4 out of 5 eggsGreat Alternative to other High End Powerhouse laptops

This review is from: GIGABYTE P34Wv5-SL2 Gaming Laptop 6th Generation Intel Core i7 6700HQ (2.60 GHz) 8 GB Memory 1 TB HDD 128 GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3 GB GDDR5 14.0" Windows 10 Home

Pros: - Comes with the latest 6th Gen CPU + high end graphics chip
- Warranty allows end user to swap out RAM, HDDs, WiFi Adapter. The Battery and the Power adapter both have 1 Year Warranty.
- Beautiful FHD screen
- Nice and light. Great construction IMHO
- For the size of the laptop, the battery seems pretty sufficient. Starting at 100%, I was able to clean install Windows 10 and some updates, deploy Hyper V, install 2012 R2 in a VM and do some wifi browsing. This total process took about 4 hrs and still had 20% battery left (Little bit above min Brightness)

Cons: - CPU and GPU gets really hot when gaming. Depending on the game you play, if you max out the graphics expect both CPU and GPU to reach 90+ celcius. This isn't optimal if this is to be used as a gaming machine but since I'm mostly using it to run VMs with gaming thrown in here and there it doesn't bother me much. It helps that the laptop has a 2yr warranty..
- Warranty DOES NOT allow user to remove cooling fans and re-paste the chips with better thermal compound
- Slight wobble when I just got it while resting flat on a table. EASILY RECTIFIED by unscrewing the bottom panel and clicking it back into place correctly.

Other Thoughts: I would definitely recommend this product to people wanting to get away from the regular big brand companies and would like to tailor a laptop specifically to themselves. If you value having extended warranty options, a machine with a luxurious design or even just a laptop that people will go "oooh and ahhhh" over then this is not for you.

- Gigabyte does not offer extended warranty, any repairs go through a local repair depot

- Laptop may not be beautiful like an XPS 9550 or a MacBook but I love the minimalist design that still seems very robust.

People have complained about the trackpad but the only 'issue' I can see is the buttons need to be pressed closer to the edge of the trackpad for the click to really register well.

- If you click too close to the center, you will be met with significant resistance. Again, this does not bother me as I went into the ELAN software, adjusted touch sensitivity etc and just use the touch feature to do my left clicking. The ELAN config will be your best friend as you can adjust the two-finger scroll directly, zoom sens etc etc.
- If you would compare the P34Wv5's trackpad to the one found on the XPS 9550, the 9550 wins out no problem; it definitely is superior. Realistically though, the P34Wv5's trackpad is still good and won't cause you alot of stress when not using an external mouse

One major complaint I've seen from people online is that the screen isn't bright enough. You NEED to have the Gigabyte smart manager software installed as this directly affects the screen brightness. When I reinstalled windows, I noticed even though the brightness was @ 100% it was still very dim. Installing the SmartManager software immediately rectified this. Other than that software, no other "bloatware" was needed.

For now I can say that this is a great machine and I'm quite happy with the purchase. If I have anything to add I will at a later date.

2 out of 5 eggsP34Wv5-SL2 1920x1080 - Solid Build, Cheap Panel

This review is from: GIGABYTE P34Wv5-SL2 Gaming Laptop 6th Generation Intel Core i7 6700HQ (2.60 GHz) 8 GB Memory 1 TB HDD 128 GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3 GB GDDR5 14.0" Windows 10 Home

Pros: - P34 body is more solid than the P35
- Separate left/right click button from the rest of the track pad is actually quite nice
- Slim form factor
- Didn't have the spacebar issue

Cons: - TN panel on the 1920x1080 is subpar
- Backlight is practically non-existent even when plugged in
- Keyboard rises slightly in the middle
- Newegg's restocking fee is outrageous

Other Thoughts: I spent a lot of time going back and forth between the MSI GS60 Ghost, the Asus GL552VW and the P34Wv5/P35Xv5. If it wasn't for the cheap panel I would've been very happy with the P34Wv5. The viewing angles on the 1920x1080 version of the P34Wv5 are bad. We're talking T-420 Lenovo bad.

On the positive side, I really liked the separate mouse button. The track pad on the P35Xv3 doesn’t always register taps so having a button that always worked was nice. I also didn’t have the issue with the bottom of the spacebar not registering when you tap it like other people are reporting.

Overall, the P34Wv5 just feels like a higher quality build compared to the P35Xv3, but the panel was so appalling it went right back in the box. The QHD version uses an IPS panel, but 2560x1440 on a 14in has drawbacks that aren’t appealing to me. I have the P35Xv5-SL3 on order—hopefully the track pad on the v5 doesn’t suck as much as it does on the v3.
