Battery life is fair, around 2.5 hours from full charge to 10% when web browsing and doing basic things (any video playback will yield lower battery life). This laptop is NOT made directly from gigabyte, but rather is based off of the Sager NP6658 and the Clevo W650SJ laptop models. I've heard good things about sager and clevo so I dont see this as an issue, plus this means that replacement parts are easier to find for me if needed in the future. The battery is also a model w650bat-6 and there is a a 62wh battery that will fit this if you can find it ( the one this laptop is a 48wh battery). Overall I really like the laptop and am happy with my purchase, and I hope this review helps those looking to purchase this fine laptop!
