5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: •10key
•decent video card
•msata port
•looks professional
•overall performance is very good.

Cons: •Had some difficulty getting the dedicated card to activate. For some reason, the system insisted on using the integrated intel graphcis, a driver-reinstall solved the issue
•pre-installed software (as usual with windows laptops)
•no docking functionality (you will need to plugin alot of cables if you have external monitors/printers/etc at your office.
•glossy screen

Other Thoughts: Im a casual gamer, and when it came time to get a new laptop for work, i was budgeted $1000. With the release of windows 8, finding a win7 based laptop was getting difficult, and I was left with 3 choices (msi, asus, lenovo). While I am a big fan of both msi and asus products, their similar products were geared more towards the gaming crowd. The laptops were bulkier, and had more angles to give them that cool and futuristic look. The lenovo however had a much more modest design, and flew right under the radar of my boss. He would never know that this laptop is the strongest computer in the office (including our server). Thus far, i have had no major issues with the laptop, and it hasnt missed a beat with whatever i have thrown at it.

On a side-note, I have installed a 256gb SSD on the mSata port. That made a huge difference in the systems performance.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst Computer I've Ever Owned

Pros: Absolutely none.

Cons: Computer operates at ludicrously high temperatures, has an atrocious battery life, I get crash dumps twice a day, my trackpad spazzes out, my wireless network adapter fails, and Lenovo's customer service is an abomination.

Also, Newegg's return policy is garbage, too. There's no reason to buy from them - there's very little money saved and you get no recourse if they sell you a non-functional piece of garbage, which they did.

The last time I will EVER order from Newegg, or buy a Lenovo. Consider me back to the Apple Store for. f*cking. ever.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth The Money

Pros: Great laptop. Lenovo included all the drivers on a separate partition, making it easy to copy them to a flash drive and do a fresh install. Installed Guild Wars 2 and Starcraft 2 (after updating with the latest NVIDIA drivers); both run at medium-high settings at ~60FPS, and at ultra at ~30FPS.

Screen looks awesome. The DPI is high enough that I can't see individual pixels from a normal viewing distance. Colors are vivid, and the contrast is great. The metal lid and keyboard bezel are a nice touch, gives the laptop a really solid feel. The whole thing feels solid really, no creaking or groaning when it moves around. Plus, you just can't get these specs in any other laptop in a package this sleek at this price.

Heat generation isn't nearly as bad as I expected. While it does certainly get warm, and I would not want to play games with this on my lap, it isn't going to melt a table or anything like some of the gaming laptops I've used. Its also pretty quiet, even at full load.

Cons: The laptop is big. Like, almost big enough to be a 17". Probably because of that, the screen has a huge bezel around it that I think takes away from the look a little bit. You stop noticing it after a while though.

Hard drive is slow. That's the only thing really holding this system back. Put a decent hard drive (or better yet, an SSD) in here and this thing would fly.

Other Thoughts: Overall, totally worth every penny. You cant get a gaming laptop this sleek, with these specs, at this price anywhere else. The Blu-Ray drive and 1080p screen really make this thing shine. Minor issues aside, buy it. You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 eggsSmart decision

Pros: From my perspective, this is the best value out there if you want to clear a certain threshold of performance. I wanted a mid-range graphics chipset and this has it. This is one of the least expensive ways to get to a GTX 650m/660m solution without (1) paying more than $1500 or (2) packing around a wedge of plastic. Needless to say, the hardware delivers. See other thoughts for more on that.

Much more visually attractive in person than in the photos.

Size is great. It is the same size as some budget 15" laptop while packing exceptional hardware.

The display is fantastic. Coupled with the video card, you have everything you need in a 15" form factor. Also, the speakers are very good for a laptop. BR re-writer.

Installed an SSD (Mushkin mSATA 240GB SSD). This is a must! Just budget the money for it. Get the 120GB if you like, but definitely purchase one. Here's why: boot with installed HDD: 1min 10sec; boot with SSD (doesn't displace the HDD): 10 seconds flat

Cons: You'll want to turn off the touchpad when gaming. Right shift key is a little small. Other than that it feels great.

Lenovo's keyboard software may knock you out of certain games/fullscreen apps if you accidentally toggle NumLock or something.

Touchpad drivers are necessary for it to work well, don't go blasting everything when you start cleaning it up for the first time.

Battery life won't last you an overseas flight, but you should know that.

I'm a little hard pressed to find flaws, all things considered. If you are looking at this, its for the hardware specs and this delivers for an excellent price.

Screen is glossy, be prepared.

Other Thoughts: Didn't ship with a whole lot of bloatware, thankfully. Not too loud and not too hot, even when gaming.

If you are willing to budget the money for an mSATA SSD to supplement the HDD (you don't have to replace it), then you can turn this $1100 laptop into a >$1500.

I intend for this to last me at least 3 years, so I opted for the extended warranty.

Unigine Heaven 3.0 with these settings: dX11, 2xAA, 4xAF, trilinear, high textures, medium shaders, medium tessellation...
1080p: 25fps
720p: 43fps
I'm sure if you like to tinker with video card settings you can get more out of it.

This is a great solution if you want to consolidate a lot of desktop hardware and have mobility. This is a superb solution for any power user. I am very pleased with my purchase!

Shipped fast from Memphis to KY.

4 out of 5 eggsFor Linux

Pros: A high performance laptop with nearly 100% compatibility with Linux. Hyper-threading i7 makes software compiling nice and quick and the GTX video card from Nvidia has excellent Cuda support within Linux.

Cons: 5,400 RPM junk Seagate hard drive - but that's not a big deal because the price if right and who would actually keep that drive in there? I already had a Mushkin SSD waiting when the laptop arrived.

Other Thoughts: Like I said, I purchase this for Linux only. I didn't clone any drives, etc. I just replaced the drive and installed Debian - no problems. There are several things I wish I knew in advance... First off, the "click pad" is experimental with xorg - you'll have to do a lot of tweaking to get it working... the ethernet driver is not in the current linux kernel - you'll need to compile the out of tree code for the Atheros (yes, this is a gigabit ethernet adapter from a wireless company) but ethtool shows it has rxvlan, tcp, etc. offload engines, blah blah... and finally, be prepared to make the integrated Intel 4000 HD GPU and the Nvidia GTX play nice together... I had to use Bumblebee and bbswitch... but it does work.

2 out of 5 eggslenovo y580

Pros: When I looked at the features of this laptop I had high expectations for performance. I even noticed 1 review commenting that this laptop would run a few high end video games on ultra settings. The bad news is I bought two. Newegg was out of stock of Asus laptop I normally buy. Great components. But that is it.

Cons: Both laptops with all the great components died in two weeks. They fastest boot time was 63 seconds. Runs video games on lowest settings. Bottom line is all hype no bite. These were a waste money.

Other Thoughts: I think the real issue with these laptops are the hard drives. I have old hp computers that boot faster. Hope the replacements deliver
